agreed! and it seems that most groups/people aren't appreciative to be competing against the good choirs, until they beat them. whats fun going to a 'shoe in' competition?

Holy hairdos Batman...we really stirred things up with that post didn't we????
Mr. Temple is absolutely right of course..but Urbandale has been the choir to beat for some time..and that makes it mean more when you are fortunate enough to finish ahead of them anytime. What sense would it make to say we had a rivalry with a choir that was never in contention??? Rivalries are one of the fun things about any competitive activity..whether it's sports or Show Choir. I am sure most choirs have another school where it means a little extra if they are able to be successful when they meet.
I am sure that if Johnston beats Ankeny this week as "predicted" above the win will mean a little more to them than if VA was not at the competition.
So..again..I hope they have a regular "murderer's row" of 4A schools again next year and that we
"figuratively" do beat each other to a pulp (so to speak). That should make for an awesome competition..and may the choir that performs the best that day take home the spoils. ave, Caesar, morituri te salutamus!

I've had conversations with Mr. Dean about this very subject. We of course support and promote excellence no matter who puts it up there on the stage. We share our show information very early on with one another. We honestly tell each other how our show prep is going. We share information about rehearsal techniques, arrangements, and stuff like that.

We want to be friends with every group....but at the same time when we are on that stage performing and competing we want to beat every group. It doesn't mean we dislike each other or that we can't sit down in the cafeteria after our performance and eat a meal together. I don't see the problem with being competitive. We all compete to win.

So...all you Ankeny kids that I haven't met yet...find me on Saturday when you aren't busy preparing to perform and say hi. If you don't know who I am ask Nikola or one of the Hodnes to point me out. I guess that goes for any of the other SCC regulars. If you're at Urbandale on Saturday seek me out and say hi. I really want to meet people from here in person so I know who I'm chatting with.

When I read this I just didn’t agree with it right off the bat.

I think that the past years of Visual Adrenaline and the future years will have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Urbandale’s show choirs. I think that by using the words “intense rivalry” it sets up an image in my head of two groups beating each other to a bloody pulp. Maybe this doesn’t matter to people or they just look right over it but I wanted to address this issue.

I think that the rivalry stuff is over done. I think that people blow it way out of proportion. I know that we love Urbandale, our directors are great friends, and we (V.A) have a bunch of friends in Studio.

Naturally when two groups go to the same competition and their only 20 min away, they’re both going to want to win. No matter how good of friends they are, they’ll both want to do well, that does not mean that both wish each other bad luck or anything to that extent.

Maybe I’m just looking at this too much. I think that people will say what they. That’s the not point. I know that Urbandale knows that we love and respect them I just don’t want it to see like we have this BIG huge thing against them.

So not true.

I'm pretty sure that "rivalry" does not equal hatred or bad feelings. It simply means, a competitor. And to state that Urbandale and Ankeny are big competition to each other and that they compete often is a true statement. But it's ok, wouldn't want anyone to take something the wrong way... dry.gif

I have been going to the Urby Competition for about 8 years. 2007 has the LEAST "BUZZ" of any year I can remember. I think there was more excitement during the snow out/reschedule years. Undoubtedly the absence of some of the past "regulars" is a part of it. Even though Urby is probably Ankeny's most intense rivalry we want their events to continue to be considered among the best. Hopefully next year some folks will decide to return.

...and only Johnston on a rather crappy VHS tape from Linn-Mar (their first contest). But I will say this much - that is the best I've seen Innovation since 2002 easy - I was insanely proud

I've only seen Johnston for the past few years, and its my favorite, and like i've stated, one of my favorite shows of the year so far. It was WONDERFUL. I expect them to do very well.

I haven't seen Ankeny, and only Johnston on a rather crappy VHS tape from Linn-Mar (their first contest). But I will say this much - that is the best I've seen Innovation since 2002 easy - I was insanely proud (and I know chunks of that is due to a certain director who's been training some of these kids the past few years )

This will be my 12th Urbandale Jamboree to attend. I saw 1989-1997, 2004, 2006-2007 - only missing those years when I was in show choir exile in Texas, or had an opera conflict (hey - gotta make some money somehow!) - so no matter what happens, I'm just thrilled to be there.

Even though 'some of the regulars' won't be there this weekend - it's still going to be a great day, and I'm anxious to see Ankeny and the other groups. Best of luck to everyone!

Let's get some buzz going? I think Johnston can take Ankeny!

" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
At first I thought you were serrious and then saw you were a director.

I am most excited to see results on Saturday. I might be going help clean and watch Celebration on friday to try and get them ready and more energy. Very excited to do so.

i think Mr. Temple said something about Urbandale's competition starting in the early 80's. if so, what a long time for Johnston to be going.... it's almost like Buffalo Grove and Onalaska!

I would not count out Johnston's Prep group Synergy this year. They have a fantastic show this year and have been known to make finals at past competitions.

And so has Ankeny and so has Celebration.

Another good article in the Des Moines Register. I have to say, they are doing some rather consistant work in regards to stuff about show choir - I'm a bit impressed actually!

Looking forward to this weekend - finally get to see a contest LIVE this season...

ok after this weekend I could see things going like this:

GC: Ankeny
1RU: Johnston
2RU: Iowa City High
3RU: Ankeny (prep)
4RU: Grand Island Senior
5RU: Cedar Rapids Washington (prep)

as much as I would love to see Celebration go into finals, and see TWO prep groups in finals... i personally have a feeling it won't.
But I'll pray for the best.
