something I've wondered...does the money that's made at States go to the host school or the WVMEA?

Part of the money goes back to the WVMEA (the porfits from the door and registration fees) and the host school gets to keep other profits (concessions, t-shirt sales and programs). Don't hold me to this because I may not have the profits broken down exactly the right way. However, when our middle school hosted the middle/jr high school states several years ago, I know we did keep certain parts of the profit for the show choir.

i heard the midland kids aren't allowed to post any more, but if you still read do yall know anything like if there will be a fundraiser for those kids in enterprise effected by the tornados?...if not there should be.

I agree. I was at Fairfield this past weekend (and got to spend some time with Sean and his friends) and they did have donation jars set up and they had a moment of silence to remember the people that lost their lives that day. I think if would be a wonderful thing to do.

yup...and i have kind of a decent idea..or so i think lol..have all of the schools competing vote on who the judges should be (of the judges that would have already previously agreed to judge if asked) and let the judges with the highest votes be the judges so that way nobody can complain about judges

I agree that the WVMEA festival has a lot of flaws, but taking away the host schools power over the festival would be a big step in the right direction.

I believe all of this started with post on another thread earlier this year and with other competition threads. Show choir is and always will be competitive. I am sure that if there was a football.com there would be the same drama.
Everyone must understand that there have been and still are many flaws with the WVMEA competition. Even in the middle school division, there are problems. Last year, Dunbar Singers were disqualified. One of the judges, with only a theatre background, accused our director of singing when he came out to direct an acapala version of our ballad. Another judge, wrote on the score sheet to "keep our fans at home". I believe that some of the problems with the WVMEA could be corrected by not giving the host school complete control. WVMEA members would pick the judges and have a school provide the facilities to hold the competiton. Choirs would be able to select their own time slot based on the previous years results. I believe that this would take away any pressure on the host school and it would make for a better WVMEA. Just my thoughts!

Good Luck to all of the show choirs competiting. You all have worked very hard this year and should be very proud of yourselves.

Oh what a nightmare day that was! I would like to wish everone good luck though & we will be there cheering everone on!

I would like to see all the choirs attending WVMEA give it their best and enjoy the day. For some choirs it's the last competition for the season. It would truly be a shame to allow small irritations interfere with the opportunity to perform and enjoy the day.

I would like to think that the WVMEA is an opportunity to give our state a forum to showcase their show choirs. I would hope it would give the kids an opportunity to support the other groups in the state.
Yes, it is a competition, but that doesn't mean we should go into the day with our eye fixed on the prize. There is so much more to experience.

The support of all choirs and parents are what makes our music programs work. Without a mutual respect and consideration for other choirs, we are no longer performers, but competitors. A competitor can be trained to perform....without passion or love for the event he's training for.

Are we not involved in show choir because we love it? I know at my house, we watch show choir DVD's and sing and dance show choir from this year and years past. Show choir is a huge part of my life because my children love it. It is their passion.

I believe it's the passion of all show choir performers.

That love for show choir is what should be motivating the choirs, not the trophies. When those things become the most important thing then the joy in performing is lost. Yes it's nice to be acknowledged for doing a good job, but it's not the most important thing.

I would hope that WVMEA might be seen as an opportunity for all show choir members to go and perform because they LOVE to perform. I'd like to see JOY on their faces and see them watch other choirs with appreciation and admiration, instead of the critical eye.

And parents...if you have nothing nice to say about another choir, keep it to yourself. Your snide remarks about other groups is a poor reflection not only on you, but your show choir group as well. It's disrespectful behavior that shouldn't be displayed by adults associated with show choir.

The mutual love for show choir is what brings us together at competitions. We should learn to show the respect and consideration due to each and every individual that participates.

Good luck to all the groups attending WVMEA. I hope that it will be a festive day that will be enjoyed by everyone..no matter who wins.

I totally agree! Too bad Capital won't be there but we will be there cheering everyone on!

LoL that sounds like something my mom would say jagalskad...but i love my mom so i agreee.... This past weekend our kids got back score sheets ripping them apart on like diction and communication in the ballad, and from my understanding the judges didn't understand that our kids were singing in italian... so to all of you guys planning on attending in a few weeks, just to let you know, you shouldn't be able to understand what they are saying unless you can speak italian... lol i found it funny.

You are kidding me...that is funny!

I guess I just feel like it's not really States without all the groups there...how I long for the days when we had 25 groups in that sweet Beckley auditorium....

they probably wouldn't be coming anyway.
