To those that say risers are so great; that groups are flawed because they do not use them:
In my opinion, most groups with risers (not all) have risers with no decorations, and thus they are an eyesore to me and many others not associated with show choir at all. People in show choir that see them everyday and especially those that use them are brainwashed into believing they look great. The effect they give on stage is hardly greater than the blocky-ness and, in my own words, *an* “elementary-school-glee-club” style *look*. I hope so much that choir*s* move away from risers that are disturbingly bland and either go back to cool looking boxes or, another and more time consuming option, spruce up your risers into cool looking raised roman coliseum steps or a mountainside cliff - I don't know. What I am trying to say is that when I see people talking about how other groups "need or should have" risers, I laugh to my self on how retarded that sounds.
To Arcadia:
Your first song has a great soloist and your group vocals are fantastic. When the guys are singing by themselves it sounds great - like real men. Your choreography is cool, however, for the entire song you guys just stand in one place. You never move more than two feet from your initials spots. But you know what... that is the way all the other groups are too so I just might be surprised because it is just that this might be the first time I have seen Arcadia do it. Your A Capella was fantastic. I think tenors were a tad bit off key. To those that say you had major vibrato: I did not hear it and that must mean either I was not listening (which I definitely was since you are my Alma Mater) or that you were not really doing it enough for it to be disturbingly noticeable. I will put my money on the latter. I think what I enjoyed most was the greatness of your closing number. It was fantastic! The dancing was great. The vocals were better than anyone else. Even the “box people” did awesome. Therefore, in the end, you disserved what you guys got and I would be surprised if you did not get first at every competition considering how all the other groups did last night.
To Burroughs:
I am so happy you opened with the Muse! I think you should have gotten second just for that. However, you guys have awful vocals and your soloists must have been super nervous or really out of breath (it was the first song though...hrmmmm). Very good bass parts on the A Capella. Nevertheless, the last half of the song was a mish-mash of notes that was not pleasant for me. You have a good dynamic range but what it did not include was dynamic flow, and by that I mean your progression from softs to louds was poor. Your closer is just a bunch of YELLING and out of tune yelling, at that. Anyway good job and I hope to see those problems fixed by the next competition.
First of all, I would like to say congrats to all the choirs last night! It was amazing to say the least. For the first competition of the year, it was alot of fun.
The Burrough's Soloist who sang Shadowland, WOW. You are really amazing!
Also I was wondering if anyone recorded Serrano, because I kind of wanted to watch ourselves and compare because I have been watching the rest of the videos on YouTube people have put on the internet.

HOWEVER the scores last night... everyone please keep your heads up that was only one competition and more to come a long... i just hope this year i can make friends with a lot of people from many different schools. but all i can say is im soo EXCITED

aztec sing XXXII. my god... how i've missed show choir competitions. first off it was very nice seeing all the choirs in attendance, sitting in front of mr. fitz, going up with a bunch of awesome people, watching my friends in the other choirs lol, and of course last but defintely not least seeing all of my friends from chula. chulajuana pride cheaaah.
burbank: im really enjoying this aquired taste to the diversity of your show. when i first saw it a month ago i took it in with a confused, but optimistic acceptance. like i told some of you last night regarding your intitial costumes, the first word that came to mind was unfortunately "anubis", however ive accepted it. i do have to raise speculation to the sound system tweeks that made you all sound, unfortunately quieter. your band also sounded very quiet; i and probably the entire auditorium really expected the power of the burbank orchestra, however it fell short of our expectations...hey...its citrus college, what can you do?!?!vocals (intonation) was unbelievable. ladies, like what i said last night lol, sounded like xenas army, and the men, of course under hercules' lead. ahaha my analogies are ridiculous. i cant wait for the extra additions, it all sounds good so hurrry up. congratualtions on second place..sucks going first. i love you all.
brea: i was unfortunately in the back helping burbank with your risers, so i could only observe what the peripheral view between the wings, gave me. however the intensity of your show from just the side looked solid. i cant say much more but congrats and sorry about the penalty. i can see that well be seeing plenty of your people on stage at the awards ceremonies.
burroughs: keaton is awesome. the eneriges from everyone from eddie and the entire front row to christian at the top of the pyramid, were obvious and made the show that much better from start to finish. agina is amazing on shadowlands, and the entire choir was just as on. i didnt really care much for the a capella to be honest; i was really looking forward to seeing you guys top it off from last year. hezekiah walker gave you a really good song choice and it sounded AMAZING. vocals and show was all there. i loved the gospel energy and feel, and it was done clean and effective. im really looking forward to your additions. eddie and woody make my chuckle.
arcadia: in a positive way, its awesome seeing you guys with a costume change..it really takes a nice effect to your show. the blend has gotten even better, but i feel there are limited dynamics. however, lots of energy nonetheless. the a capella was good, but i think the few vibrato additions made it fall short to the legendary & FLAWLESS arcadia a capella, were all used to hearing. congrats on 1st place.
el rancho: you have great potential and an enjoyable set to showcase it. the energy that i saw through your director, that sat in front of me, to each of you on stage, was very pleasing. i think with cleaning up in trasitions and a little on the choreography...it would be beyond BUENO! looking forward to your set at burroughs.
serrano: ive only heard but i havent seen. ive got my eye on you guys now.

I have to agree with the ballad and the girls vibrados. It sounded like they were right on the mic. But I have to add, the mics they used last night weren't terribly wonderful. The overhead mics were great but the handheld mics made every solo and singer sound harsh and nasaly. Since I can remember the mics in the front have always picked up voices in the front row, destroying any blend.
Brea WOWED me! Great Dance moves! I think all shadowlands were good LOL you guys all captured the emotion of the song very well! Props to Brea for getting showmanship, Burbank for placing second and Burroughs for third (i liked the shadowland solo too!)!
Looking forward to seeing you guys even more during the rest of competition season!

what actually happened is that a leg on a riser collapsed so a very helpful observer (i think it was someone from db) went under& held it up during the show. (thank you)

As a JBHS alum, I was real proud of my alma mater for doing so well. We really never do start off with our "real" set, but I think it builds audience anticipation for more to come. Burbank was awesome too, I definitely can say I'm proud to come from the city with two of the best groups in the west.
My only real issue with the night was some really interesting vowel sounds coming from almost all of thr groups. It is early, but I hope those discrepincies will improve. Arcadia actually sounded different in the ballad this year, you have a woman or two singing with actual vibrato, and in my personal mind took away from the flawless straight tone and intonation you guys usually have.
I'm excited to see more new Material from Hart in the coming weeks. And there was a Brea techie under the riser, who looked absolutely petrified. I kind of wished this wasn't my second time seeing Modern Millie done that way, but that's just me.
Serrano, Thriller was great, but as a fan of all things rock, Enter Sandman was a little hard for me to stomach. I was just craving some face shredding guitar! And your band rocks, so I know it could have happened.
Things'll get hot in the weeks coming, especially with added songs and costume changes, can't wait to see the improvement.

I don't post in the student area too often, but I want to clarify this statement with the truth. I have all the final scores right in front of me. Prior to the overtime penalty assessed against Brea and Serrano, the scores looked like this:
Arcadia 315
Burbank 309
Brea 309
Burroughs 306
Diamond Bar 289.33
I am not concerned with who placed where, only with the truth being shared, so all of us are on the same page. In any case, these scores were accurate prior to the penalties. Dave
