i didn't get to really talk to that many people in my group just a few but i was wondering, does anyone know the name of the "supergeek" soloist?

It says the soloist is Dan Davis

And now onto my thoughts about this wonderful competition.

Sound FX- I'm one of your hosts, and I must say that I was very impressed. With only 17 people in your choir, I honestly wasn't expecting a whole lot. You guys were, as Kevin said, "Very strong" Good Job

IC West- I saw you guys at Mt. Pleasent, and you guys are at least 10 times better than before. The only problem I have with your show is that I feel you guys have the same problem as CSI's show last year. It's a teeny bit too "old fashioned". I thought you guys deserved to be in finals, and you did a tremendous job.

Sauk Prarie- I didn't really know what to expect of your show, so I just kept myself open-minded. At the end I knew you guys deserved to be in finals. It's just so unfortunate that you had to leave

Crete- I thought you guys were a choir with a load of talent, but couldnt completely execute. You guys were hitting your moves, and singing your parts, but I feel like your enthusiasm and facials were lacking.

Mt. Prospect- I honestly was going back and forth on this one. You guys sang, to use a pun on your show, the living daylights out of your songs. However, I felt your choreography was sloppy. Luckily, it's only the first competition.

North- You guys absolutely rocked it! Whenever I watch your guys' show I remember last years show and how much this is of an improvement. You deserved to be in finals, and congrats.

IC City- Idk, your guys show was good but I didnt really feel it was great until the "Women is Dead" song. You guys did however deserve where you ended up, so congrats.

Linn Mar- What can I say, Linn-Mar impressed me again. I went into your guys' critique (cuz I was a judge assistant) and I agree when Tara said "You guys have a really solid show". I actually had you guys higher than you finished.

Washington- I only got to watch you guys during the night, and I must say WOW. Every year you guys' impress me more and more. I feel that you guys deserved to finish higher than you did also

CR Kennedy- When I saw the results for Johnston a couple of weeks back, I was worried that you guys weren't gonna have as good of a show. I'm glad that you put my worries to rest. That was phenomenal! It's such a different show from last year in my opinion. Congrats on the GC

My Day Rankings
1st- Kennedy
2nd- From what I heard I'd have to say Wash
3rd- Linn-Mar
4th- City High
5th- Sauk Prarie
6th- IC West
7th- North
8th- Mt. Prospect
9th- Crete Monee

My Finals Rankings
GC- Kennedy
1RU- Linn-Mar
2RU- Washington
3RU- City
4RU- City West
5RU- North

This was very fun, and I got to meet some people who really love to have fun. And are fun!
Thank you to all who made Great River a success

So I am chillin in my hotel room with Jayson, Megan, Nick and Corina and I am going to spend a few min to type out some thoughts:

Cedar Rapids Washington "Celebration"- First time I have seen you this year and I know you were having a rough year, but you kicked some major butt!! I am VERY happy to see how you did and you performed to the level i had wanted.

Crete Monee- This is the first time I have ever seen you guys, and the first time was a decent one. I liked the backdrop and the opener outfits. Sadly the mics wouldn't work for you at all and I couldn't hear what sounded like good solos. I hope to see you again in the future

Mt. Prospect- I would have to agree with Spencer, biggest disappointment. The theme was there, the songs were there... it just, died. I hope to see you again soon!

Iowa City West- Last time i saw you was in 05. I REALLY enjoyed your show. The day performance was (in my opinion) MUCH better then your finals performance. Really good sound, and I really enjoyed the "Supergeek" song.

Iowa City High- Much improved from last year. The opener and second song was really good, but I felt it did go down from there. I have to say Damon, I was sort of let down by your novelty this year with them. I just stayed there not knowing exactly how to react. But a very nice job. Kind of like West, the finals performance seemed to lack.

Davenport North- I haven't seen you since 06 and I was very impressed with you! I would have to agree with Mr. Peters that Davenport has AMAZING soloists. Every time someone touched a mic I knew i'd be impressed. The last two songs were the highlight of the show! Loved it very much. can't wait to see you in another year

Cedar Rapids Kennedy- WOW!!! After day round, i knew that you took it. A very good show. The flow is weird, but you execute every song very well. Damon- GREAT novelty here. I enjoyed it a lot. I can't wait to see you at your competition next weekend.

Linn-Mar- I really enjoyed the show. The only complaint.... the solo for the Maroon 5 medley... just wasn't feeling it. I enjoyed the whole show. The dresses were nice, but it had to hit the light just right to look nice.

Cedar Rapids Washington- I really liked the show! This is going to be a bit biased, but I i love you kids and its been a rough year and you really bumped it up!

I had a great time, tho I pictured results just a bit different personally.

GC- Kennedy
1st RU- Washington/Linn-Mar
2nd RU- Linn-Mar/Washington
3rd RU- Iowa City West
4th RU- Davenport North
5th RU- Iowa City High

Top three were solid (in my opinion) and all performed their heart out for finals.
The bottom three it seemed as if there wasn't much improvement...

I really would love to see scores... GOOD JOB TO ALL GROUPS.

GO HAPPINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought this could be your week, and it was. Storm said your finals show was by far the best you've done all year, so way to step it up big time in finals. You continue to do amazing work that makes me so proud year after year, so sincere thanks and congrats!!
Also to Iowa City, way to close your year out on a high note!! Very tough line-up with lots of very evenly matched schools, and you came through with a very strong finish. Great job!
God Bless, Damon Brown

Congrats to Kennedy, you guys definitely deserved this one.

Also congrats to Iowa City West for moving up in finals!

Kennedy's win means every group with "Cedar Rapids" in front of its name has won at least one GC this season

Just got home from Great River and I have to say that my new favorite group this year is "Lights" from Mundelein. I have never heard a girls group sing like that before (well ... I guess "Faces" from Crete would be another great girls group). I saw them perform back in 2004, but didn't remember them to be as good as that. From the first second of their show I was amazed. I was really disappointed not to see them in finals.

Congrats to all of the groups today!

Kevin Breazeale choreographed one song for Iowa City West... their closer.

Tara Tober also judged one song for Davenport North... not sure which one.

I find that interesting. Is that common? I'm not sure I've ever seen a choreographer of a group actually score one of their own groups.

OK, so I arrived in Davenport just in time to see Anamosa, and watched every group straight through to Kennedy. Let me start off with how I had the varsity groups ranked after the day round:

1) C.R. Kennedy
2) C.R. Washington
3) Davenport North (interchangable)
4) Iowa City West (interchangable)
5) Linn-Mar
6) Sauk Prairie
7) Iowa City High
8) Crete-Monee
9) Benton
10) Mount Prospect
11) Anamosa

Here are my thoughts on the shows I saw, in performance order:

Anamosa: The difference between your show at Benton and your show today was day and night. It's an entertaining show. I don't understand the brooms with the eyes, though... Keep working at it and you should be successful.

Benton: What can I say? You guys ROCKED. If the difference in Anamosa's performance was day and night, the difference in yours was... a lot more than that! I was not impressed last week, but that was understandable considering you were performing in exhibition. I couldn't believe how well the show went today. The male ballad soloist (the short one) is amazing - I had him in my top three for Best Male Soloist. Keep it up!

Iowa City West: Great, great show. I didn't get to see your show at Mount Pleasant so I was glad I was able to catch it here. Antwon does some really nice things with you guys. The guys' number is hilarious. The only thing that "bothered" me was your closer. What's with the trios in the back? You guys treat the whole song is like a dance break with some backround vocals. If you take the trios away and still have some vocal power, it'd be way more impressive.

Sauk Prairie: Saw you guys at Onalaska and was wondering, "What was that?" Not today, though. I really enjoyed the show. The uniqueness of it is what makes it so interesting. It's so clean and you guys perform it so well, too. I know I'm not the first person to tell you this but some more intense choreography would really help your scores. Also, if the group as a whole sang more often that might help, too - there was one part where the group didn't sing for abour 4 minutes or so. Glad to see you made finals, but too bad that you had to leave!

Crete-Monee: It didn't seem like it was meant to be. The microphones refused to work for you guys, but the little that we could hear of your soloists was quite good. Your dancing is pretty tight but could use some work. The main problem for you guys was I couldn't understand your words. I loved your closer!

C.R. Washington Celebration: It was a solid show. You guys are consistently one of the better prep groups, keep it up.

Mount Prospect: Probably the most disappointing group of the day. Maybe it was because I was coming into this with such high expectations. Your backdrop thing is AMAZING. Your choice of theme was AMAZING. And then the show was... eh. I will cut you a lot of slack because it is your first competition, and I know how those can go. The potential is completely there and I really hope you guys do well in the future.

Davenport North: Allright, I have to say it. I loved you guys. I saw you at Mount Pleasant and it was a good, solid show. Today, it was an amazing show. Your moves and music are tight and clean, and your soloists are stunning. I'm assuming it was the ballad soloist that won best male soloist, because he definitely deserved it. Your show is great and I really, really hope that you can improve your position in finals after catching a break. Go NSE!

Iowa City High: I liked the show a lot. The novelty number is pretty funny. Any group that dares to do "I Drove All Night" will always be compared to Clinton, so maybe that was why I wasn't a huge fan of that number. It really is a good show and you guys should continue to do well with it,

Linn-Mar: Ahh another interesting group here. You guys do sing well. And for the most part, you dance well. I guess I just wish for a more powerful opening. The choreography in the opener is not exactly powerful, and so to make it work it has to be perfectly clean. For this performance, it wasn't there - there seemed to be a lack of energy. Your songs all seemed to end abruptly, too. But like I said, your vocals were all there. I know you guys had a less-than-stellar daytime performance last year at Great River, and then turned it on at night. Maybe you did that again today? You just can't always count on that, though. Good luck with the rest of your season.

C.R. Washington Momentum: I was coming into this having heard that you guys were having a down year. Let me tell you, that is not the case. This show starts off with a bang and doesn't stop. It was all clean, it was all there, and it was great. I can't wait to see you guys again next week at Kennedy. Good luck tonight, I really hope you do well.

C.R. Kennedy: Here it is. Going into this competition, you guys had to be the favorites. After seeing you, that didn't change. Even a song that I wasn't really a fan of (Toledo Surprise) I still had to like, just because it was performed so well. There's really not much I have to say about you, because I'd just be saying "You guys were great." If you don't win this competition by a sizable margin I would be very surprised.

---
Some thoughts I have on this competition in general:

I was surprised that finals continued. With five of the six finalist groups having to head west to get home, I think it was a risky decision. We'll see how it turns out. I know it sucks when competitions have to cancel finals, but I think the safety of the groups should be taken into effect.

Also, is Kevin Breazeale judging finals? I believe he was listed in the program as a choreographer of Iowa City West... I am surprised to see him add to the scoring judges for finals, considering one of his groups is actually in finals.

Great River was very well run. Excellent performance venue and very nice people. I had a good time there today.

Good luck to all groups in finals!

Kevin Breazeale choreographed one song for Iowa City West... their closer.

Tara Tober also judged one song for Davenport North... not sure which one.

As for not canceling finals... the West and Central faculty were in touch with the National Weather Service all through the afternoon, receiving frequent updated weather reports and they made a decision on the information gathered.

Ok...

This is quick...

Linn Mar just went in finals. They were fantastic!

The day round order was...

1st- Cedar Rapids Kennedy
2nd- Cedar Rapids Washington
3rd- Linn Mar
4th- Iowa City High
5th- Iowa City West
6th- Sauk Prairie

Sauk Prairie had to leave due to a bad weather forecast... so 7th place Davenport North took their place in finals.

The judges in the day were David Legg, Stephen Brockway, and Dina Else. They all had Kennedy in first... and each had Washington in second.

For final... the judges are... David Legg, Stephen Brockway, Kevin Breazeale, and Tara Tober. Dina was ill so, she departed from the competition. So... finals is an open ballpark.

Other results...

PREP-
1st- Mundelein (girls)
2nd- Cedar Rapids Washington (Celebration)
3rd- Mundelein (mens)
4th- Cedar Rapids Kennedy
5th- Cedar Rapids Washington (Vivace)

3A-
1st- Benton
2nd- Anamosa

Best Female Soloist- Mundelein (girls)
Best Male Soloist- Davenport North
Best Band- Iowa City West
People's Choice- Cedar Rapids Kennedy "Chanteurs"

Both Davenport West "West Connection" and Davenport Central "Central Singers, Inc." had their exhibition performances cancelled due to the bad weather forecasts.

In day round... this is what I had...
1st- Cedar Rapids Kennedy
2nd- Iowa City West
3rd- Linn Mar
4th- Sauk Prairie
5th- Cedar Rapids Washington
6th- Iowa City High

7th- Davenport North
8th- Crete Monee
9th- Mt. Prospect

Kennedy is on their second song right now... I must say... I can't see this competition going any other way than Kennedy with the GC... but 2nd-6th is up for grabs!

We'll talk more later my friends!
