You can achieve a big controlled sound. I think a small sound throughout a whole show is a flaw. You should be able to sound like a different choir with every different song. Since different songs require different interpretations. But thats just my opinion.

Now the guy if I remember, wasn't too tall, on the skinnier side, and it may have been the closer where the girls are dancing in the front and the guys are in the back. He's close to the center when he did the move. The way I can describe the move is the same move Martin Lawrence does in Big Momma's house on the previews as Big Momma. Kind of a bust and and thrust with a squat and they move to the right a little. All the guys are doing it. But he was going hog wild. That's why he got the award.

The CUTEST performer ever will have to be that cute small girl from Eastlake (I think she could have been asain, I couldn't see her face though, my binoculars were almost broken.) YOU'RE ADORABLE! She was also an EXCELLENT dancer.

Of the four Aztec Sings I've been to, Friday night's was definitely the best. In particular, it was great to see musical theater and classic standards so in evidence. Sure, there was plenty of decidedly un-choral contemporary pop to go around, but perhaps there's a shift in trend occuring. Also, much improved this year was the quality of soloists. Each seemed prepared and comfortable with the microphone.
Some thoughts: Without exaggeration, if the rest of their show was at the level of their first two numbers, Carlsbad Sound Express would be as good as any group in the country. Vocally and visually exciting, and most importantly - appropriately staged and sung (particularly the character voices on the second number) - "Big Time" and "Chicago, Illinois" were outstanding. I usually find Damon Brown's choreography way too busy, but here he was right on the mark. My placing: 2nd, Showmanship

The fact that a choir can perform an incomplete show -- opening with their ballad, no less -- and win a show award highlights the folly that is calling Aztec Sing a show choir competition. Nevertheless, it's clear that another outstanding year is in store for John Burroughs. The Powerhouse sound is as lush as ever; appropriate to the literature (why, oh why do judges overlook that?), yet still full, rich and choral. Clearly another outstanding year is in store for Powerhouse. The rest of the country better be prepared to face not only the top choir in Southern California, but one of the top 5 anywhere. My placing: 1st, Musicianship

Oh how I wish Arcadia would open with their second number. It may well be the most effective number I've seen from Chanteurs, and would be an arresting start to their perfomance. Fine singing and stage presence, a choir this good deserves to sink its teeth into better material. My placing: 4th

I'm not a fan of rock music for choir - even that of the great Elvis Presley - but the El Rancho Choraleers did it well, regardless. While solid across the board, a more cohesive song selection might improve the show overall. "Till We Reach That Day" is beautifully performed, but comes a little too much out of nowhere. Additionally, less choreography and just simple staging could make that number more effective. My placing: 3rd

Glendora Royal Stewarts continues to make great strides from year to year, and could become a real contender. More Cole, please! Note to Rent soloist: It's a terrific song, and you have a terrific voice. Now relax. Let the lyrics and voice do the work. My placing: 5th

Congratulations to new director Patty Breitag and Diamond Bar. I always suspected Marquis could really sing and indeed they did Friday night. A third less personnel and twice the sound. Great job.
Brea Olinda's show was beautifully staged, and choreographed with appropriate restraint. "As If We Never Said Goodbye" and "Masquerade" were not only welcome relief from the frenzy of the constant movement of most other shows, but great examples of what else show choir performances can be. Bravo! The high-brow and tongue-in-cheek harpsichord stylings during Brittany Spear's "Toxic" and the clever slow-motion transition to "Chariots of Fire" were terrific.
Finally, BIG kudos to the Eastlake Center Stage, which proves that you don't need numbers for show choir. Top to bottom, your show was complete, making me think of a Mini Mt.Zion. And at a fraction of the size of other goups, your sound was often just as big. Congratulations.
Aztec was really amazing. This year, I really sat down and watched every single group (except for brea because i was in the warmup room). There is something in each choir that is so wonderful to recieve when watching them. Excellent job to EVERYONE!
