I'm sorry I missed DB, it sounds like everyone had a great performance. Is it true that every group gets a trophy at DB? If it is I think that is great. I know not everyone agrees with that but I've had groups that got last place but I was still proud of them for getting on stage and putting on the best show they knew how and giving 100%. Thanks DB for recognizing that.

Which Rent song did BV do?

FYI...

The directors of both FAME and SHOWSTOPPERS were there in attendance!

You also had VIP Show Choir directors from:

New York
Maryland
Indiana
Georgia
and Nebraska!
All there to see their first Southern California Competition!

Thanks for Diamond Bar for hosting a very positive and friendly festival!
Thanks for NOT having a "potty pass"

I hope from here on out that everyone will just enjoy each other's shows as we all are still trying to fix, change, tweak or reformat our shows for all of you.

A month from now you won't remember who got what for which festival... BUT you will remember their show....

If in place for their scheduled call-times - warm-up, performance, whatever - and not a disturbance to any other group or the ongoing competition, how a group chooses to use the time prior to competing should be entirely up to them.  Watch the competition, dont watch it; think through the show, think of anything but; meditate quietly or fill-in-the-blank here - they should do whatever will have them most ready to perform at their absolute best.  Only then can they be fairly and accurately judged.

please. ;)

can we STOP talking about what happened with in sync missing groups..

we have heard BOTH sides arguments... and is no longer necessary.

so from this post on... i have a request:

-no more talking about bad placements
-no more talking about choirs missing other choirs performances
-no more talk of rumors
-take this whole situation and use it as a reminder of what NOT to do
-make this season the most intense and most AWESOME year EVERRRR

i love you all..

That is all anyone needed to say to set the record straight...no 2 page complaint about how unbelievable the reactions of groups (directors) were.

Also I don't think going overboard on the defensive really sets a good perspective to the bystander. A respectable person takes the rumors and laughs at them. Let them believe what they want, you know the truth.

thats why i said no matter what u guys think..meaning we know what happend and none of u guys know for sure...and i did laugh at it..when the director from DB anounced that comment at the awards cerimony..i clapped and laughed..i think its funny how much people look for excuses....and honestly i dont care what u think of me..cause nobody in any SC except mine knows me..so u can judge me all u want..im not my whole choir...so dont judge them on my comment...

pinch.gif MAN, that totally sucked!!! I think if we all got EXTRA rehearsal time we all could have done better! Alot of us were really shocked and dissapointed that it happened. Missing one choir, i would feel bad, but missing 4 or 5...lol, crazy! Oh well, I guess what's done is done? " border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

...umm can i just say..being from in'sync..the one who was apperantly out for 4 or 5 choirs..we were not rehersing..no matter what u guys think...our day started off with us leaving late and no time to get ready...then right when we got there..we had to go eat and then watch our other choir perform..then we went straight to our room and started to get ready...our director said we have 1 1/2 hours until our division starts..so the girls and guys went to there separate rooms...we started getting ready and about 1/2 hour into us puting on our faces and what not...dimondbar people came in saying the we were disqualified if we didnt come right then..we were not even close to being ready...one of our leaders said that..that was nowhere in the rool book that we had to watch the other divisions that we were not even compeating aginst..so we rushed everything and got ready 5 min. after they left the room...we got down to the auditorium and they made us stay ouside for 2 groups....then when we got in we still saw 3 of the groups who were in divison B and saw all of our division..so i dont see what the big deal is..maybe someone can fill me in..please....

I keep seeing a lot of the "I really don't agree with the placements"...That's all fine and dandy but do realize that you can have a Division of show choirs that are all amazing groups and each deserves first place because they sounded better than last week and last year...but in the end someone has to be better than the other.
It may make more sense if you looked at the scores of the groups and maybe did a grade scale for them. Just as an example!!:

Powerhouse - Music 59/60 - Show 37/40
Sound Vibrations - Music 54/60 - Show 37/40
Chantuers - Music 58/60 - Show 37/40
In Sync - Music 58/60 - Show 39/40

And if you took the percentages of their scores, they all recieved "Letter Grade" A but it was up to the judges to decide who performed the best.
SO STOP BITCHIN'

I kinda wish that someone would've told us (Music Machine) the truth and said "hey, put your heads back down you weren't as good as you think" just so we could've expected the worst(: But regardless I had fun!

-I enjoyed Arcadia's show; asians have naturally good facials that make me happy inside
-I am on a mission to learn how to breakdance
-Burroughs gets my award for hottest girls
-Hart gets my award for hottest guys
-And my award for best diction
-Show choir has to be the cool thing to do at Diamond Bar

But in fact, isn't that what you are doing right now - stirring up rumors about alleged other directors who you claim to revel in other groups' demise?
Perhaps a director may have noted the problem to Mr. Willert - but as you said - the rules clearly state that there is no penalty. So the director must have had the GOOD intention of bringing the problem to light so that there may not be another time. It is unfortunate that traffic problems hindered your preparation time and even more unfortunate that your choir had to have been made an example of.

Perhaps you should not be so haste to make an allegation next time.

Mr. Carroll isn't stirring up anything, what he said about SOME of the directors is factual, maybe not all, but some are that way. . .

Show Choir was founded because a love to perform, with all the politics involved now-a-days, a lot of people forgot that fact. Mr. Willert and Mr. Carroll are trying to remind everyone of just that. . . We need to go back to the non-political, love of performing (not winning) state-of-mind!

. . .We shall have to wait until Brea/TOC for the next chance to perform and appreciate all other who performed; during this, we should remember that we do it for the performance, not the trophies. . .

come on guys!! we are all friends here... as far as i know. big deal if they missed as few choirs!!! i saw them a few nights before when they had a show with hart and belmont. trust me, they were very good then and i don't think it would have mattered even if they were getting "extra practice time". Lets all just accept the fact that they are a great show choir and put on a great show! The modest proposal was entertaining, but un-needed. The fact of it all is that we do this for fun! every person who puts time and effort into things to come up with a show does it because they enjoy the outcome. It is fun to be on stage with your friends and perform infront of your peers, and it is just as much fun to watch them, if you have the opportunity. People wouldn't be mad if a few kids from one choir were out of the room for half the show, so y be mad at one choir??

Ok...

Good job to all groups who performed?!?

Isn't that the main point of the "results" forum??? To talk about results? not rules?!

First off, Mr. Carroll ROCKS!! Second, I LOVED BV!!! Should've placed higher. Third, Dan, I love your ideas! " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> Fourth, there really are problems with everything with show choir, but that is only because of our human folly. It can never be fixed. Unless we all of a sudden think the same things and judge the same way and do EVERYTHING the same way. Fifth, I liked Glendora. Sixth, Out of the Blue did a really good job! Seventh, I think that people shouldn't say something that they don't know for a fact is true... it will ruin the idea of show choir!!

And contrary to popular myth, we were not gone having some "super-rehearsal" that gave us the magic ability to win the competition.  I am constantly amazed at some directors and choirs on this circuit who are so bent on winning that they look for any way they can to try and prove that somebody else has an "advantage" that is "illegal".  I would suggest that those people look more at their own performance and their preparation in the days before if they are looking to do better.  I know that I was not completely happy with our performance last night, but that doesn't mean that I am going to look somewhere else to place blame on our not placing higher vocally.

For those people who were miffed last night, I apologize. Sincerely.  Though,  there WAS a Burbank group in the auditorium seated the ENTIRE evening since we had two groups there.  And for those groups "In Sync" missed watching last night while they were getting dressed, I know you were great and we WILL get to see you MANY times this season.  I think the only real complainers were those people (directors) thinking we were gaining a "leg up" on them, which is quite silly.  You know what?  I will never be a director who tries to stir up trouble on rumors or try to get someone disqualified EVEN if they are not following the rules.

QUOTE(lalalaicanthearyou @ Feb 5 2005, 07:00 PM)
Thanks for your comments, Mr. Carroll.  It's true that people can sometimes take rumors, not knowing how much is true, and see something unfair in them.  Honestly, the few people I heard talking were emphasizing more the point that they wanted In Sync in the house to support the other groups rather than any complaints about some unfair advantage.  Even on this point, we should remember that In Sync has always BEEN in the house for other competitions.

HOWEVER, I believe this mini-issue shines the proverbial follow spot on a much bigger problem, and that is the inequality, unpredictability, human fallibility and appalling lack of perfection that seem to plague this creature we call competitive show choir.  To address these disgraces, I suggest the following policy changes:

1.  Henceforward, all choirs are required to have students excused from the WHOLE day of school on competition days.  This will ensure that students from distant schools don't have an unfair advantage from missing more classes and thus having less geometry and literature cluttering their brains prior to a competition.

2.  All busses will be required to arrive 3 hours before the competition begins.  Breakdowns will be disqualified.  Every school in the near vicinity of a competition will be required to drive around town in their bus until they've driven as far as the most distant school.

3.  There will be one sound check, for everyone, all at the same time, so nobody gets the advantage of going earlier or later.  This might seem noisy, but it's noisy for everyone, and after all, it IS a SOUND check.

4.  The excuse, "but they're teenagers!  They might look brilliant on stage, but they're occasionally going to lose their pants (*cough JD*), or forget to put their earrings in their bag, or have an emotional cell-phone conversation with their friend (at least they THOUGHT it was their friend) who's now dating their ex-, or maybe fall asleep somewhere because they get an average of 5 hours of sleep per night" will no longer be allowed.  Backtalkers will be disqualified and their parents flogged.

5.  All performers must eat the same food before competition...let's say, McDonald's.  Oh, wait.....they already do that.

6.  The judges will be 1) the first person we find on campus at the nearest college or university; 2) the first homeless person we find under the nearest freeway overpass; 3) the first person we find working in the weight room at the nearest gym; and 4) Mr. Willert's son.  Okay, that last one makes no sense, but it sounded funny to me.

Some other ideas I've been working on:

- Maybe we could institute some sort of a sports-style draft system.

- Maybe we should all do the same set, say Brea's set.

- If there are twelve choirs in a competition, there should be twelve divisions, with twelve 1st place trophies...and they shouldn't be letter-named, but color-named, or maybe animal-named ("We won FIRST in tortoise division, Dad!")

- John had a good idea:  Since the two of us couldn't figure out a way to have nobody go first or last, he thought of a handicapping system, a la Vonnegut.  The first group would perform normally, then every succeeding group would have to carry weights and wear ear coverings; more weights and thicker ear coverings the later you perform.

Oh, yeah:  7.  No opinions are allowed, since this encourages value judgment.  For example, I'm not allowed to say that IMHO BV should have won their division last night, even if I stress that I'm not saying anything AGAINST, Brea, Chula or Los Al, whom I love.  The fact that I said it gets me banned from show choir for life and exiled from California.

That should help, what?

Other ideas are welcome.... as I said, it's going to take a lot to remedy all the disparity so we can start having fun....

Thanks for your consideration.

Dan

1) I love it!! WE should start that rule RIGHT NOW!!!
2) That basically mean BV/Eastlake/CV. . . *except for SoCal*
3) This would be funny to see!
4) One parent or both?
5) Does it have to be McDonald's?
6) 5th judge- Sound check guy
7) Not just exiled from California, exiled to a state w/o a Show Choir system

-Divisions should be named by Broadway songs (or musicals) from shows that opened no less than 8-10 years ago.
