Nicholas J. Oswald, a native of Dubuque, is thrilled to join the Muscatine High School Music Department as one of the new Directors of Vocal Music. His own high school choir experiences were the driving force behind where he is today. A valedictorian of Dubuque Senior High School’s class of 1999, Mr. Oswald was very active in choral activities during high school. He was the Vice-President of Concert Choir, a two-year member of the Iowa All-State Choir, Outstanding Performer of IHSMA’s Solo & Ensemble Contest, and featured soloist at the 50th Annual Tri-II Festival.
In May of 2004, Mr. Oswald graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Northern Iowa, receiving his BM in Vocal Music Education. While at UNI, he was a member of Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers. In March of 2003, Mr. Oswald had the opportunity to tour Austria and Rome with Concert Chorale. He also had the wonderful experience of studying abroad in England at the University of Hull in the fall of 2000. During college, Mr. Oswald served as Chancel Choir Director of Ascension Lutheran Church in Waterloo from September of 2002 to December of 2003. Mr. Oswald studied voice with Dr. Jean McDonald and conducting with Dr. Brad Barrett. As a collegiate vocalist, he was a three-time finalist at National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competitions.
Mr. Oswald has been performing since the age of 12. Since then, he has been featured in almost two dozen plays, musicals, and operas. Some of his favorite roles have included the title roles in “Lil’ Abner†and “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown,†Linus in “Snoopy! – The Musical,†and Roger in “Grease.†Mr. Oswald has also been a featured performer in the “Soda ‘n’ Sounds†show at Adventureland Theme Park in Des Moines during the summer of 2003 and in the “Stax of Trax†show at Worlds of Fun Theme Park in Kansas City during the summer of 2004.
Mr. Oswald is a member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Iowa Choral Directors Association (ICDA), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), and Iowa Music Educators Association (IMEA). In the community, he plans to sing with the Muscatine Civic Chorale and teach private voice lessons during the summer.
