Brea - considering your size you did very well. 21. I counted 10 girls 11 guys. It is not easy competing against 39 (Burroughs), 45(Burbank), and 3 billion (Diamond Bar).

Wow that was a great night. It was a great Festival to see for my first. I figured I'd be at Citrus College 50 more times so i tried to soak up as much as a could. Being a festival virgin, I was in aww the whole night, thinking to myself; "This is what it is all about. This is what I will be doing for the next four years"

Anyway, my thoughts about Aztec were great. I have to say that Diamond Bar was my favorite; you guys were so fun to watch. Burroughs and Burbank definetely lived up to their respected reputations. Arcadia was great and had incredible blend, I liked to suttle amount of choregraphy. I am relieved that I wont have to compete in the same division as you guys at Diamond Bar.

Now I hope I haven't said anything too controversial in the text of this post.
I'll see all of you at The Diamond Bar Spectacular!

I don't agree. If it were my group and there was a song to perform that either looked or sounded like crap. You do not go out and embarrass the group and director with a song that just falls apart. If you aren't ready to perform it DON'T. It's professionalism.

Let me just list the groups I saw. Sorry if you aren't on there. Not the bathroon break excuse. I was busy doing things.

Arcadia- better than I have seen in the last 2 years. I'm also glad you went back to the Black and White. It looks great on everyone and looks great on stage. The group was also bigger this year. I think either the amount of girls in the group helped the blend or you have much more talent, but either way you did an even more top notch job of blend this year, but balance could use work, my opinion. I also like that the choreography didn't call for so much "look like your having fun and put lots of energy into it". It just gives a better feel for the show. You were very well prepared. I think you show great talent in music this year. Your ballad was phenominal. Extremely well done. I would have tied you and Burroughs in music, but its really comparing peas and carrots. But there is no doubt in my mind you could use you perfect blending voices and steal music from Powerhous a lot this year.

Burbank - I love this group. The school is lucky to have such talent. I remember last year the guys in the group sounded amazing and you won an award at FAME for best sounding Male Voices or something. I think this year, your ladies would take that prize. The guys did sound good and had a very nice blend but not as "BURLY MAN" sounding as last year. The choreography is wonderful to watch, does need clean up but I don't need to worry I know it will be there. The ballad is the only thing I feel that kept you from 2nd or 1st. It didn't show you off as much. It was a different ballad and I am sure very difficult but I could see you doing a better song. Also there is one thing I have noticed with groups is that they lose pitch and intonation if the singers are stand too close to each other. Your formation is great just spread it out a little. This allows the group to hear others and hear themselves. Last year is a perfect example. I loved the portion of the show I saw. Be proud of that trophy.

Chula Vista - It was different this year. Can't say I welcome back the old outfits. The dresses are fine but the guys jackets always seemed to be a problem for the arm movement. Tear Them Down was a good choice as far as showing off the vocals for the group but the energy was dwindling and I remember you doing it not too long ago. I also like the girls sound this year. It seems more mature and a much better blend. Some powerful voices this year. Good job with the choreography it was pretty clean.

Diamond Bar - I enjoyed the beginning of your show much more than last year. I liked the use of the risers for height. With a big group like yours it gives the show a little more. The beginning was a nice smile bringer and comedy on stage is always welcome for me. But the second half of the show seemed to drag for me. I liked the choreography. But I saw the same blonde girl who used to have outrageous facials last year was in the front and center for the whole show. She did awesome but change is good. I just want to comment that some of the formations made my eyes jump. There is a part where you all face the back and put your arms to the side. It made me gasp cause it looked really cool. Gratz on 4th and Show.

Eastlake - I really do like your costumes. With the right lighting the whole stage turns blue and the next its all green. Cool. I think you did very well with your show. You showed some clean choreography and good vocals through the show. The energy was dwindling near the end. Clean up and work on the music and you could place against the unbeatables.

Brea - considering your size you did very well. 21. I counted 10 girls 11 guys. It is not easy competing against 39 (Burroughs), 45(Burbank), and 3 billion (Diamond Bar). I think the show could use a little more feeling. It was clean, could be cleaner, you sounded great, could sound better. If anything I would work with your blend and power to the point where it gets depressing, because with a group your size it is hard to beat the Unbeatables. There have been groups in the past who have placed above the unbeatables or near them with about the same amount of people. (Celebration and Westlake are the only two I can think of but there are more)it would be awesome to see your group do it. My secret would be to accent everything, crescendo and decrescendo everything, and change the cut offs in the phrases from what is written so you remember each one perfectly and the judges will notice these being the trained professionals they should be. Your balance and intonation was there, you sound good. Glad you placed in your first competition.

Carlsbad - I was told you have another new director this year. I don't want to say it, but there were tell tale signs of a new director. Just by the differences in shows from the last year. The song choice. Any director new to show choir will do "Puttin on the Ritz". The ballad was an interesting choice. You sounded great. It seemed like you were holding back a lot. The blend was awesome. You stayed in tune for a hard and untraditional piece. Clean up and blend when dancing. The "Keep Runnin'" I would be careful because you are all literally this <--------------> far from the mics. Picks up any voices. I like the outfits very classy!!!

BURBANK I FORGOT TO COMMENT ABOUT YOUR COSTUMES!! They looked great and always do. They looked a little grey in bad lighting on stage but still were a good choice.

BURROUGHS - Well Done on 1st place. this comment's title is "I Love You". Basically because I loved your opener, ballad, costumes, and hair. The girls look amazing with femme hawks. Especially the tall brunette with glasses, she looks amazing on stage, but all your girls looked amazing onstage. You took the hottest girls all around award this year, between the hair and the Atmosphere Blue short slanted dresses and all the HOT legs it is no contest. Okay the opener I would have never thought any group would do "Earth Song" by M.J. Makes me cry every time. And I wouldn't have chosen any other group to do it. I was in awe. Your arranger is isanely talented and same with the choreographer and same with all of you performing. I knew right when the song started what the song was and I'm not sure anyone else did as I was the only one making loud "OH" noises at the song choice. I was a little loud in saying it too. People looked at me funny. But my reaction to "Earth Song" and "Feed the Birds" is the reason that directors should allow their groups to do songs that you hear on the radio or in movies. I enjoy hearing songs I love 5 times as much as songs I have never heard before. In the end I think that the main goal in show choir is to please the audience member. NOT THE JUDGES NOT THE DIRECTOR, ME!!!!.....I mean the AUDIENCE. Your ballad gave you that music plaque. You blend and intonation is outstanding. The tone was beautiful in the girls as well as the guys and your tone is the only thing that separates you and Arcadia with the Musicianship award. I recommend that when you compete with the rest of your set you concentrate on your vocals to perfection or Arcadia will steal that Music from you. I liked ragtime but I have heard the arrangement from Burbank in the past. I did't like comparing the groups I loved, it made it hard to decide if I liked it, especially when they did certain parts better than you did. I FEEL SO BAD SAYING THAT!!!! You did it better all around but they had the "Burly MAN" sound in 2001. You probably have something different planned for next week. Jump. I was glad you did that because it kind of answeres my question of can show choir really do songs probably not suited for show choir. It was good, and I don't think it is easy to replicate whomever sang that song. (I'm sorry I don't know, it was a generation of music I never filled it with) Anways....you left me with the feeling of I WANT MORE!!! Which is good. Mary Rago better be the coolest director ever with you guys or I would kill her! You are something that most directors work their way up to.

Sorry that I was kissing Burroughs ass the whole time. I just think they did an outstanding job and me probably being their target audience they did their job perfectly. I was entertained and impressed.

My two cents.....

Overall, it was a good competition.  Deffinately NOT my favorite.  The competition spread of  80% music and 20% show is a bit out there.  And the whole "potty pass" is, in MY opinion, ridiculous.  Some of the students are 18, have jobs, and lead responsible lives.... and they have to use a "potty pass" to use the restroom?  Come'on now.  Please.  Now, I'd like to thank Mr. John Willson and Tom Kessler for judging tonight.  I do belive your scores were valid.  Thank you.  I would also like to tell Marquis that you guys were awsome.  Deffinately the best show of the night!!  I commend the group, Dave Willert and Doug Kuhl for having the integrity to perform your whole show tonight!!  I belive that if you're going to compete, then compete with everything you've got.  Don't comform your show to the spread of the competion.  That's just my opinion.  Good job to all the students who peformed tonight.  It looks like its going to be another exciteing season!!

Mark Keppel-  you're show was very entertaining and had some cute stuff.  It looks like you guys have a lot of fun perfoming your set, and I commend you on that!

Arcadia- You had a very lovely a cappella!

Burbank- Great job!  You guys sound very mature.  I hope to see more in your show next time.

Glendora-  BIG STEP UP from previous years.  I really enjoyed your show!!  You should have placed higher in my opinion.

Chula Vista-  I didn't get to see you

Diamond Bar-  Amazing!!  Best show of the night... hands down!!!

Eastlake-  I didn't get to see you.

Brea-  Nice set.  Your choreography looks similar to last year.

Carlsbad-  Again, nice set.  Are you guys going to have any costume changes in upcoming events?

Burroughs-  I love you all!!! You know that!  You're set is... different.  Vocals were great!  But like I said to Burbank, I hope to see more in your show next time.
My Placements (based on the spread of 80% music 20%Show)

1st- Burroughs
2nd-Burbank
3rd- Arcadia (music)
4th- Diamond Bar (Show)
5th- Glendora
My Placements (based on MY OPINION)

1st- Arcadia (music)
2nd- Diamond Bar (show)
3rd- Burroughs/Bubank
4th- Burbank/Burroughs
5th- Glendora

Ok... so that's my two cents.  Again, I just want to point out that these comments are strictly MY OPINION!  I thought everyone gave their best first show!!  See ya at DB Spectacular!!!

It's making me laugh!! Powerhouse is not hiding their set!!!! Well, actually, we are adding 2 songs by Diamond Bar. The first one I taught the choreography yesterday, well almost all of it and the second song I was handed the arrangement the night at Aztec Sing, the vocals taught yesterday and the choreo is being taught today!!!! So it's not even about the songs being ready or good enough yet, they hadn't even been taught. I congradulate Powerhouse students for being so amazing that they can learn 2 songs in a week and be good enough to perform them in the same amount of time. And to our audience, know that we are totally committed to giving the best show possible whether our material is ready or not. You are seeing eveything we have ready and everything we are capable of.

Tony A!!! I forgot you are a huge Van Halen fan!!!  Chula looked great on our tall risers!!!! You need to invest in some taller legs!! The group looked fabulous!! a wall of Chula!!!

Thank you tscott for your kind words!!

I love show choir!!!

Aztec was so amazing! I can't believe near year I wont be performing...:sigh: I loved seeing everyone again! A person forgets how many friends he really does have. haha MUAH!

Thank you guys for all your support and comments on PH's set..to tell you the truth, I seriously doubted our set because I knew that it was nothing that we've really done in a long time, but I actually had a change of heart the night before Aztec when we performed it all out in front of our families. Aztec was a turbulent competition (definitely many upsets, surprises, and wow factors for every choir!) and if every competition was as exciting as this one, this is gonna be a great season!! Good luck to everyone!!

Let me just say that POWERHOUSE was amazing!!!! Maybe it was because of me and my sister giving people in the group good luck letters, or maybe it cuz JEN O (who is my hero) is their choreographer and shes amazing, maybe its cuz MARY RAGO is their director and shes amazing too, or maybe its cuz the group is truly talented and they pull off such awesome shows every year. Whatever the case may be, I am truly in love with the set, just like i have been with every set they've done for the last 5 years. I totally wish I went to Burrough's so I could have been in PH. Oh well!!!! I didn't see any other groups really to make a good judgement on how the placements went, but seeing PH, I'm very happy they won!!!! I loved Earth Song and Jump. I can honestly say that I hate Ragtime and I've never seen a good version of it, that is until I saw PH do it. I loved it!!!! It made me happy to know that they can take a horrible song and turn it into something that's worth watching and sounds very good!!!! I also loved their arrangement of Feed the Birds. So beautiful. Damn, why couldn't I have been in POWERHOUSE????

Good luck to everyone next week. And I have to say it, just because I am an alumni, GO HART!!!! But, I'm actually rooting for PH this year, sorry, that's just the way the cookie crumbles!!!!

I love JEN too! - thanks for all of the wonderful hours of work you have put in to make our set come alive...the magic wouldnt be there without you!
~Burbank...holy crap...there is just something about the visual and vocal representation combined that makes me shiver! -although we are "rivals" I will always love you guys the best! (second to my own choir of course)
And Jen was 100% honest, we gave everything that we had ready for you on Friday, we hid nothing. But as of now, we are going to finish the rest of our set so that we may present it to you this weekend~
Powerhouse, get your butts off SCC and go learn the dance that Jen said we are learning today!
