All the groups attending are excellent. After seeing WSD, I thought that you guys were AMAZING. I can't wait to see you again at Benton. Other than that, it will the my first time seeing many of the shows. Good luck to everyone.

A lot of Prairie people?

I'm mostly interested to see how Cedar Rapids Jefferson will do- they used to NEVER be very ready early in the season, and it sounds like they were this year, which is awesome.

This has to be false... The last time Clinton and Jefferson competed against each other before 2004 was 1997 at Showstoppers Nashville.... 2 years before Reese even started teaching at Jefferson... There would be no reason for Fehr to hate Reese. But people at Jefferson that year would make up a rumor like that....

Anyways, I think this is why Clinton came to Benton that year...

If you look at where Clinton competed that year, 2 competitions stick out because Clinton did not usually atten them- Benton and North Central. At North Central there were 3 Indiana groups that had risen to become 3 of the strongest show choirs in the state- Lawrence Central (a huge force in Indiana since the mid-90s), Lafayette Jefferson (who of course was the last show choir to win a GC over Clinton also a HUGE tradition), and Huntington North (who went on to win 4 GC's in 2004 and had won North Central the year before... a newer program but one just as strong). What a great representation of Indiana- typically the strongest show choir state in the country and the competition was in Indianapolis, the strongest show choir city in the country...

The groups that competed at Benton that year were the 3 Cedar Rapids schools, 3 immensely strong programs with very rich traditions. Kennedy had just come off of their Branson Cup win in 2003. Jefferson had always had a strong tradition of winning, and were the last group west of the Mississippi to take a caption or award away from Clinton (Best Choreography and Co-Grand Champions Showstoppers 1997). Washington had just competed at Show Choir Nationals the year before where Attache was the host group and won Best Vocals over a tough competition. Cedar Rapids had grown to become the 2nd best show choir city in the nation and as of 2003 these were the 3 groups who had the most tradition and the most consistent results (Linn-Mar had only won their first GC in 2002, but had been beaten by all three of these schools in 2002 and had just beaten Washington for the first time in 2003 and Prairie had not been a force since 2000). Benton was a competition where all the Cedar Rapids schools had gone before so since it was a smart competition to go to to face all of them.

Anyways... a long post maybe giving a good reason as to why Clinton came that year. (also a little show choir history lesson)

That's actually a fairly logical reason. And Jeff, too, was at the Indiana comp. I pretty much fell in love with it when I went to see my brothers compete. I'm COMPLETELY bummed that we're not going back this year. (we went last year, as well). But, like I said, I've absolutely no idea the true reason. I've just heard what I posted through the grape vine. I have a hard time believing that grown men have that much of a grudge against one another. Especially one who has birthed one of the most successful show choirs ever...and probably the most successful show choir ever. And the other whom I have the utmost respect for.

It's great to see that everyone that comments about this says it's their favorite competition. Everyone who runs a competition should go to Benton just to see how smoothly everything is handled. I can't imagine what they have to do to get it that perfect, but it's really appreciated.

Clinton competed at Benton in '04. Supposedly their director had something against Reese and wanted to beat Jefferson before Reese went back to school to get his master's. But you know how show choir drama goes. It's probably 100% fiction.

How lame.

What even happened to Mr. Reese getting his masters? He never did finish, did he?

That's really funny - and most certainly 100% fiction. I mean - why would Fehr care? Not to mention, both groups met up at a much bigger contest at North Central a month later (where Clinton won again) - so I can't imagine why Clinton would go to all the trouble in Feb. to beat Jefferson at some little contest in Iowa.

I always heard the reasoning was that Clinton was a relatively 'young' troupe that year, and was interested in attending a 'safe' competition for their first time out. And I also understood they had an all out disaster there, in that a whole rack of costumes were left in the warm up room or something to that effect - and they STILL won hands down.

Irony is - 'young' group or not, Clinton's closer that year (I Drove all night) has pretty much gone down in the annuls of show choirs as one of the best closing numbers ever. I saw them at N. Central - and admittedly, was darned impressed (even if I didn't think they should have won best vocals)...
