I'm not going to lie, I am really excited for the state to see what Musselman has been building over the past few years! It looks like our slot at 2:30 is right before Festival and Single-Gender awards so we hope y'all can check us out!

Why is Sissonville in Tier 1?

It is usually based on school size but I guess this year maybe they didn’t it on group size?

That’s what I originally thought as well

The WV State Festival has gone back and forth over the years. Some years it is one general championship division (i.e. Tier I) - any choir wanting to throw their hat in the ring to compete for the "state title;" and then other years there has been a broad championship division with subdivisions for class A, class B, and class C with both awards by class and then overall championship division awards. I generally prefer the former, and what the 2022 version is doing, but I'm also not a West Virginian.

We have a festival and. championship division. The festival division is designed for smaller choirs while the Championship division is for those schools who want to compete for Grand Championship Overall. Schools get to decide what division they want to enter.

I could have been more clear; my comment was only about the Championship Division. We know there's also a Festival Division and it's coded here as Tier II (although has been coded as Tier IV in previous years during the Class A-B-C format). Festival is an awesome option for those smaller/developing choirs.

Ive always been curious as to why groups that host the event compete?? WV states is the only comp ive seen do this besides st.clairesville.

Because the school is merely a venue. It’s not like the Hurricane boosters are the ones finding the judges, doing the prep work, etc. Back when South Dakota had a state contest, the host school competed.
