Maybe I should clarify what I meant by that. Wheaton's show last year (and if I remember correctly, this year as well) did not have a backdrop or other various technological enhancements but was still a very competitive show.
Unless something has changed, Bradley Central isn't even attending SCN, so I'm not sure how productive that post was. And don't even get us started about the Belmont competition your referring to. Suffice it to say a major scoring error and a panel of folks who lack experience judging show choir does a decent amount to damage credibility.
Yeah, I was just trying to show how well the transitive property works with show choir... which is not at all.

At this point, we have at least this much for predicting:
1. Petal beat Homewood.
2. Glenwood beat Sullivan.
3. Center Grove beat Sullivan.
4. Buffalo Grove has an extended victory over Mt. Zion.
5. Glenwood has an extended victory over Homewood, Petal, Buffalo Grove, and Mt. Zion.
6. Homewood beat Clover Hill.
Still to come:
1. Homewood vs. Wheaton at Petal (2/28). If Homewood wins, they have an extended victory over Buffalo Grove, Sullivan, Mt. Zion, and Petal.
2. Mt. Zion vs. Sullivan at Glenwood (2/28).
3. Mt. Zion vs. Glenwood at Decatur (2/21).
I think it would be great fun to predict Nationals using "extended victories."
1. Bradley Central beats Wheaton North, giving Bradley Central an extended victory over Glenwood, Decatur, Sullivan, and MTZ. From Glenwood's victories, Bradley Central gains an extended victory over WWS.
2. Homewood defeats Bradley Central, giving them an extended victory over the previously mentioned groups.
3. Decatur defeats Homewood, giving them extended victories over the previously mentioned groups (including themselves).
4. Sullivan defeats Decatur, giving them a ton of extended victories.
So... I think you get the point.
Sets in the South are pretty much standard. Very Clinton-esque (aka panels). Nearly every Middle Mixed group has the basic panels backdrops. YES the blinding lights. Opelika definitely has them this year and South Jones has in the past. West jones usually has lights of some sort. And Clinton and Auburn both have digital screens right now (and Clinton has for several years now). And Albertville is full-broadway type too, and they're from the south.
And I'm pretty sure every group from every region tries to perfect the vocals and choreography...
So I also disagree with that comment. But I feel like all of this is a little off-topic at the moment.
On this topic--an early prediction: Petal makes finals.

The BEST thing about national competitions like SCN is you get to come and watch all of these very high-quality groups from all over the nation. You get to experience so many styles you don't get to see in your individual state/region!!!
From what I have observed, the groups from the North seem to employ more technology, creating an almost Broadway approach to their shows. Groups from the South tend to be a bit more traditional and stick more to trying to perfect the singing and dancing aspects of the show.
I also disagree. I saw Madison Central last year and they had blinding lights in their show. Also Clinton is renowned for their sets, and many other Southern groups have backdrops.
Also, "the North" is a little over-generalized in show choir. States like Iowa are pretty basic when it comes to sets/backdrops where Indiana and many Chicago area schools have sets. Each state is known for looking for certain characteristics in show choirs.

I also politely disagree. I think a perfect example of this is Hastings. One of the best groups if not the best group that has zero technological enhancements. I would say their dancing isn't necessarily traditional, but it's killer nonetheless.

Should be an excellent contrast of styles. It will depend on what the judges are looking for.
Agree.

Disagree. I believe that in the past few years choirs all over have just been trying different things. I wouldn't say there's a style when it comes to 'midwest' or 'southern' etc.

Overall effect seems to be where there exists the most disparity between groups from the North and the South. Seems like points may be lost in one area but gained in another. I have noticed that some judges are turned off by gimmickry and special effects, while other love it. You can never tell from competition to competition. I would think it would be very difficult to predict the outcome of this competition.
Oh, thank you for reminding me about the difficulties of the task I have waiting ahead of me. But irregardless of what-ever you may choose to think about it, I will have a Final Show Choir Ranking for 2015. THANK YOU!!
