Tyler's winning solo from the solo competition was terrific. I do not think I would be out of line to say he has a future in Broadway if that is his wish. Great job.

The femal soloist winner (sorry I don't remember her name) was also outstanding. I did not recognize the song but she delivered it incredibly well with a good amount of emotion. What a way to start off finals!

Congrats to all of the groups. A VERY entertaining day!

I can't say I am positive but I believe that there is best soloist in a show and then theyhave a seperate solo competition and that may be where the confusion is coming from. That is my guess.

Correct. Tyler won the separate solo competition. JT did win for the show solo. So many awards my mind is melting.

Wrong. Best male soloist was Tyler Mann from Burroughs Powerhouse. He sang his winning song during finals.

Matt, the best female soloist was from Colerain, the one who sang "Why Haven't I Heard from You". The best male soloist was from Eisenhower named JT if I'm not mistaken

I was a TAD shocked that Burroughs didn't get best costumes, and that Clinton didn't get best crew (only because I don't really remember Piqua's crew really doing anything).

We were very surprised as well. We appreciated winning but i also think that Clinton's crew should have won.

Again as the lighting and sound designer for Crystal Classic, I can tell you that the only microphones that were adjusted in volume during a groups performance were the 4 wireless hand-held microphones, or a wired microphone if a soloist came up to it instead of a wireless mic. All of the other microphone levels remained consistent throughout the day.

Ok. Sounds good. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed the low volume levels.

Wow! What a competition. Congratulations to Fairfield for hosting THE BEST show choir competition I have ever attended.

First I want to start off by saying:
PIQUA!!!!! Oh my goodness, your show (other than Clinton's) had some of my favorite moments of the day! That opener was incredible. You guys performed it with so much energy and emotion. I wish you had a later performance spot so more people could have experienced your show. I was not expecting you guys to come out with such a strong performance in the morning like that. So when you did, it blew me away. The 2nd number is really cool, you have some outstanding individual performers who really sell your show. Way to go. You should be proud!

Clinton - I think someone made the comment earlier that Clinton does not have much conviction when they perform. That is absolutely not true! You could see the conviction in their faces: they wanted this bad. The energy exploding through their choreography and singing was incredible. I have never seen a choir perform as hard as they did. Their material may not be as original as John Burroughs, but they are so so so so so so polished, so passionate about putting on a good show, so incredibly talented, professional, and classy. Way to go Clinton. A well deserved win!

John Burroughs - WOW! What an incredible show. They put on a terrific vocal show in finals (it had much more umph than their prelims show). And the concept and costumes were so cool. Loved the ending, when "Alice" made it through the rabbit hole. I hope they come out to Ohio again! Having them here was unreal! It is so hard to compare Clinton and Burroughs, because they are both such masters of their own style - they both perform with so much energy, conviction, and passion. Such a treat to watch.

Center Grove - Their ballad was my favorite vocal moment of the night: so musical and beautiful .

Eisenhower - Very solid and energetic show. Lots of fun to watch!

Marysville - These kids performed so hard in finals. I've never seen Marysville perform with as much energy and emotion as these kids did on Saturday night. There was a certain spark to their finals show. Ballad was beautiful - the girls' tone in that number is fantastic.

Lawrence Central - very solid vocals throughout the whole show. Was cool seeing them onstage after watching them on MTV! haha

Conclusion: Every group that competed on Saturday was a champion. Every group should be so proud of being apart of such an amazing competition. Who knows when there will be another one like it!

Also a fun fact: Clinton had four 1st place rankings and one 2nd, Burroughs had one 1st, three 2nd's, and one 3rd! Center Grove also had one 2nd! Congrats to everyone!

Am I the only one who thought the groups up until Burroughs were extremely quiet? I'm not calling shenanigans (sp?) or anything, I'm just asking if anyone else made this observation.

Thank you. With a 25 member strong combo, its difficult not to over power the singers. It's weird to hear all season, judges say that we were not strong enough and then here we were too loud. I'm guessing mics.

I am the lighting and sound designer for the Crystal Classic. The only instrument in the arena that had a microphone on it was the baby grand piano, and it was a pick-up directly attached to the soundboard of the piano, so it would not be able to pick up any other instrument in the combo. It should also be noted that this microphone was only mixed into the on stage monitors and not the house PA system.

I loved every finals group. But what I loved most about Burroughs was that they're entire show told a story. I am so used to just seeing choirs perform songs that all relate. But Burroughs told the story of a nightmare and to me it was just something I have been wanting to see for a while now. But this was by far the best competition I have ever seen.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted it yet because there are so many pages to look through but has anyone heard of the point breakdown yet

I think the interesting thing about this weekend's competition is the emphasis on the final placements. The judges made their decisions, and, agreed or not, they will remain unchanged. The impact of the decision, however, is quite obvious due to the 46+ page comments. Imagining that a show choir competition would garner such heated debate speaks volumes as to how show choir impacts us all. It has been stated in numerous blogs how if the audience were entertained, then the choir accomplished what it set out to do. Although it may seem trivial to those of us who are not the performers whether a choir placed "grand champion" or "first runner-up", it may indeed be an important issue to the kids. Some day they will understand that placement is not as important as the impact of their performance. As our Powerhouse kids step off that plane in L.A., I hope that they will peruse this site to see how their performance affected show choir history in a way unimaginable. As was mentioned several pages ago, when someone sings their set songs or asks repeatedly about the songs, and comments on the "artistry" and entertainment value of their set then Powerhouse truly is a winner. After all, a memorable set performed with passion, conviction and purpose is what it's all about.

So this is the first time I've actually been able to sit down and give my thoughts. I had a little tire problem saturday morning that I finally took care of today. Long story short I left my car on I-70 west for show choir!! Lol. Anyway this was the best competition I've been to in a few years. Such a wide variety of performers that all did their own thing so well!! Alright I have a bunch of groups that I wanna say my two cents about. Gonna try not to be too critical lol.

Clinton- Obviously the cleanest group of the day/night. The group was definitely better vocally, to me at least, this year then the last time I saw them live. I really enjoyed the show though!! The only problem I had was after the ballad where it was suddenly country themed. I didn't get how it related to the theme. But that could be cause I didn't know what the songs were. The closer was freaking awesome!! The instrumental group worked so well with the choir that it made that closer near perfection. Congratulations on a well deserved grand champion!!

John Burroughs- WOW WOW WOW!!! absolutely my favorite show I've ever seen. Your vocals were just incredible in every song of your show!! It did not get the ending till the finals show about a minute after you guys walked off stage. But once I did I was like that's so cool!! I would have never thought of that!! I felt very privelaged to see such an artistic show and I'm normally a fan of the norm show choir. I actually thought that you guys could have placed over Clinton or 1st rup. But either way it would/should have been close. Congrats and I REALLY hope I get to see you guys perform again!! PS I think his name is Tyler? well anyway prob the best male soloist I've heard all years hands down!!

Center Grove- I missed you guys but I know your ballad is great. I'm just not a fan of of your guys show. You're great though!! And congrats on 2nd rup!!

Eisenhower- I thought you guys were pretty good. I thought the first two numbers and the post ballad number started too slow so I couldn't really get wrapped up in your show. But I did really like your ballad and your closer was really energetic. Very impressive group. Congrats to you as well.

Marysville- First off congrats on making it into finals. You guys have been working so hard for this competiton. I know it was really tough and I could tell that you all really appreciated getting a finals slot!! Now I defintely thought your finals performance was much better than the day time performance. There was much more energy throughout the whole show and the diction that you guys needed was much more apparent. That being said you can't let your energy overtake your pitch. There were a few pitch problems that I do believe are a result of over excitement. So keep the energy just watch your pitches. I thought you guys should have placed over Eisenhower and I'm not just saying that because I'm an alumni. I'm so proud of you guys for doing all of us Marysville alumni proud and representing Marysville in this awese competition!!!

Lawrence Central- Im not a big fan of your show but it is enjoyable. The second number with the whole little Richard thing was really entertaining and the soloist is such an awesome performer!!! My one thought, and this may have been because of the microphone levels, is that the soloists kind of make the closer hard to pay attention to. I think the soloists are great but the group as a whole are good enough to sing that you could prob have groups within the group just sing what the soloists sang. But I think the soloists could still work if they weren't so piercing. Great job guys!!!

Colerain- now when you first walked out on stage and did the a Capella section I was like whoa they are good!! But as soon as the band kicked in I could not understand a word that was said. You guys gotta remember that when your in a setting like the arena you have to use that diction and project more. Now this could have also been because a mic problem and if it was then ignore that lol. I thought you guys put on a great show. I love journey and I love the free willy song you guys did!!! The soloist was terrific!!! Great performance you guys

Piqua- I unfortunately didn't get to see you guys perform because of my tire incident. But as soon as I walked in the school's doors I heard the peak of your ballad and was like whoa that sounded awesome. I heard great things about your show from all my marysville friends and the marysville spectators. So i was really suprised that you guys did not make finals. I only saw you guys at your invitational and thought you guys were some kind of awesome!! Anyway congrats on an awesome season and like everyone else said don't let this one competition get you down!!

Fairfield Rhythm Express- you guys are always such an awesome middle school group. Any of the middle school groups there could have easily learned something that they could take away to improve their own performances. I loved We Dance!! it took me down memory lane to my freshman year when we did it for show choir. And boogie wonderland was such a great closer for you guys!! And your soloists were sp freaking awesome just imagine when you guys are I. High school how awesome you guys will be!!

Fairfield Choraliers- this was my favorite Fairfield show since 2008(mainly cause I missed last years show). You guys had some awesome vocals even at your home competition!! I love the ballad as well!! If someone could get me the name of it i'd love that!! The second half was my favorite part. The guys and girls numbers were so awesome and I enjoyed them even more cause I actually knew the songs. That guitarist for black magic woman was freaking awesome and the song that I really only know from Hocus Pocus for the girls number was really cool as well. The set was very well put together and made the second half that much better. I'd love to know what the title of the closer was cause that was freaking sweet!!! Just tighten up the choreo and you guys will be set for nationals!!!

This was a very well put together competition. The food was great, the groups were great, and the music in between groups was okay. Lots of bass and fireflies was overplayed. I used to really like that song till Saturday lol. But I hope to come back to the crystal classic next year. Definitely looking forward to it!!! Congrats to every group that poured their heartand soul out there including Edgewood mini ware house and the Burroughs womens group!!

Just curious and would not mind some feedback with so many SCC memers in attendance. . .

What did you think of our Middle School group Rhythm Express? This is the biggest crowd they get to perform in front of each year and with the addition of the live feed, just that many more potential critics.

I was very impressed with them! and so was my mom, she was watching the feed too. The sound was equivalent to a lot of high school choirs, just maybe a little lacking in basses, but that's expected in young voices. and the soloists! they sounded so mature vocally!
In my middle school we only had one or two confident soloists.. they didn't dance either, only step-touches and horrible clapping. Maybe some hand movement sometimes.I'm kind of jealous of the middle school show choir programs that ohio has. If only indy had middle school show choirs... hmm..
