in 2011, Burbank went to Fairfield's competition in early March with no previous competition record for that year, competed in a large gymnasium, and walked away as Grand Champions with Best Vocals, and Best Choreography (not to mention a perfect score from one of the judges).

So comparing the Crystal Classic to the Choral Classic really has no relevance. The original thought, by Neil, was that Burbank is at a disadvantage having to compete in a gym and "early" in the season assuming less experience for Burbank "In Sync" compared to WV "Sound Check." To a degree, Neil's thought makes some sense, but as stated Burbank has excelled in a gym setting before and won in an early-March competition with a nearly-perfect show from a judge AND spectator point of view. They'll be ready for this competition - not saying they will win, but just saying they aren't going to be using a "It was a gym…" or "It was an early comp…" excuse, because that's for rookies. Burbank is not a rookie.
So I just wanted to clarify that. We, as a show choir community, don't always have to compare every little detail and determine who, what, where is best. There isn't a definitive answer for everything nor should there be - that's what makes show choir and all of us unique.

Oh, you think you're fancy, huh? So what you're saying is, what if Glenwood signs up in the next month and sweeps the whole damn thing But at the heart of it anyone could win (except those who are not attending).
This probably isn't worth bringing up again, but I feel the logical need because the original statements were taken off topic and the conversation essentially became a red herring.

There's a lot of variation in the Midwest. Some do it by signup date. Some do it by group size. It all depends.
I guess this is a topic for another place, but in the south we do it by division (the larger the division the later the slot) and then we do it by sign up time typically! I've always been confused by the way the midwest does divisions! Because in the south we have so many groups that just couldn't compete with "large division" groups because of sheer numbers (my group has 32 singer dancers with only 6 guys). I don't know how y'all go about this, but its odd to think that even though we both do show choir and we both got it from the same place we have different rules and such!!!

I really agree with this. Being an Alumni of Marysville and having attended that competition it was a fantastic experience. But "anything but sweeping Fairfield would have been a failure" is a total truth. In Sync's show that year was absolutely spectacular, and quite possibly my absolute favorite burbank show. Marysville's show in 2011 is even my favorite that the group has ever done, but Burbank was nearly flawless that evening.
That being said I have to echo the thought that, "the two contests are practically incomparable." The talent level at this competition is always staggering. Anyone who attended last year or pretty much ever can attest. I think Waubonsie Valley takes vocals with their stylistic integrity, and dynamics. Choreography and band are both a toss-up. I give choreography to WV because, Dwight Jordan, and have you seen those kids dance!!! But California back up bands are the cream of the crop, and even if they don't win best band because of adults their score will be outrageous and help their overall position.
All in all it's going to be one fantastic day of talent. The biggest question. Will we see Wheaton's daytime or evening show? Or Both?

Wheaton will perform Friday night and Saturday night. My guess is they will perform the first show on Friday and the second on Saturday. Guess I'll be going to the Friday show this time for the first time.
For a group at Burbank's level, especially in 2011 with that amazing show, anything but sweeping Fairfield would have been a failure.. This competition is so beyond the 2011 Crystal Classic when it comes to competitive consistency of groups attending. The two contests are practically incomparable.

To predict finals at this point seems impossible, but I do believe that predicting the grand champion is a little less difficult. To me, this is a competition for Waubonsie to lose. I understand that Burbank is an amazing group, and it may indeed come down to WV and Burbank competing for the championship, but I just don't see Burbank winning. By March 8, Burbank will have competed maybe 1 time. Also, Claifornia groups are spoiled and are used to theatres and auditoriums for performances. Performing in a gym at the beginning of the season seems to me like two major strikes against InSync. Waubonsie will be in midseason form, maybe even at their peak, and have won the Choral Classic every year they have attended.
In my opinion, Waubonsie comes into this competition and sweeps. Burbank's vocals would be their only saving grace, but against Mark Myers and WV, nobody stands a chance vocally.
While Waubonsie is a vocal freight train, I think Waukee, John Burroughs, Hastings, Wheaton, Solon, and a few others would "stand a chance vocally" not to mention Burbank (who defeated JB at hart last year). Let's not lay blanket statements, here.
