I just don't know why, in this case, the raw scores were not used as the tiebreaker.
I understand the majority rule was made to limit the influential ability of a single judge, but if you're really going by "majority" then why ignore the fact that the MAJORITY (3/5) had Fairfield in front of Franklin Central? I understand that FAME can't just revoke the 2nd place from FC, but Fairfield should get some sort of placement change. Just my opinion.

Ignore the thumb down Corbin, my thumb is too large to press this little button

I heard that fairfield may not be going to fame nationals. Is that confirmed?!

I realize, for obvious reasons, that I am biased, but I'm just don't want what could be my final competition to have such a frustrating and confusing outcome as this one.

The score is how rankings are determined. Judges don't just assign positions (i.e. I put this choir first, this one second etc). Instead, the judges score the choirs as usual and the tabulators determine the rankings per individual judge based on those raw scores.

Since captions are based on prelims, why is there a raw score in finals? Obviously it doesn't mean anything. You would think it would be there to settle a tie or something of that magnitude...

I think what they used to put FC over Fairfield is either because FC had a caption or the judge that had FC in first had Fairfield in third either way im not entirely sure. Obviously this was really close and could have gone with any of the top 3 switched.

No... They weren't enforced. If so we wouldn't have been in first in prelims

I know there were also questions about time penalties being enforced or not, according to FAME's rules. Don't know if this figured into anything, but could've had something to do with things. Honestly unsure if enforcement happened, though I know the rules they have. It was a brutally tough and incredibly close competition with a lot of groups that are all championship level.

The way that FAME has apparently interpreted the consensus rule is strictly based on numbers on a page, NOT comparison to other groups in question/or a true breakout of rankings between group A and group B. Below are the ranks for Fairfield and FC.

Fairfield - 1,2,3,3,3
FC - 1,2,2,3,4

The earlier post regarding ordinal totals and raw scores was correct. Fairfield and FC were tied in ordinal score with 12. Not that it matters to the consensus method, but we were also ahead in overall raw score. Our choreography and vocal scores were also both higher.

If you look at it this way, you could assume that because FC had more 2s than we did and they should be in second. That is my assumption of how FAME made the determination and split the tie, but upon a closer look...

Judges Rankings in Finals: (1st- 4th place)
Layman - Fairfield, Franklin Central, Los Al, Carroll
Jasperse - Los Al, Fairfield, Franklin Central, Carroll
Myers - Los Al, Franklin Central, Fairfield, Carroll
DeMott - Franklin Central, Los Al, Fairfield, Carroll
Shew - Los Al, Carroll, Fairfield, Franklin Central

If you look at the above placements, 3 of the 5 judges had us (Fairfield) ahead of FC, those judges being Layman, Jasperse and Shew. Regardless of what the actual number of the placement was, that is the majority (which we thought would be the consensus).

We are still investigating this with FAME and hoping for clarification.

Three of the five judges in finals had Fairfield ranked above Franklin Central as well. It is a very puzzling rule...

Does this mean that Franklin Central won't be attending the National finals? (which is totally understandable given scheduling conflicts...just curious)

Also a student posted previously that Los Al probably wouldn't attend the National finals due to this being their out of state trip. Anyone know if that is that still true?

Pretty sure that's when FC Singers are defending their state concert choir championship.

Though I could be mistaken, I think FAME works a bit like show choir Nationals in that the group with more votes in a particular position gets that spot (majority ordinals). In other words, if a group got 1st, 1st, 6th from three judges, and another group got 1st, 2nd, 4th, the first group would win, even though they might have fewer raw score points and lose 8 to 7 in sum total ranking. They would have won the majority ordinals because 2 of 3 judges had them in first. Pretty sure this is how both competitions work and how it turned out that way. It's a great question, and certainly can be puzzling.

Member of SoundFX here and I can confirm that we probably won't go to Chicago. But our director is trying to find a way for us to make the trip over there. Hope to see some of you there!

Prelims placements:
1. Fairfield
2. Los Al
3. FC
4. Carroll

Finals placements (raw score in parenthesis):
1. Los Al (644)
2. FC (632.5)
3. Fairfield (635)
4. Carroll (?)
Finals placements were determined by rank. Los Al had a combined rank number of 8. Fairfield and FC both had a 12. Carroll had an 18.

I'm confused as to how Fairfield got third then if they had more points than FC and had the same rank. Isn't the second thing for rankings normally off of points? Just curious. But congrats to all groups
