No love for Petal? I feel like we have a bunch of South Jones fans on this board...

Thanks for clearing that up Mrs. Miller!
I can tell North Forest has been working really hard. There was so much improvement since the NFI. I had a really good time watching you guys perform.

The ranking system that was used at our competition is a computer-based system that has nothing to do with scores, instead it is based on how the judges think the groups should be placed... It doesn't make much sense to me and personally I'm not a fan at all... If you're gonna do that then why do scores, and vice versa...

However, with that being said, I believe that the Ranking System results were the correct ones... South Jones really turned it up in Finals, and Petal Girls and JA did really well as compared to NE Jones and Petal mixed, who I think did better in Prelims... Just a short kid's point of view, and I apologize to the girl from Northeast Jones... You were right, GH did get 3rd based on scores... But due to this complicated Ranking System, they placed 5th... Sorry for the confusion...

no prob.. wow you got me fired up..lol but anways yeah i think South should have won in prelims they was AMAZING!!!!!!!

This is the first year my daughter has been associated with show choir. I have attended every competition that NEJ Special Edition has been in. I am extremely impressed with each and every group...each one is so unique and a joy to watch! West Jones was our last this season but I wish everyone the best of luck for the rest of their competitions. I can't wait to see ya'll again next year.

I am the show choir director from North Forrest High School. Yes, it is true that we only had 19 on stage. When we entered the competition we had more students. As a choir we decided we would stay in this division throughout the season.

When we finished performing, I was approached by the director from West Jones Middle and she asked if I wanted to be judged in the small division, since we only had 19 on stage. I thought quickly and responded that we entered the competition in the middle division and we would remain in the middle division. We had set our goals for the year as a group.

I also thought about how I would feel as a director of a small group (Because I have been there) if someone dropped down and hurt my choir's chances. I didn't want to upset the small division with confusion. I have an unbelieveable respect for all of the choirs and their directors and we all work extremely hard to achieve all that we put on stage. It was not the time or the place for a division change.

Results: North Forrest placed 3rd in our middle division and I could not be more proud. They put their best show on stage and that's all I can ask of them.

I heard that they only had 17 onstage. I didn't see them so I can't confirm this. Anyone from North Forest wanna step in and help us out? lol

Yeah I can see exactly why they would compete in our division and I have no problem with it, but I thought it should have been announced beforehand. Also, didn't North Forest have less than 20, but they still were judged with the Middle Division...correct me if I'm wrong on that.

But you guys really deserved GC! Ya'll were AMAZING.

And I wanna thank West Jones. The competition went extremely smooth and it was a really enjoyable day! The space was limited, but somehow they made it work almost perfectly. Thank you for an amazing competition!

Oh yeah...and our hostess, Cassie, was AMAZING. I met her this summer at SCA and was thrilled when she told me she was our hostess. She really helped out tremendously, even helping us repair a backdrop for our girl's group. I hope she can be our hostess next year too.

Thanks lol...and i dont know about North Forrest...but now that i think about it i think i did notice that they were missing a person or two in their formations but i might be thinking about someone else!!!

I haven't seen the score sheets but when they are announced 5th place that usually doesn't mean they got 3rd... They very well may have tied, but they DID NOT get out right 3rd place... That would belong to the Women's group that beat your women's group... Common sense my dear... Me and a few thousand other people there last night heard GH called out as 4th Runner-up... I was told that they were in 3rd place GOING INTO FINALS, but they placed 5th behind JA and Petal girls IN FINALS... Just drop it... GH didn't get 3rd... That's all there is to it...

is that why Petal people said it was stupid that they didnt go by scores to? trust me i will show you a score sheet..

Are you kidding me? I thought ya'll did AMAZING! I was totally entertained throughout your show! You were the only show choir [originally] in our division that I saw and I thought you guys did incredible!

Right now I can't think of any advice on the show choir director thing, but tell her that everyone from Wayne County thinks yall did amazing and we really hope to see you again next year!

Well thanks!!!! I tried one more time today after school and she said she will most likely have one thanks to my comments to her saying she is nice..........I also told her that next year if someone doesnt have their fees paid on time they get kicked out....plain and simple.

Right, that's the concept I was driving at. Like you said, it essentially works the same way. Anyone know which other Southern competitions use the straight ranking system in finals?

(I assume that the 1st place vote-getter gets 5 points toward their ranking score, 2nd place vote-getter gets 4 points, and so on)

Actually, I think that they average the rankings themselves and the "lowest scoring" group places the highest.

Ex.

1st Place - Group A: 1 2 1 1 = 1.25
2nd Place - Groub B: 2 1 2 2 = 1.75

...etc.

Either way, it's the same idea.

It would be nice to see some variation of finals scoring that includes both ranked and scored portions come to life.

But, with that said, I've always liked the concept of scoring in prelims, then ranking in finals.

Chris is absolutely right on this. when you score, it makes it possible for one judge to throw the results (whether it be intentionally or unintentionally), because the scoring scales are so raw. With ranking you get a straight 1-5 ranking (I assume that the 1st place vote-getter gets 5 points toward their ranking score, 2nd place vote-getter gets 4 points, and so on), which really usually tends to be more accurate.

Think about it this way. In prelims, judges don't get to keep all their score sheets for the day, and then score every group. They score the group, and turn that sheet in to the people in charge of tabulation before the next group performs. Then, they score the next group, and turn that scoresheet in. They have no record of the scores they've given to previous groups, so even if they thought Group A was better than Group B, that's not always necessarily reflected on paper.

Ranking systems in finals are used as a way to ensure that one judge's scores don't singularly influence the competition one way or another, which very often happens. In some cases, the rankings come directly from the scores (ie. with the first judge, Group A scores a 98 and Group B scores a 92, so Group A is ranked 1 and Group B is ranked 2 - from that particular judge). Other times, the judges don't "score" the groups at all but directly rank each group from 1-5.

Either way, it's much harder for one judge to sway the competition on a scale of 1-5 than it is on a scale of 1-100 or 1-200.

Another common element of the ranking system is that if one group has a majority of the 1st place rankings, they will automatically win.

sweetheart.. gold horizons did get 3rd in finals look at the scores.. scores say it all

GH got third in scores in finals however the judges were using the ranking system. In the ranking system as i remember GH got two votes for 5 two for 4 and one for 3 they ended up taking 5th. The scoring system I thought would be more fair but they used the ranking system(south was 1st all the way down) This is my first year in show choir and I don't know much but I'm learning I do however favor the scoring system. The results shouldn't be based on the just the judges predictions it should be based on the actual score they recieved.....

Finals Results:

GC: South Jones "Company" (Vocals, Choreography)
1st RU: Petal "Soundsations" (Overall Effect, Costumes)
2nd RU: Petal "Innovations"
3rd RU: Jackson Academy "Encore"
4th RU: Northeast Jones "Gold Horizons"

My first thing to say about this competition: WOW... It doesn't get much better than that... Two old Show Choir rivals only about 15 minutes away from one another duking it out for 1st Place... I would have gone crazy if I were a judge trying to decide between "the" Petal Soundsations and "the" South Jones Company...

South Jones: I didn't think you guys could surpass your incredible Prelims performance, but you did by far... I wasn't sure if I was watching South Jones or an old Clinton performance in Finals... This is probably the best South Jones since 2005....

Petal mixed: Holy crap they're good... I was ten times more impressed with your Prelims performance than I was with both Opelika performances... In Finals they were amazing last night, but not quite as good as South Jones... Bethany Fagan gives me chills everytime I hear her sing, and so does the male soloist in their ballad...

Petal girls: Great job... One of the best Women's groups I've ever seen... You girls deserved your placing...

Jackson Academy: This was the first time I saw you guys live, and I was very impressed... They will be a HUGE force to be reckoned with in the future...

Northeast Jones: They have improved a lot since Homewood... I loved the added solo in Music and the Mirror... I though that GH could have gotten 3rd had they matched their Prelims performance...

I apologize for the less than great facilities, (minus the massive auditorium) but it was the best we could do for now... I hope all of the groups, especially Petal and JA, come back next year when we will FINALLY be able to have it in our new auditorium on our school's campus... Thank you to all the groups for bearing with us... And great job to everyone... I can't wait to see all of you next year... Until next January, take care!
