Do you want the Midwest choirs to crash and burn because of lack of breathing time? I'm confused on why you want the judges to see that. In my eyes, 15 minutes of rough choreo is better than 2 minute spirts of energy through a 20 minute show.
Quite the opposite actually. I mean it is probably easier than what Twinsburg, Wheaton, and probably Burbank will be doing.
I absolutely LOVE Burroughs' concept and song choices. Amazing opener and closer although I think I realized for the first time that they had essentially 3 ballads.
1) the second song
2) the a cappela
3) the main girl's "I surrender"
The a cappela and second song had no choreo, and what choreo "I surrender" did have, it was slow moving. Also take in that they had maybe 4 dress changes. All of this = tons of breathing time! Seriously about 9 minutes of a 20 minute show were not doing hard choreo and I hope the judges see that the midwest choirs or Burbank might produce less sound because of that.

See to me it's sort of classical show choir but the way Burroughs does their show, it still seems theatrical and still unique to their own style. Like they updated the old style
Couldn't of said it any better. They're definitely a style of their own, and can either turn out to be a pro or a con. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
I think we will just have to agree to disagree. Further conversation doesn't seem to be too productive or of direct relevance to Xtravaganza so I will leave it where it is.
Agreed. Let's just say that the competition will be great, and may the best school (on that day) win!

I wish I could bake a cake full of rainbows and smiles and we could all just eat it and be happy.
I feel like North Shore should have had a show choir. It would make sense being in the Chicago area and all. Okay this is again too. I just can't handle myself today.
I wasn't offended as I have no connection to Burroughs, it actually seems like you might have been and I apologize if my post came off that way. I was just trying to provide context to your post. You were making judgments and defining Powerhouse based off of a YouTube video, when you still have to consider everything else (poor quality video, early in the season, show still evolving).
I wasn't saying your opinion is wrong, trust me, I understand what the purpose of a forum is. But part of a forum is also having a conversation. I was just saying I think your reaction was a bit harsh with all things considered. Saying you're disappointed by their show, because it "isn't what I'm used to from them" is fine because it's your opinion, but I don't really think it's a good enough reason from my perspective. Or from Powerhouse 2009's perspective where they said, "Who Made Up All The Rules?" Like Häakon basically said, I applaud Powerhouse for mixing it up. Why not throw in a more classical show in between more theatrical shows? It keeps things fresh and they are still gaining momentum.
By the differing opinion, no I was not offended. What was offensive was the presentation, claiming that I "must not know Burroughs very well." If I don't know what I am talking about, then I wouldn't reply in the first place. Yes, I am making my predictions according to what I have seen on YouTube, as most people's predictions are. You accuse me of making judgements, and yes I am. Judgements are made by what we see, and, well...
My opinion wasn't even harsh, as you say it is. I said that I am disappointed because there's no real reason this show stands out in my mind. Burroughs ALWAYS gives me a reason to remember them, and from my perspective, I have not seen it. If that isn't a good reason from your perspective, then I am TRULY sorry. I, too, give props for trying something new, but that doesn't mean we all have to like it. As far as the Midwest comment goes, I was just making a note of it, not saying that it plays into why I didn't like it.

I find it humorous that after years of being told what they do is "too theatrical for show choir," Burroughs decides to do a tap number and suddenly they're "too midwest." Gotta love it.
So true! I'd even say they beat the Midwest Choir's at their own game! (Findlay...) But anywho... They surprised me very much at how they could do such a quick, snappy tap number and not speed up!
Well, as I quite obviously stated in my post, performances are different live than they are on YouTube. I do, in fact, know Burroughs and have been following them since 2005, thank you very much. It seems that I have offended you for some reason, when I was clearly stating an opinion, partnered with a fact (that they are very different this year). I'm not writing them off, just stating that IN MY OPINION they are missing a step compared to the past few years.

LOL that was directed at the show as a whole, not just the opener.
You must not know Burroughs very well then. The poor quality video you saw was just the beginning of their show which is still very much evolving. Burroughs always has something additional up their sleeve. In 2010, they swapped out a song, 2011 with Firework they literally had fireworks, and last year they had an explosion and cool dress lighting effects. The video you saw isn't all that Burroughs has so I wouldn't be so quick to write them off as "lacking." Their theme, in my opinion, this year is really deep and truly fresh for show choir, especially when it seems the majority of show choirs think they have to go "dark" to tell a story or put on an entertaining show.

Just wanted to give a heads up to big choirs who are competing at Los al for the 1st time . Los al has a very small side stage so just be wise about where you place your costume changes. Oh and if you get a chance to try the Volcano Burger joint across the street than go for it. One of the best Burger joints I've ever eaten at.
I know this has already been stated, but I think the lack of finals will make a difference for the Midwest and southern groups. A lot of southern groups count on finals to get their stuff together (not bashing anyone cause my group does it when we make finals) it really gives a chance to find a way to adjust to the judges and get fired up based off of the prelim score. Not that anyone won't be fired up for this one. But the adjusting to the stage and judges does help.
Also a final random thought: the distance these groups are traveling might have an affect on their performance. There is a pretty significant time change (about 3 hours from Central time) along with the exhaustion from travel.
It's 2 hours sorry I went to Hawaii for spring Break and it was 4 hours so I assumed it was just one less hour.

So, I just checked out John Burroughs on YouTube. They were good, but it is NOT what we usually get out of them. Personally, it was a tad disappointing. It felt very Midwest and classical, which just isn't what I'm used to from them.
