I'm really proud to see 3 groups from Mississippi going to Nationals (and none of which are Clinton)! It really means a lot to us down in the south! Better yet, I had the chance to see all three perform live already this season. Go Jackson Prep, South Jones, and Oak Grove! Good luck in Chicago! =D

We understand we are going up against the top groups in the country and are happy with whatever placement we end up winning. QUOTE (Fame @ Feb 22 2012, 06:37 PM) *

Effective February 22, 2012, the following format changes will be standard protocol for each SCNCS qualifying event in Los Angeles, Orlando, New York, Chicago, Branson and the Show Choir National Finals in Chicago.

Girls groups: Up to two girls groups will be given the bid to the National Finals in Chicago based on placements at each of the Regional qualifying events in Los Angeles, Orlando, New York, Chicago, & Branson.

Mixed groups: The top three finishers at each Regional Qualifying event will receive a bid to the National Finals. Any mixed group placing top three in more than one Regional Event will receive only one bid to the National Finals. The group will still be judged in accordance with all other groups and WILL receive any earned placement trophies, but will NOT receive Finalists Medallions as these may be presented to the fourth place finisher.

Show Choir National Finals Format and Performance Order: The Show Choir National Finals will be a two day event beginning on Friday morning and concluding on Saturday evening with the crowing of a new National Champion and the presentation of the Show Choir Cup. Fridays semi-finals round will feature all National Finalists in a non-adjudicated/comments only performance round. There will be 3 performance sessions. All 3rd place qualifiers will perform in Session 3, all 2nd place qualifiers will perform in session 2, and all 1st place qualifiers will perform in session 1. Within each session, a random draw will determine performance order. Friday evening all competing directors will draw for a performance time in the National Finals on Saturday. In effort to maximize fairness, ALL QUALIFYING GROUPS will be mixed in together regardless of qualifying placement for Saturdays National Finals. Saturday is a single performance opportunity beginning with the girls National Finals in the morning and moving into the mixed National Finals immediately following the conclusion of the girls groups.

Awards: At the National Finals, placement awards WILL be awarded for the Grand Champion, 1st Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up for mixed show choirs, and Grand Champion, 1st-Runner-Up and 2nd Runner-Up for the girls division. In addition, caption awards WILL be given in the following categories (available to ALL groups): BEST VOCALS, BEST CHOREOGRAPHY, BEST INSTRUMENTAL COMBO, BEST DICTION, BEST MALE SOUND, BEST FEMALE SOUND, BEST SHOW DESIGN, BEST HORN SECTION, BEST RHYTHM SECTION, BEST COSTUMES, BEST MALE SOLO (individual), BEST FEMALE SOLO (individual), BEST MALE PERFORMER (individual), BEST FEMALE PERFORMER (individual), PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD, and the FAME AWARD.

Thank you for clarifying this!

This is a GREAT change on behalf of FAME in my opinion. Im glad to see they are listening and responsive to feedback from the show choir world. I for one think this really speaks volumes about them as a company. Now the interesting thing will be to see who and how many of these groups will attend. The potential is pretty incredible!!

This kind of goes against what the original idea of handing out awards. to give each group a little bit of something before they leave.

I agree. At least reward the runner-ups. It would make the awards more suspenseful!

...and a Saturday "Final Round" where only a champion will be crowned - there will be no runner-up awards, nor will there be best vocals or choreography captions.

Bands of America - a marching band organization that hosts a national championship every fall - tried this a few years ago; said "We're all winners" and only gave out the Grand National Championship trophy...

It lasted one year, and they never tried it again.

Some interesting changes to the format this year:

http://www.showchoirs.org/about.php

Some highlights:

There won't be a same-day prelims/finals, but rather a Friday "non-competitive preview round" where judges give critiques and a Saturday "Final Round" where only a champion will be crowned - there will be no runner-up awards, nor will there be best vocals or choreography captions.

I actually kinda like the two day format... while I do love going to the Midwest and seeing great groups perform twice, the "finals" concept never made much sense to me simply due to the fact that groups would perform mere hours (sometimes even less) after their first performance with virtually no time to properly make adjustments. This feels much more productive; it's more like a sound check and last chance to really fine tune things for the big day. And being able to go back to the hotel or whatever and spend a few hours tweaking the things that this particular set of judges wants to see gives everyone a more level playing field.

On the other side of the coin, FAME's reasoning for only giving out one trophy is that "as this is the National Finals, all participating show choirs are already considered finalists." What that has to do with not rewarding the best singing and dancing group of the day is beyond me. I think most people would still like to know at least that.

We're less than a month away now from the first qualifier... this one should be interesting!

Although I agree with you on the fact that it never made sense to me why there are finals when they really don't have time to make adjustments, if I've heard correctly... Knowing that groups are going to the Finals makes each group just incredibly pumped. It just make groups probably more energized and more spirited to go even stronger the next round. There's probably just something that makes it more intense knowing that you're going to the Finals. Also, students probably enjoy performing twice in one night! :D

IN MY OPINION: I think this is going to cost them in the long run. So there are no 1st runner up, 2nd runner up etc. trophies given out? In addition, no captions? Most schools are not going to like that-which will, in turn, be the end of the "true national champion." Schools will not spend the money to travel across country to attend if there isn't ample opportunity to place or grab a caption award. In addition, does that mean every other group is to assume they got 2nd??? I realize that points will be tallied and scores will be given out. But it sounds like Fame is just being cheap not to award a few more trophies to groups that have worked so hard and deserve a little recognition on a national level-especially if they qualified to attend in the first place...wow. Disappointing.

Perhaps a massive letter writing campaign is in order.
