I don't think the ordinal strategy is unfair in any way; many competitions use scoring for daytime and then rankings without a points system for finals. Thank you for the clarification; the judging doesn't seem to slight any group.

the ranking system used was a joke. Carroll definitely deserved to make the night show.

Hi folks,

While I rarely post on this site, I'd like to offer a little clarity here, as the poster above lacks an understanding of the scoring system which was used on Saturday. Its use allowed the Lafayette Jeff judging panel to decide Saturday's outcome collectively, rather than allowing certain adjudicators to control it exclusively.

Saturday's outcome was not the "fault" of Lafayette Jeff's scoring system, as was stated by the Carroll director- rather, it was simply the result of the scoring system, which is well known and frequently utilized at show choir competitions. The conversion of raw scores to ordinals has been in place for years, and is preferred by many directors and competition hosts. This particular system limits the ability of a judge (or pair of judges, in this case) to control the outcome of a competition by issuing scores which are either overly inflated or deflated in comparison to the other adjudicators. As was the case on Saturday, the use of ordinals helps to keep a judging panel fair and consistent, and provides equal distribution of each adjudicator's impact on the final income.

Thanks to all the Lafayette Jeff folks for a great day which was filled with exceptional performances. With the caliber of groups in attendance, it must have been very difficult to judge this contest. We were honored to perform in the finals alongside such strong competition on Saturday night!

Interesting scoring system, where did you find that information?

I heard from my girl Courtney that they used rankings all day as well.

That's really a shame. I think it happens to every choir at least once every couple years though. So many different score sheets out there.

Let me correct this mis-information. The reason Carroll didn't make it into finals was not because of a very low band score. It was because there was a ranking system used.

So- both bands made up of professionals and bands made up of students were put in the same category and ranked according to their performance. Carroll's band did receive a lower ranking but their score was actually only 7 points from the top score. Carroll's overall raw score- including their band score was good enough to get them in the finals, but because of the use of this ranking system they were pulled out of finals.

This is no fault of the Carroll Band, but a fault of the tabulations system used.

yeah this is much more correct. my bad!

The reason why carroll didn't make finals was because at this competition, the score of the band gets factored into the overall score for the choir. carroll's band was scored very low, so it brought the choir out of finals :/

Per Lafayette Jefferson's director, the schedule which is posted on their website lists incorrect times for the women's division. Accurate performance times are as follows:

8:30 a.m. Anderson "Vocal Elegance"
9:00 a.m. Carroll "Select Sound"
9:30 a.m. Homestead "Elite"
10:00 a.m. Chesterton "Drifters"
10:30 a.m. DeKalb "Sound Sensation"
11:00 a.m. Brownsburg "Starlight Voices"
11:30 a.m. Jefferson "Expressions" (exhibition)

The performance times for mixed groups, as well as the evening competition, are accurate as listed in the above post.

We are looking forward to seeing many fine choirs tomorrow at Lafayette Jeff. Best wishes to all competing groups!
