I would just like to say... Yes they sing the snot out of "be italian" BUT... It was a poor choice by the director. That number is made for an adult show... I am very suprised that the parents of those girls have not said anything... As far as their performance... They blow it out of the park. It is not the kids' fault that they were given that so called choreo.... More like lap dances and chair strattling... I have blushed every time that I have seen it. I don't think that type of "dance" should be on a high school stage..........!!!!
Again.. For the choir... Good job dealing with whAt you were given. You are all very talented and it's sad that your talent is being "put out" there like that.

if you don't like the choreo it's one thing but Ron Morgan is a genius.. the mans had years and years of experience on broadway and his choreo is some of the most technical stuff I've ever seen and performed. I just find it hard to criticize a song as famous and mature as be Italian when half the groups around are singing stuff off mtv with very little musical value.. definitely not taking anything away from those groups because it(hip hop) is a very difficult style to conquer, but so is the stuff Carmel takes on. and I definitely do not agree with how you view the be Italian choreo. it's meant to be thoughtfully provocative but I don't believe it's close to "slutty" at all

Maybe your used to the Carla Doles era, or the old ways of swing choir, but this is show choir now and Carroll's show choir run by one of the best Directors I know of and she sure as heck deserves a bit more respect from the Alumni. The Men and Woman in the Show choir are also some of the most upstanding students in the circuit, they treat every choir with more respect then Iv ever seen.
I think that you may either be jealous of the vocals they had last night the other night (Which gave me chills!) or the fact that they are absolutely amazing now. I mean don't get me wrong, there not winning GC's everywhere they go but thats also do to the new ball game here at play.
They put on a show, I mean one heck of a show and they put hundreds hours of their time into preparing their show just like most the other choirs.
As for your comment on the Invitational....... WOW, you couldn't be more rude. The parents, volunteers, judges, and Carroll students put on one of 2011 largest competitions in the nation and ran 1/2 an hour over...... O MY GOSH!!!!! I think someone missed their bed time. That was one of the Finest Competitions I'v Ever seen!!! Hats Off To Jill, And the rest of the Parent Committee! They put on a spectacular venue and deserve nothing but respect for that!
and as for all the choirs that competed, you all deserve a HUGE round of applause, they should have called that STATE, You were all soooooo incredible!!!

just a plug for Carla Doles.... that woman can make a rock sing. if you think her style is too old for the game then.... you might just want to take a look at all of the trophies that we brought home this year. Grand Champions left and right for both the mixed group and womens group. we are top notch thanks to her.

don't bash doles.

1. After watching Minstrel Magic's show I have never been more ashamed to be a Carroll alumni.
2. Running more than 30 minutes behind is unprofessional and just plain annoying.

*I enjoyed the groups that made finals and am pleased with their placements.*

I LOVED their show. Definite win, no question. "Be Italian" was phenomenal, the costuming was great, and they had some fantastic prop usage. I've never seen anybody else attempt tambourines, but Ambassadors ran with it and the result was fantastic.

The students from (school withheld) that were behind me that rather loudly voiced their opinion that it was "nauseating" notwithstanding.

To Norwell, wow, I counted 20 singers on stage, and for them to knock off all these powerhouse groups, that is ridiculous what's in the water over there?

honestly.. it is just a lot of heart and soul. one thing that I love about being in both knight moves and knight stars is the fact that we are so small. It is a lot harder for choirs as big as the rest that were in the finals to get a close as we are. I am so proud of our groups and I couldn't ask for a better director/ assistant directors

this just goes to show that show choir is NOT about "QUANTITY"... it is about "QUALITY"

I was a senior in the Norwell Knight Moves group that made finals at Fairfield in 2007 and now I am an assistant with the group. We knew that we accomplished something special that day at Fairfield and we told our kids all week that just making the finals at Carroll this year would be just as difficult as it was for my group in at Fairfield. Our kids worked so hard yesterday and each of them really wanted it. Our goal every week is to compete at the highest level with the "big boys". As a small group there is no better feeling than "shocking" the show choir world. I could not be more proud of the Norwell kids. They have worked so hard all year long and have been improving leaps and bounds not only week to week but from day show to finals show at each competition.

It meant so much to Mrs. Doles to come back to Carroll and have a day like we did. Yesterday (like the 2007 Fairfield contest) will be a day I will never forget.

Yes, that was an AMAZING competition at fairfield, and this group has clearly only gone up up up!

So glad that you all are getting the recognition you deserve!

That being said, My all time favorite is Carmel. So.... how were they? (I ordered the DVD but it is going to take a week UGH)

Congrats to you and your group! You earned your success at the Carroll Classic! Both Norwell groups were Amazing all day! It was awesome being able to finally see and speak to Mrs. Doles again. I hope that she will continue to return and compete at Carroll in the future as well as Carroll taking that journey down to Ossian soon!

I was shocked with the results. I thought Franklin Central was amazing last weekend at North Central. The results at Carroll only prove the standard of excellence of Indiana show choirs. Congrats Carmel!

I totally agree. FC is definitely a force this year, but as i've said so many times, there are 20 groups in indiana that should make finals at every single contest they enter, about 15 of those groups are capable of GCing over the top 3 in the state on any given day...

Carmel, North Central, Lawrence Central, Center Grove and Franklin Central Always hold down the fort with amazing shows, but there are some years when groups like Zionsville, or Bishop Luers, or Warren Central, or Norwell (who also beat FC and Zionsville out of Finals in 2007 at Fairfield's competition) come out of nowhere and just KILL IT!

I am not upset at these results at all. FC is having a great year, and i'm happy for them, but I'm even MORE happy to see that all the choirs here in indiana, Zionsville, Carroll, Norwell, etc are improving SO much from year to year. I love upsets a LOT more than my predictions being right lol

I'm a Carroll Alumn from way back as well, and I think you make us all look bad by this kind of comment. It serves no purpose. Whether you like the show or not, those kids have worked really hard on it just like we did, and don't deserve to come online and see this crap. It's not my favorite kind of show either, but there are some cool ideas in there, and it's performed really well.

Not sure if you have been to any contests recently, but 30 mins behind has sort of become the norm. This was the first time that these parents have put on their comp in 3 venues in a brand new building. Given the logistics of brand new traffic patterns, New home room layouts, scheduling schools who brought multiple groups, trying to get judges a break in between prelims an finals, and a million other details that go into these things, I think the contest was run very well. I'm also sure that they will be looking at ways to get better next year.

If you don't like what you see from Minstrel Magic, that's fine, but why air it in public? Nothing good can come from it.

p.s. If you have an issue with anything I've said, please message me privately. I don't see any reason for this thread to be filled with this conversation, as it is one that should be held in private.

If you are so ashamed, then perhaps you should change your screen name?

It was late and those kids were tired, it happens at every invitational, anywhere.

I do agree with your final comment though, all groups deserved to be there, it was an amazing competition!

I would actually really like an explanation as well. Me being a carroll alumni as well, attended carroll for the past four years, all i have seen is their group getting better and better each year. This year is no exception, they did extremely well tonight. So i guess I am just not exactly sure why you would be ashamed?

Great job Norwell! If people weren't talking before, they should definitely start. You are a top notch choir every year and definitely made a statement today about being one of the best in the state. Congrats!
