Alright this one might wordy but i want to be cleared up by the serious show choir people. i was just a spectator coming along for the ride with my gf whos a fan and vet and she let me in on this site. thought id check it out. i kind of got attached. never thought it but it was as intense as sports.
i talked to different choirs after in the cafeteria. im just looking for some answers.
to start, judges. the whole concept of cheating could be seen stuped. either they did or not i think this is a part of show choir that needs to be corrected. as a soccer player in college, while i was in high school, select, etc, referees would be pulled in from out of state and one that has had no contact to any school to eliminate bias. sounds like show choir should adopt this method. the competition would alone be more respected.
the finals were not as i predicted. i was calling in order from first to fifth place as is: 1 and 2 could go to mt zion or wave connection 3 attache 4 spain park 5 south jones or abertville. i was extremely confused with the actual layout. i was told attache was legendary. awesome. incredible. and the list goes on. but after this past weekend.... really? why. i was told last years was better than this years but this years was not breathtaking nor entertaining. to me mt zion really caught my eye as very very entertaining. my guess is maybe they were too much entertainment, not enough show choir, just a guess. i could see it as that. wave connection was an very excellent performance. the energy was phenomenal. every song got you on the edge of your seat. even the set was great. along with the other tupelo choirs. i was suprised to hear attache tied abertville for best visual. how. i know a thing or two about lights. attaches used one or two lights to cause their tower to light up. both tupelos set used a multiple color design which has to be preprogrammed and opperated during the performance. and the tupelo girls was huge. had to be complex to build. ill give abertville a top spot though in display or visual, whichever it is. suprised they got 2nd. to me their closer was their show. i dont agree that one song can win it. i liked to spectate but even as a person who has never known actual show choir i was a bit pissed for mt zion and wave connectoin. i might just say wave connection should have won it because i enjoyed every song they sang. props to their slow song, a little stevie wonder, and the closer. and the guys number was neat. if the womens choir being the prep choir is true, maybe the "A" team will perform a little bit harder to prove themselves. i looove underdogs though. to me thats halarious. but the crowd loved the women more. good to have two choirs equally competitive. props to the leader of the choirs to produce quality. again mt zion was great. i hope the penalty rumor wasnt the truth. my gf loved the kid who sang the amy part. everyone post. give me some answers. why does the world worship the attache group. wasnt impressed. to me the top two werent in the finals.

so they shoud have won because YOU enjoyed every song they did ... hmmm ... entertainment plays a part, but overall it's ging to be based on vocal and visual quality ... and about the best visuals thing, it's not all about lights or it may not even be about lights at all ... it's mostly about staging and formations, etc ... and Attache was in finals because they execute what they should in a very skilled way, just like every other group ... and the world worships Clinton because: A)they are plain awesome, B)they have 60 GCs to 6 1RU, 3 2RU, and 2 3RU over the course of 32-or-so years

You have to make the distinction between judging and officiating first. Referees in soccer, football, basketball, etc are interpreting a set number of rules so that the game that they are officiating is run fairly and orderly.

Judging, as in show choir, gymnastics, ice skating, etc is different. Judges are using their own judgment to assign a numerical value based on a group's merit in several different categories (such as vocal tone, choreography difficulty, overall effect, etc). So, instead of simply interpreting rules like what officials do, judges are translating performances into numbers. There's a difference in those two tasks.

I could probably post them, but I really don't think it's fair to the groups who competed to have their scores posted for the world to see. That's always been something that a director holds as his/her own, and shares with their group as they see fit. Though I know many of you are dying to have some numbers to look at, it might be best to leave it at placements.

I may be the only person who feels that way, so sorry if I'm spoiling it for anyone.

I have to say I totally agree w/you. It really would serve no purpose at this time to know the scores. And the scores are subjective so knowing how close one show choir was to getting into finals and not making finals might be like rubbing salt in a wound. It was the most exciting and intense competition I've witnessed in years.

Thank you so much, all the compliments, thank you. You have no idea what kind of hellish week we have been through. Unfortunately due to unknown circumstances, we had to come last weekend without a director, so we were proud to say that we could go up there and put on one of the best shows, and just entertain. We didn't do it to win, we did it for the people in the audience, we want to change people, and make a mark on their musical lives. It's all about the music to us, and it's all about the fun. We are truely a family, and I hope you saw that on stage because above all else, that's what we strive for. Again, thank you for all your compliments, and I'll be sure to tell Anthony (the soloist in the ballad) your compliment. I'm the soloist the closer! And believe me, our program will grow and grow of love, music, and passion, and I hope you only hear positive things of us. Thank you!

wow so many groups can learn from yalls show...i love it...yall deffinantly need to you tube center grove to see where spain park is comin from...we are all caught up in competition so much that we forget what we are doin...putting on a SHOW...look it up if your confused...its not the best diction or arm angles...its energy, story, style...so much more than wat we do...spain park you are somethin to watch out for....i think i feel a change in show choir world and i really like it....ROCK ON SPAIN PARK...by the way great solo in the pepsi commercial...i started packin my stuff after i saw yalls show cause i knew yall had it...dont worry, people will catch on to this style of show choir and yall will be leadin

Spain Park- This was my first time to see your show. You blew me away with your opener and ballad vocals! Great ballad soloist. I thought I was going to hate your "commercials" concept from all that I had heard; you showed me otherwise. It's the most fun section of a show I've seen since Laff Jeff did their "Magic" show way back when. Unfortunately, after this section ended, your choreography and vocals got a little sloppy, and I fear that's what kept you and your fantastic show out of finals this week. Nonetheless, you still were fantastic. After watching your performance, I leaned into my wife and said "There's your 2nd guaranteed finalist of the night." Great job this weekend; looking forward to seeing what your rapidly-rising program has in store for us next year!

argh! as much as i'd love to see some actual scores, i suppose that makes sense. however, can you post the actual placements of everyone from prelims? cause apparently the first post about that was wrong...

Show choir judging (whether you like it or not) is extremely subjective. Given the nature of most score sheets, a judge can justify just about anything he or she wants. While one judge considers a show "entertaining" another judge might consider it "dull." Vocals that are "too dark" for one judge might be "too bright" for another. When it comes to art we judge, teach, and learn based on aesthetics. Competitions are a great way to showcase what your group has accomplished, get constructive feedback, and, most importantly, have fun, but when it comes down to it, final rankings are the collective opinion of three-six people. Because of the nature of this genre, very little about show choir judging is objective.

I hope this explanation helps with your questions, and I am happy to hear that you have gotten involved with show choir.

so petal was amazing!
i was already in a bad mood when i arrived but the AA division cheered me right up. i'm so blown away by everyone's performances. i'm from picayune and we only have eleven people in our whole choir. i actually think we have more crew than we do performers. lol. anyways, i'm from illinois and move here in the summer of 2006. Mt. Zion reminded me of what i grew up knowing show choir to be. i loved you guys. best in my opinoin. spain park was also beastly. definately my two favorites. Tupelo is just some plain fun people! we sat next to them at finals while the girls were about to go on cheering and doing the wave. haha. FIRE IT UP TUPELO FIRE IT UP... HEY! that made my night. Albertville were super nice. i talked ot a few girls from there and i loved the black parade closer.

however, i do believe that a few groups were shorted out of finals. attache was good but from what i've heard they've been way better. i've never seen attache back in the day so i can't form an opinion there. fianls was good, but i enjoyed watching prelims better.

i hope to see everyone sometime again! next weekend... west jones!

Congrats to all groups who performed. Just surviving a day of such intense competition is something to be proud of.

I'll definitely be getting the DVD of the entire AA Division, because you were all phenomenal this past weekend.

And thank you, Petal, for having those multiple tv's streaming the live video feed throughout the cafeteria/gym. It was a great idea, hope you continue to do that! It was so convenient!

AA Critiques

Mt. Zion- I didn't get to see your show live this weekend; I did see you at Edgewood a few weeks ago, though, and I liked what I saw of your show then. You're costumes are always so innovative, and are definitely something I look forward to seeing year in and year out. And just like everyone else, I thought "What's Your Name?" was really fun. Creatively written and arranged, although dangerously wordy at times. I expected to see your show in finals. Sorry that didn't happen. Hope that won't keep you guys from returning to The South next year! Great job!

Opelika- You guys just keep getting better. It's obvious to me that you guys have been putting in a lot of hard work over the past few weeks. Don't let your placement discourage you; you put on a fantastic show, and were up against some of the best preliminary performances I've seen in a long time. Not sure if you're competing anywhere else this year, but I expect to see you in finals and placing well very soon. Best of luck in the future.

Homewood- As always, loved your song selections, Thorne. Can't get "Lost Highway" out of my head! Your choreography looked a bit off in prelims, but you stepped it up and put on a great show in finals. Hopefully you aren't hanging your heads about a 5th place finish, because you beat out a lot of good groups to get into finals. Oh, and I loved the closer costumes, as well as your backdrops. I hear the writing on the guys shirts actually spells out "The Network"...? That's crazy cool. Congrats, and keep up the good work. Best of luck at Nationals!

Tupelo- I have not yet seen your show, which I hear is amazing. You are the main reason I intend to order the AA Division DVD instead of the finals DVD. Congrats to you on doing so well at Belmont, and to your women at Petal. Looking forward to watching you on DVD.

Albertville- First of all, congrats on placing so well with such high scores. You all tend to get the short end of the stick more than others, so I was happy to see you do so well here. Though I'm personally not a fan of your actual show, I still enjoyed watching you. Very creative concepts with the boy soloist and fatherly-figure at the end, as well as the backdrops. Would've liked to see a little more difficulty in choreography, but I think you made up for it with your vocal performance. Again, congrats on your placement!

Clinton- Congrats on the GC! I watched your finals performance, and really liked the way you performed. All of your performers seemed to have an intensity about them that I'd not yet seen in some of them, which kept me on the edge of my seat. As always, the costumes and backdrops were the best out there, and your band blew us away. No one can take a stage the way you guys do, and did in finals Saturday night. Again, congrats on the win! Looking forward to your Spring Revue!

I will say though that I'm not really in favor of active show choir directors judging groups that they directly compete against. It would be more understandable if they were judging in a different region or something.

I agree with this. I don't think that it is fair at all. There is a lot of politics it judging and it could be prevented if active directors weren't judges.
