I will try to post the awards for festival division when awards happen, no wifi at the school makes it very hard, currently an hour behind schedule.

All directors have met and decided that the competition will go on. We still have sound with a generator, so we will try the best we can!!

This is good news for all the kids, at least. Can we assume, unless full power is restored, that the live stream won't be able to resume?

Since there seems to be a lot of misinformation here. The official schedule is below.

Also, the WV State State Show Choir Festival is sponsored by the WV Vocal Music Association which consists of the vocal music teachers across the State of West Virginia. We meet each year and all rules and regulations are approved by the teachers. This year especially, we had a wonderful show choir meeting where the attending directors discussed many aspects of the festival and made several changes to the festival. Hurricane and myself have been working hard to provide a wonderful festival to the amazing show choirs attending. We look forward to hosting everyone this Saturday.

When did Musselman get put back into the Medium Mixed division? Earlier this week when the newest schedule was posted, they were listed as Large Mixed. What are the group size parameters?

The "newest schedule" that was posted earlier this week was actually the old schedule. It seems there were two different schedules floating around. One with divisions based on school size (the old one) and one schedule based on choir size (the new/accurate one). I think the WV directors have done a fine job commenting on this thread and they've been clear that there was a consensus among WV directors to go by group size. So tl;dr: school size Musselman would've been in large, by group size they are medium.

The schedule I was referring to is identical to the one above with the exception of large mixed being listed after Musselman rather than medium. I can't post screenshots, but I have them of the various schedules that have been posted to share performance times with family. I do understand there was some confusion with the change from going by school size to group size and recent incorrect info being posted that said they were still going by school size. My last question wasn't questioning the grouping or decision; I was only curious what numbers were necessary for medium and large groups as that is info I hadn't seen anywhere.

Classes by school size or choir size? Ravenswood was reported as having withdrawn from the WV state festival and looks to be attending Powhatan (VA)? What's going on?

Glad to clear up! My apologies, Ravenswood has backed out, and instead will be attending the Powhatan Diamond Classic this weekend! Also, Classes are by group size.

Several schools have opted out of attending states this year due to its location and the process involved in selecting judges and scoring systems. There are 3 WV schools competing at Powhatan instead this weekend.

Out of curiosity, what exactly are WV show choirs upset about? Is the notion that Red Hot isn’t a deserving state champion over the last few years? Reading the comments, it seems like a pretty complicated situation in that:

a) not a ton of schools have the ability to host
AND
b) there seems to be a relatively complicated process for planning this event and picking the judges.

Perhaps it’s just me, but I feel as though it should be clarified that the overall lack of satisfaction is with the state instead of Hurricane. Perhaps I’m misreading the situation, but from an outside perspective that is how it seems.

I also believe classes are chosen by choir size, not school size.

Hurricane deserves their championships and they will win again this year and it will be deserved. It doesn't matter where the comp is and how it's set up, everyone knows they will win. They are good. But the host school should not have as much influence over the judging of the event as it does; while members of WVVMA do have a say, it is not equal. Some programs knew they will do well this year and some knew they wouldn't, based only on the program's relationship with the host program. It's always a biased system, but some years are worse than others. Some consistency and clear policies would certainly be welcome.

See, now we are getting conflicting information. I agree that consistency/clear policies are necessary in any case, but we have one set of information saying that every school has an equal say in the judging/scoring, while we have another saying that the host school has more influence than they should.

There’s this implication that Hurricane can pick judges in order to give themselves an advantage and also put others at a disadvantage. I think that’s a dangerous train of logic to begin following that enters a bit of a conspiratorial realm. I have doubts as to whether Hurricane is seeking to put other programs at a disadvantage simply because they have “beef” with them.

Joe you are hitting a lot of nails on heads right now. Classes were based on school size but then made a pivot a few weeks ago to change to choir size. There are so many layers to this onion when it comes to the WV festival, and as you can tell from the comments here there are some raw emotions at play. Honestly, I just hope the audience enjoys the show. I know Class B alone is gonna be hella exciting. 4 of the 5 schools have a win this year and the 5th was 2nd in their division. There's a time and a place to argue locations and implicit bias and protocols... let's use this week to let the students focus on their craft and wait til after to talk about how the sausage is made. (that's not directed to you Joe, just a general request).

I’m pretty sure a director posted below that if you’re hosting, you get to choose judging. I dont think its ‘not fair’ because I believe the average eye could see Hurricane’s program is lengths and bounds above the state, but could the state maybe let the winner of each year host the next (not allowing them to compete), allowing more groups to potentially win the title?? Good Luck to everyone at West Virginia states, and you NEVER know; Winfield I believe beat hurricane in 2021.

With all due respect to your idea, that isn't the best, yes Hurricane has a streak of winning, but making a rule that would make them sit out would make them not able to defend their title, and that's more of a punishment to the kids, the kids at hurricane, sing and dance, and do what they are taught just like every other show choir in America

I would not want to see a system where a group is excluded from competition. Hurricane doesn't cheat. They win fair and square and should have the same opportunity to compete every year.
