Carmel was not recognized for vocals (winning a caption award for best vocals) until State. At all their other competitions they won best visuals. The "white and gold costumes" were part of the Rio theme and fit the song. They definately won best visuals because their costumes were amazing, fit the song, and their choreography was strong enough that the costumes didn't consume them. If you think their costumes were too much, what about those certain choirs (not naming names) that have elaborate sets with light-up risers or plexi-glass boxes with a lift inside. Its all relative. Instead of having an elaborate set, Carmel spent their money on elaborate costumes instead.
Wellll.....that's all in opinion which is cool..but for me, I am all about the vocals first..and they didn't impress me with their vocals until the ballad which even then I was more impressed by the stage presence...And I didn't care for their outfits either for their closer..I thought IN MY opinion, there was too much gold and white..but thats just what I think.. I don't care either way if it was the set or costumes.. I didn't care for those specific costumes... The other costumes they wore, I liked but those I didn't. So don't criticize me for my opinion please cause I didn't hate their whole show..thanks.
Carmel is def. no longer a sleeping giant! They had an AWESOME return to the show choir circuit, showing that their style STILL works. I applaud them and their director!. One thing I can say is that b/c the Ambassadors are back we may very well see stronger shows from other groups next season, which I'm looking forward to. Personal opinion aside, I want to congratulate the Ambassadors on coming back so strongly and wish them success on their future shows, endeavors, and of course next season!
I have seen Evening with the Ambassadors many times before this year. The one change they made this year is that the Accents are going to be part of the show as well. What alot of people don't realize, is that along with doing the whole competition thing, the Ambassadors also do at least 2 other shows for the public that run 2-5 performances each. So not only do they do extremely well at competition, they still manage to entertain enough people to pack out an auditorium numerous times a season (school year). Evening is a great show and it amazes me that they have the time and the ability to do an entire show along with competiting. They have been doing this ever since they first started competing so obviously they do something right. haha. It's unfortunate that people can't respect the Ambassadors simply because the past groups have done well, but if that is how it has to be, then oh well. All of the groups have earned respect by what they have done currently, not just what they have done in the past. CP is amazing. WC is amazing. HN is amazing. There are many hard working great groups out there that deserve respect.
I think one should invest in going to see Carmel's show titled "Evening with the Ambassadors." This show has been rumored to be what Carmel is about. I think a lot of people would finally realize how the Ambassadors and Accents succeed. I believe the show is on March 23 and 24 at 7:30 at Carmel HS. I hear that the Ambassadors and Accents do more than just competition sets at these shows...kinda like CP's end of the year show.
I think people dont want to give Carmel credit, becuase they ARE CARMEL. Lets be realistic not that many people like Carmel because of the history and the awards they have one and received fair and square. Carmel's athletic program is ranked in the top 10 nation wide, their Marching Band does very well at BOA nationals (2005 national champ) and the Accents have always done well when competing in the past. In addition, the long history of the Ambassadors competing in Bishop Luers in the 1980s and beating many favorite choirs has made Carmel a target for jealously rather than compliments. I think because of the styles of today, such as the Contemporary themes that come from many show choirs nowadays, Carmel seems to be a sleeping giant, however, doing very well on scoresheets because of their traditional views of show choir, and after all ...as said by others, the Carmel Ambassadors "created show choir".

I wan't impressed with Carmel really at all.. There vocals really didn't impress me much until it came time for their ballad, and I didn't really care for the all white and gold costumes for the closer. Too much in my opinion..but just my opinion.

I was wondering why some groups like Center Grove, Huntington North, Anderson Highland, and Zionsville don't compete in the State Competition? I'm pretty sure each uses the required 4x4 riser setup. I think this competition could be a better representative of Indiana Show Choir if more groups attempted to qualify.
Some of it has to do with the ISSMA scoresheet as well! It seems to me that the groups you mentioned don't really like the scoresheet or feel that it doesn't play to their strengths. Compared to scoresheets from other contests, the ISSMA scoresheet isn't very detailed. It's somewhat cut and dry with vocals, choreo, and band. It also doesn't leave much room for general effect and categories like that so I can understand the gripes. I REALLY understood it when the scoresheet was an even 50/50 but now that it's 60/40 I can't really come up with an excuse for those groups LOL. Another facet to look at is that some schools and their directors think that ISSMA only created the State Show Choir contest after much pressure from parents, students, and ultimately educators. So they think ISSMA really isn't as invested in it as much as say ISSMA Marching Band State, Orchestra or even just Concert Choir. The State Show Choir contest truly is still a work in progress! I guess it's all in preference for the individual schools!

Carmel may suceed North Central in vocals, but WC doesn't. WC is very good, don't get me wrong, but they just don't seem to have the vocal power that NC and Carmel both have. Personally, I think people should give North Central some more credit, because all Carmel and WC do for choreography is what I would consider as armography.
I think I am going to disagree...I think if anything WC does have the vocals..it's not all about vocal power..look at anderson, they have a small group and their vocals kick ass...and as far as their choreograpy (WC)..I think it goes just fine with the show..just like NC..some may argue that all NC does is booty poppin and hip shakin but it goes good with the theme... And as far as credit..I think NC gets credit where credit is due...People love them.. I wan't impressed with Carmel really at all.. There vocals really didn't impress me much until it came time for their ballad, and I didn't really care for the all white and gold costumes for the closer. Too much in my opinion..but just my opinion.
well, every year choirs have the oppertunity to compete in a national competition and most of those are around the same time as ISSMA, so choirs just have to choose "do we want to be known nationally or do we want to be known statewide?" i personally dont care though i just love competeing all together!

well that is quite unnecessary at all and something I believe is not true. I feel like anyone can do any style they are given. I have done tap, street tap, jazz, hiphop, disco, and swing all in my choir alone. But I also love to do ballroom and salsa. It is the director's job to put the show together, and so their personal style comes in here. It is not the students that cannot perform other types of shows, it is all based on what the director wants. I believe based on the direction of the choir, they can perform any style they want to.
Wow, I never even meant for that statement to be confrontational, offensive or anything! Let me rephrase; Of the shows that Carmel beat at ISSMA state, they probably wouldn't attempt any of those types of shows and vice versa!

I would venture to say that Carmel probably couldn't perform most of the shows they beat who were in the top six but also most of those groups would have a hard time performing a Carmel style show. It's all give and take and personal preference!

I think all of this arguing is legite. I mean lets look at how the scores turned out. I for one know that brownsburg spotlight was placed as LAST by one of the judges, and then on eof the judges placed them as THIRD.
To have that much distance and speculation between the groups will obivously bring out the arguing. what it boils down to is... the judges have the judge and not let their personal taste in the way. The shows were so vastly different this year that some judges simpley said 'i don't like it' without anything. I think that is what happened in some cases. ISSMA was very wierd this year. And personally, i think they need to get their act togther or no one will want to compete their anymore.

I MUST disagree with this. Carmel should not even be placed in the same category as WC as far as choregraphy. I know a few of the girls in Ambassadors and they are under the teachings of the Broadway famous Ron Morgan. So I strongly doubt that they do "armography". I have seen their shows and the girls that are featured dance wise are far more advanced than the majority of NC's choir. And the rest of the group is still extremely strong dance wise. WC is amazing in vocals, so is NC. NC is strong in dance, don't get me wrong. But the Ambassadors strive on classic show choir. What you call "armography". The way show choir started out as and brought past Ambassador groups luck in the past. NC is entertaining, no doubt there. They are an EXTREMELY talented group of people and work just as hard as everyone else. But obviously most judges have favored Carmel's classic show choir over the new "hip hop" style many choirs are attempting to do today (and NC has succeeded in doing). Just my opinion though...
I wouldn't say NC is "hip-hop." Let's remember that their first two numbers are from a Broadway show. I would def. say they are far more contemporary than most groups out there. It's all in style and execution. I would venture to say that Carmel probably couldn't perform most of the shows they beat who were in the top six but also most of those groups would have a hard time performing a Carmel style show. It's all give and take and personal preference!
