For those of you that would like more information about our event please visit our web site at: http://urbandaleshow choirinvitational.shutterfly.com/

Make sure there are no spaces in the address. For some reason the post creates a space between show and choir. Enjoy and hope to see you next week.

Thanks

I wonder if that comes from the discussion about the spelling of show choir several years ago? that topic was huge. But the site looks great Mr. Woodin was looking around at your old site from when I was in high school trying to connect to a new site and it looks good. In regards to Johnston 2005 Danny boy I thought it was really cool to do that song,a bit out there but i liked it.

I wish this competition was this weekend. There really aren't any competitions in the area this weekend that trip my trigger.

I would say 2007 was the breakout year (Jody's last year). Before then 2004 was the last year they were successful anywhere. Of course a lot of that has to do with them opening with the rock rendition of Danny Boy in 2005.

HEY!!! I loved that opener. I remember watching it at their competition that year and really enjoying that song. Actually I enjoyed the whole show.

That's pretty funny about the novelty though. haha.

Apparently at Cedar Rapids Jefferson's competition later in the year they placed much lower than normal just because one of the judges was furious about them faking that injury. She was on her critique tape just ranting, "How dare you! I was worried sick about that poor girl for two whole songs and it was all a joke?!?!? That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen...blah..blah...blah" You get the idea.

Hehe - actually, it was the fact that her 'injuries' were miraculously cured by a faith healer (she was from the south) that was the final nail in the coffin for us. I guess the fact the faith healer's name was Saint Peter.... Eklund... just didn't mean anything to her.

Predictions after seeing/hearing about most groups:

GC: Ankeny
1RU: Johnston
2RU: Waukee
3RU: Valley
4RU: Kennedy
5RU: Dav. North

BV: Ankeny
BC: Johnston
BB: Ankeny

I like this prediction. I would just switch Kennedy with Valley

I still don't think that was the most controversial Johnston show choir moment ever though.

I remember once back in the early to mid nineties they had a novelty number where a girl in the show choir got injured and couldn't perform, so her parents were suing the school to force them to allow her to participate even though she couldn't dance.

(Johnston used to be well known back then for their original and very humorous novelty numbers. I remember another one where there was a murder during the show and they tried to solve it during the novelty. They would always customize the lyrics to include some of the judges' names as suspects. And in the end the show choir member who was shot stood up and pulled a school lunch grilled cheese out of his inside coat pocket to show how it was so hard it stopped the bullet.)

Anyway...for the one where the girl was injured they would set it up earlier in the show during one of their regular up tempo numbers. She would execute a spin near the edge of the riser and then fall off the edge and crumple as though she had completely wrecked her knee. She would lie there crying and clutching her leg while the rest of the performers kept going. Eventually a couple of crew members or prep show choir members would rush on and carry her backstage.

It was very, very convincing. I remember when they did it at our invitational Mr. Woodin turned to me and said, "Should we have you go check her out?" (I was an EMT at the time.) I replied, "I'm still not sure it wasn't a planned part of the show." About the time I said that here she came back onto the stage with crutches, a neck brace, bandages, etc. for the novelty number.

And then way back in 2009 there was Taylor Martz and her shoe...but most of you wouldn't remember that far back.

Well... they were dancing and smiling to the song... it was... odd to see.

Exactly why I brought this up- some applaud it, others criticize...

Back to the urbandale discussion, sorry to side track

Ha! Well - I have my moments. Often few and far between, so I'll take 'em when I can get 'em.

Off that same Off Kilter album (Etched in Stone), Innovation did a slightly modified version of Run, Run Away. But I always thought "A Walk in the Irish Rain" could end up being a great show choir song, but have yet to hear it done by anyone.

Anyway - back on topic. It IS nice to see Johnston getting such good positive buzz on here (as opposed to the "you stomped all over my grandfather's funeral anthem" from 5 yrs ago...)

Of course a lot of that has to do with them opening with the rock rendition of Danny Boy in 2005.

Could we PLEASE just forget the Danny Boy fiasco? Mostly because I kind of take the blame for that one, haha! Seemed like such a great idea when I heard it at Epcot...

But honestly, I STILL think it's a great interpretation of that song, though in hind sight I guess I can see how some would react so strongly against it. FYI - the same band does a Celtic rock version of Amazing Grace - in case anyone had that song sung at one of their family member's funeral (and was feeling left out by not being able to be offended by a rockin' Danny Boy!).

As scary as it is, I thought that opener was epic. The arrangement was really difficult, but I've never seen students believe that much in a folk song.

It was 2007. 06 was a breakout year for Innovation after a few lackluster years, but in 07 they closed with Too Darn Hot, and it's hard to go wrong with that song.

Yea it seems like it is a good year for johnston. I remember them being really good in either 2006 or 2007. I was senior in 06 and it may have been 07 but they pretty much won where ever they went and took home a lot of grand champs. They won a FAME competition somewhere that year i remember.

but I saw them at UNL this year and johnston's singing is unbelievable. really sets them apart from a lot of groups. If they clean up there show and get everything solid and together they will be amazing. Wish i could go to urbandale comp because it would be awesome to see Ankeny again to and I wish I could see CR Kennedy. Good luck to everyone!

I haven't seen Johnston yet this year. Are they really thriving this year? It seems like it! I can't wait to see them!

Yes they are back i was really impressed with them this year at Midwest Cup. I haven't been around fro a few years but last time i was really around show choir (think spring of '06) they had kinda yielded to to ankeny and urby, however from what i have heard about last year and this year they are back in early '00s form.

As for this year, I personally am excited to see this new aud that urby has. (yes yes i know they had it last year but I was out of area for that comp so couldn't see it and look forward to being out of that gym. As for placements It will be a typical urbandale competition STACKED and hard to decide.

ahhhhhhh GOOOOOOOOOD. sorry! we really need to specify these things people. "CRkennedy" or "happiness" is what we should call them.

with that in mind I actually just put them where I put RIG actually. Everything stays the same just change the name lol

Haha - no worries. You're exactly right - with so many schools sharing similar names, we should take more time to be more specific to avoid any confusion.

It was just funny - because similarly, I just sat there wracking my brain trying to figure out who on earth "RIG" was - I looked at the line up, read each post thinking some other school signed up later, then it finally dawned on me!

Seriously tempted to call in sick to work that weekend. Thankfully, nobody FROM work would read this so I wouldn't get caught!
