regardless of these rants, congrats to all who participated last night. EVERYONE was fantastic. special note to Los Al, who's choirs i saw for the first time . I was blown away by you. You guys were fantastic. To Rancho Verde, after waiting since aztec to see you again, i was spell bound. You truly captivate with your show. Great job. And to all who competed, AMAZING work. Its been an amazing year and i cant wait for next years first competition...but a little rest right now doesn't hurt either...oh wait...pop show =)

thank you! and congrats to all the other choirs, especially burbank! you guys truly deserved it and you all have such a high amount of class.
and burroughs - you guys perform like no one else and EVERY single person in your group is so entertaining to watch.
sadly, this was my very last competition, and i have to say i had an AMAZING time. seriously, this has been one of the funnest weekends i've ever had thanks chula for hosting such a great competition!

Guys, really?

Show choir isn't set in how you have to perform. There are many ways to go out on stage with. Just like in anything. Sports, for example. Every team plays differently. For basketball, one team may use full court press, and different zones and such. Not every team is alike. But they still play the same game. It's the same for show choir. Some groups go traditional, singing well with difficult choreography. They do amazingly well. Some groups take a less traveled road and go with themes, singing well, and different choreography. They do amazingly well. But its STILL SHOW CHOIR.

Take your opinion that you have right now. Now, throw it out. No one cares. It's show choir. This competition is PAST. It happened already. You can fight all you want about the results, but you're just making yourselves look like complete idiots.

A joke that is somewhat tasteless, but it is true (and not to be taken offensively. It's just in good fun considering the situation)

What do the special olympics and fighting on the internet have in common?
Even if you win, you're still retarded.

Again, a tasteless excuse of a joke, but it still makes sense.

You guys are making show choir look bad as a whole when you fight like this. Not to mention the fact that you destroy your own choir's reputation.

Give it up. It's over. Take your anger and use that toward next year.

That's my rant. I love you all.

Again, dancing and singing in itself can be mind numbingly boring. If there is no story or deeper meaning behind a show choir set, then it just becomes a bunch of kids singing and dancing on stage.

QUOTE

In a show choir competition being "sharp" when you dance is MORE important than having air cannons. Sorry if you fail to see this. You can create your own genre where choirs can come and test out the latest air cannons and you can base their entire performance off of that instead of their natural talent and ability.

I fail to see why you think Powerhouse is so powerful because of their air canons. Powerhouse is so powerful because of their story, and their intensity and emotion in telling that story. People don't start sobbing in the audience when Powerhosue performs because they are being blasted with Co2. They sob because Powerhouse is truly powerful.

QUOTE

It's incredibly insulting to say that Burbank is not original, artsy, or creative.

Insulting? How insulting? Like parading a decapitated tigger insulting?

First you tell me that Powerhouse is nothing more than their air canons, and then you play the victim when I question the creativity of Burbank?

QUOTE

I invite you to sit and listen ONLY to both shows and tell me who has the most breath taking vocals.

Both choirs have excellent vocals. In Sync has a very nice male sound, however powerhouse seems more in tune and blended. One thing you must not mistake for "good vocals" is "loud vocals". Burbank is very loud, and many people mistake loud for good.

QUOTE

Then watch both shows with no sound, and see who has the best and cleanest choreography. Add those two together and you've got yourself a champ.

Show choir is about the overall impact of the combination of singing and dancing. Not plugging your ears or covering your eyes during a performance. If that was the basis for determining the superior choir, I would've quit long ago.

WOW! Passive aggressive much? Okay you win, Burbank is un-original, has lack-luster out of tune vocals, and is not creative because they don't have air canons, OH and when I watch their show I don't feel any emotional power. Is that really what you think? That's very sad. The truth is in the tapes kid. Watch them and you'll see. Perhaps you're too busy with your head up your .... to realize that there may be another choir that deserves winning just as much as your group does! Burbank won, and you're coming onto this VERY public forum and degrading your choir by saying these very insulting things. I heard about the Tiger thing last year on this website, but you are NO better by saying these things.[/quote]

Wow. That's a long time, at least for me!

I'm pretty sure our set is about 10 minutes this year [??] But I know for sure that Powerhouse's is around 15/ 15 1/2.

Their whole show is 15 1/2 mins.
Thats amazing to me
We take 21mins

Personally I think everyone did really well.
all choirs gave it their all.
It was my first time seeing In Sync, and I was impressed.

Everyone has their own opinions and thats fine, we don't need people to argue other's opinions. what's done is done. And the judges scored how they did.

Both groups did great, and either could have taken the cake.
Burbank and Burroughs have taken risks, and the world gets to see the beauty of creativity.

Again good job to everyone. Congrats to all.

p.s. SOUND SENSATIONS ARE AMAZING!!!!!

Thank you Burbank/Burroughs children for proving you all ARE human and that we ALL have different opinions.

Congrats to all groups! I'm sad to hear that the Los Al show was not streamed on the feed. All of the midwest is waiting to see what Mr. Moellenkamp has done with his new group.

From what I've been told... all four judges had Burbank in "1st".

I wish I could have been there to support "Powerhouse"... but it was either FAME NYC or SoCal... and I chose NYC. I was hanging out in La Crosse, Wisconsin with some very dear show choir friends (alumni) though. When one of us finally got the results from SCC on their cell phone at 4 AM... we had that same person read the results (5th-1st... captions before the top two placings... just like any show choir MC would). We gave standing ovations in the restaurant to all groups after each placing was announced. It was fun and nerve racking.

gigabiteph and rizer: can you please take this discussion to private messaging you have BOTH been out of line. 2 pages of you guys bickering is enough! Use messaging please.

Powerhouse is Amazing!

In Sync is Amazing!

Los al judges preferred Burroughs, So Cal judges preffered Burbank. Its just personal preference. There is no denying that your both in my opinion 2 of the top 3 choirs in the country. Thank you both for your amazing sets and we all can't wait to see what you come up with next year!

That squabble is one of the main problems I have with show choir. Groups sometimes try so hard to get 1st place, but forget that this is not a sport like football. There are no touchdowns to be found in show choir. You can not truly control your own fate.

The inherent problem comes from trying to objectify the subjective. Sure, we can all agree that there are certain "tiers" of performances. Anybody who is suggesting that some of these top placing groups are "bad" are ignorant, biased, or a sore loser (or all of the above). But when we start trying to organize those great groups' performances into rankings, it can be ridiculous.

In 2006, at the Hart competition, Carlsbad got 1st place, Burroughs got 2nd, and Burbank got 4th. This can only mean one thing: the judges found that Carlsbad was the most impressive group there. This was different than what had been happening all year, though. Many students dismissed the results as a joke, saying the judges got it wrong. But who are they to say that? If one is so eager to deal out judgement as to what is right and wrong, then how do they know that they aren't the ones that are wrong.

The system that we have gives the judges so much power over the perception of groups. And, sadly, it also influences the groups' perception of themselves.

Show choir will never reach its full potential as long as the groups are so focused on beating everybody else. Maybe the placement system needs to be reimagined, or done away with altogether. Perhaps a different attitude needs to be encouraged in the competitions. Either way, groups let the uncontrollable affect their own performances.

This post has rambled on a bit longer than I had anticipated. I just think that people need to start viewing this whole thing with more perspective. This isn't a sport where you can gameplan around another group's strategy. This is art: you have to be true to yourself. As long as individuals are focused on beating everybody else rather than being the best that they can be, we will continue to engage in petty arguments and watch sets that could have been so much more.

~Chris

so pretty much what i get from this squabble is that everyone has their own opinion (and their entitled to that) and people should stop trying to change it...

please and thank you

Ok, this is getting a little out of hand, and I think I'm being misunderstood. Both Powerhouse and In Sync are excellent choirs in different ways and I apologize if I got a little heated responding to some comments. My purpose in the discussion here was to question the wisdom of valuing the unique traits of In Sync over the unique traits of Powerhouse. I tire of people who think I am bashing Burbank.

Good day to you all.
