Good points Chris.

Like I said before...this contest will be a huge toss up. I can easily see CG, Mt. Zion, Fairfield, or DeKalb taking GC.

But I honestly don't see Mt. Zion coming to any competition without the intent to win. While "getting their feet wet" for Ona could very well be part of their decision for competing early this year, I don't think that they would compete simply for that reason alone. I just have a gut feeling that Mt. Zion is goingvto be extremely tough (not necessarily unbeatable though) even with the loss of so many seniors. I don't think they would randomly start competing early if they thought they were going to get 3rd or 4th. My opinion: Mt. Zion will be in the top 2.

However, I do think all the groups have something different in their favor:

Center Grove will be vocally strong and probably have a more traditional classic show.

Fairfield is extremely well-rounded. They have a great choral sound and clean dancing.

Dekalb OWNS the Southmont invite, they've already competed once, and choreographically they'll probably be the cleanest.

And I think MTZ has great momentum coming off last season. And with the loss of so many seniors they probably feel that they have something to prove.

And I don't think anyone should rule out a surprise Finalist spot for either Mooresville or Anderson. Mooresville was right in the hunt last year with CG and DeKalb, and Anderson just had a very good season.

Alot of it will probably have to do with the judging panel. A more vocally inclined panel will probably give CG and Fairfield and edge. And vice versa for Mt. Zion and DeKalb.

Bottom line: This is the best line-up Southmont has had in a while. Its going to be an exciting day. Good luck to all groups!

I think you folks are forgetting this competition is in NOVEMBER! LOL!

What I mean is, this comp as well as any early comp, will be won by the most prepared group. Especially when there so many groups who are at the top of their game once the season gets in full swing, the winner will be the group who is most ready.

I think it's impressive that all of these groups are going out so early in the year- it's a brave thing to do, even with Fall shows instead of comp shows.

I think you folks are underestimating Fairfield... they have always been known for excellent vocals and energetic shows, and from what I've heard, they are at the top of their game. They had a great season last year, winning multiple GCs as well as awards for Best Vocals and Best Choreography. I'm personally expecting them in the top two spots.

I've also heard that Mt. Z is not using any of their spring show at Southmont. Scott, since they did lose so many seniors last year, I'm guessing they want to get the group onstage once before Onalaska, which has always been a contest that Mt. Zion is after to win. With this being Paul Gulsvig's last year at Ona, I have a feeling that the Mt. Z folks want to make sure things are on the right path for that contest, which is why I surmise that they're competing at Southmont.

I could be totally wrong... Mt. Zion has always competed extensively, so maybe they just want to get started sooner! Just my guess.

As for the results, I think Best Vocals will go to either Center Grove or Fairfield; Best Choreo will likely be DeKalb in my opinion. DeKalb is used to competing at these fall contests, and they'll probably be performing part of their spring show at Southmont. One thing is for sure... it will be very interesting to sit back and watch!

DeKalb didn't compete at Southmont in 2000. Mooresville did win that year though, but they beat Crete-Monee out, not DeKalb.

I'm almost positive DeKalb competed at Southmont in 2001 though. I'm not sure of their placement though.

Dekalb didn't win Southmont back in 2000 or 2001...I believe it was Mooresville who beat them...
