Was there a solo competition? If so, what were the results?

This competition was very close and any group could have made it.
I enjoyed myself.

Totino, you guys are awesome! haha. It was so much fun cheering for you guys with Adam, Nick and Cam.

7 SCC'ers watching show choir, how awesome.
Nothing was as awesome as the lady knitting the whole day until her group, and then she left.

I realized I left out West from the shows and everything (trying to head to bed and getting out things quickly)
I loved the show. They had a slight advantage going before IC High because they did the same song. I loiked your version more! The vocals were awesome, and i personally don't see how you could have been behind Central (but I also didn't stay for finals). I LOVED Strongest Suit. Celebration did that 2 years ago and have always loved the song. Carley(Sp?) was a great soloist! And i loved the costumes. I can't wait to see a more solid product from west and central at Great River!

I had the day time scores, but alas, my notebook was taken by one of the West hooligans... I should be getting it back soon (or by then someone will post it).

The only thing I know is that Parkview ended up getting 8th and was behind Davenport Central by 1 point, and was 3 points away from making finals.
Hope everyone had a lot of fun at Milton! (Hope you enjoyed the Orange Julius' )" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

Oh, Milton.

They're certainly was some great shows. Waubonsie Valley had some powerful vocals and Totino had such an entergetic show. I'm still a little saddened by the whole "finals error". Davenport West was 6th in the day round, ahead of Central by 2 points. (behind in vocals, ahead in choreography) The error was made of Central being called, so Central was added to finals. After finals, West received 6th Runner Up, 1 point behind Central (ahead in vocals, behind in choreography). The group that actually made it into finals, went home without a trophy. It made for some mixed emotions. Sorry if it seems I may be "whining"... I just know that these kids worked very hard to end up with a lower placement and nothing to show for anything. How did this mistake happen in the first place? It clearly said on the score sheet that Iowa City High was in 5th and Davenport Central was in 7th.

Here are some of my thoughts on the shows...

Waubonsie Valley- Very powerful vocals! Make sure you are not straining your vocal chords at times. I think your show is a lot of fun, and that if you really work on cleaning up the choreography, you will be the new feared show choir of Illiniois.

Totino Grace- This show is really just a ball of fun. The choreography, set, costumes, and the last songs are really awesome. I really enjoyed "Who Loves You", it's great to see such a awesome choir perform it. I wasn't so sure about the "Snuff That Girl" song at first, but ultimately I ended up really enjoying it. You guys were wonderful!

Cedar Rapids Kennedy- Since seeing you in November you have definetally improved ten fold. Don't stop working though. Girls on "That's All", speak you parts louder... I can't understand what you are saying. The show could be even better if you would just work on the little things. Take for example the novelty, it's so funny and cool... but I would get distracted by sloppy choreography at times. Just continue to clean everything so your show is spotless and wonderful to watch!

Cedar Rapids Washington- I really enjoyed your show. The vocals were beautiful. The only part that was a bit of a downer was your ballad. It seemed lik-e everyone just stood there and sang like they didn't care, that resulted in the ballad sounding like something from a prep group. I didn't get to see you guys in finals, but from people I talked to they said that the ballad was gorgeous at night... keep it that way!!! Your show is a blast!

Iowa City High- I thought your day performance was DREADFUL. I thought the vocals were weak and the choreography was very messy... but I think the "finals error" really must have stirred something within because the night performance was completely different. It's so weird that West and City High has the same two songs right in a row "Save The Last Dance" and "Because You Believe". I perfer West's arrangements better (but I am certainly biased). I really enjoyed the opener in the night performance, I didn't in the day. The ballad had some beauitful vocal sounds, but make sure to use crescendos instead of just singing it at one level. It sounded so beautiful. The closer was a lot of fun, just make sure the energy doesn't die. I really enjoyed your show and I can see that there was improvement from the day performance and their must have been a lot of improvement from Linn Mar.

Davenport Central- The day show was very VERY sloppy. I felt that the show was just dry and all the same. I did enjoy the last half of "Who Loves You", it was a really cool arrangement. For having as many people as you do, I was really surprised at the lack of a maturity in the sound, something Central used to always have. Performing in finals, the first half of the show improved so much. The choreography was less sloppy and the vocals were more together and strong, but I still felt that the second half of the show just fizzled out. The small orchestra in the ballad was nice (in the day it sounded a bit pitchy, at night it was beautiful.) Keep cleaning that choreography!

Davenport West- You know what I think, it was all said in homeroom and warm ups yesterday. From day to night you really took the judges comments to use and performed a hell of a finals show. Don't worry about your placement. You did such a fabulous job. Mrs. Dunnegan is just beaming at times with how proud she is of all of you. Keep working now to face off at La Crosse Logan!

Milton's competition was certainly interesting! I had the day time scores, but alas, my notebook was taken by one of the West hooligans... I should be getting it back soon (or by then someone will post it).

To Waubonsie Valley, congrats...i've obviously never seen you (or heard of you) before, but your grop really brings the best you've got out on stage...not gonna lie, your first song was halarious for half our group because our concert choir did it this past fall (you were better). Congrats again and good luck to everywhere you go

I didn't see too many groups because of our busy schedule, but I did get to see IC "wth ave Jazz" and all I have to say is I love you guys. After watching your set, I was happy, especially with "Adolpho." Regardless of rankings, you are an entertaining group who can really captivate an audience.

Good job to Milton (and our awesome hosts)...competition was well run and there was food for all! ((this was a major plus; i didn't get dinner last weekend))

-Tom

Dwight Jordan choreographs them, and their director does their arrangements. Some of the best stuff I've heard all year. I think Illinois has it's new Mt. Zion, personally.

They made this competition worth coming to. There were some really shady "jipping" parts to this comp... however, all of the groups in finals gave very "finals worthy" performances.

You should have seen us all before they went on. We weren't expecting much and we just kind of sat back. Then when they started singing it was like we were blown away. They had some serious power coming from those voices and I wouldn't be surprised to see them grow and become more well-known in years to come.

Waubonsie Valley is in Aurora, Illinois (suburban Chicago).

http://wvhs.ipsd.org/index.asp

I believe they just started competing a couple years ago, but this is by far their biggest finish yet.

Can anyone else clue us in on choreographer, music choices etc? I'm very curious to know as well...

But it appears the "W" schools were the spoilers this weekend (Waubonsie Valley at Milton, Wheaton-Warrenville - another Chicago area school who did well at Mt. Zion, and Waukee - Iowa, who seemingly surprised some folks at the Johnston invite).

This is actually only their second year. And they came away from this competition with some good things. way to go "W"
you surprised us all

After a little research ... Waubonsie Valley High School is in Aurora, Illinois.

"WVHS has been recognized as having one of the premiere music programs in the United States, through recognition by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. WVHS was named a GRAMMY Association's Signature School in 2004, 2005, and 2006."

****ALSO!!!! There was a scoring error, and Iowa City will now be in finals as well. So there are now 7 finalists at Milton.

what kind of scoring error?

I got this email from my mom, relaying a story that my sister told her over the phone:

"She said when they announced finals, 4th Ave didn't get in. They were all sad and packing up to leave when some woman ran into their room and told them to stop packing. A while later someone else came and told them there had been a tabulation error and that 4th Ave. had actually placed 5th! What a roller coaster."

That's quite the catch...
