Not once have Kev OR I said anything bad about any of the groups. I thought all of the groups were great. My only complaint, like Kev, was that the judging wasn't right. We aren't being angry with the groups either, we are angry at the judges that we both feel didn't give the groups a fair shake.

I wasn't @ this competition, so I cant comment on any of the groups. I will say that I have always thought that the ranking system has and always will be flawed, especially when you have girls groups competing against mixed groups. Two totally different sounds and visuals should always be judged seperately, thats why there is a "Girls" and a "Mixed" division @ 99.9% of all show choir comps. It also makes matters even worse when you throw in a judge or two that don't know what they are doing. With that being said, none of these groups should be discredited for the final outcome...it was the judges decision and ultimately they are the ones that have the final say.

Congrats to all the schools that competed, especially to both Norwell groups, who appear to be having another phenominal year. You guys may be small, but you have proven to be mighty. Keep up the hard work and cherish these times you have, because you will miss it when its gone.

I will try to clear a few things up. The placement going into the finals was this...

BD mixed
BD girls
Edgewood
Norwell Girls
TV
Norwell Mixed

Most of this was determined by one Judge, Rick Seaver. Rick had BD girls ahead of BD mixed by 17 points. The point spread between Norwell Girls and BD Girls was...
Judge 1: BD girls up 3 points on Norwell girls
Judge 2: Norwell Girls up 17 points on BD girls
Judge 3" Norwell Girls up 19 points on BD girls
Rick: BD girls up 56 points on Norwell girls

So after 3 judges norwell girls are up by 33 points. Include Rick BD girls are up 23 points. Norwell Girls and Mixed recived a 3 ( out of 10) in diction from Rick. To me a 3 means that the majority of your words can not be understood. Im not sure what the splits for the mixed show was but Rick had Whiteland ahead of Norwell mixed by 28.

For those of you who think the judge that had norwell girls ahead of BD mixed at the finals was crazy, he also had norwell girls ahead of BD in the day.

Things got worked out in the finals. It is unfortunate that one judge could mess everything up at a contest. During the finals Rick had the following in his ranking:

BD mixed
Norwell Girls
Norwell Mixed
BD Girls
Edgewood
TV

Im not sure why he changed his tune as much as he did.

It was a great day and congrats to all the groups.

I will give everybody a run down of this competition.

After prelims the top 3 standings were...

1st- Ben Davis
2nd- Edgewood
3rd- Teays Valley

I had no problem with that. I thought that those 3 groups were clearly the top 3. I would have had Norwell in 4th. The finals were a "ranking" format where the judges ranked the top 6, from 1st to 6th. This is where EVERYTHING fell apart. All of the judges had TV in 6th. Edgewood received all 5ths and one 3rd. The next two I don't recall. Norwell's Girls received a 1st and the rest 2nds and BD got all 1sts and a 2nd. The only group I agree with the placements is Ben Davis. But still, Norwell's Girls were over Ben Davis by one of the judges?!?

There are two things that could have happened 1.) Faulty tabulations or 2.) Messed up judging. I don't think a single group left happy. TV and Edgewood got SCREWED. I have been too well over 70 competitions (including Onalaska 2004) and this was the WORST I have ever been to as far as judging goes. The rest of the day was a good time, but this is how Shelbyville will be remembered. They will have a hard time getting any big groups due to this.

The sad thing is that two very good groups went home feeling like the wasted a day. Again I will repeat, this was the MOST messed up results that I have EVER seen. If there is no error this will severely discredit this competition.

I should add...
What I say here is not against the hardworking parents and students that put on this event. You guys did a great job. The judging/results were the messed up things.

I completely agree with you Kev. I went down to Shelbyville and saw a Teays Valley and Edgewood group perform their hearts out in the day round. I sat there in the auditorium listening to the day results and when they called Teays Valley in 3rd, I was shocked, because Edgewood (since I have been here) has NEVER placed in front of Teays. But we were told going into night show that we were in 2nd place. I was content with that because I felt that Ben Davis rightfully deserved to be in first. But when they had the night show results, and they called Teays Valley in 6th, my jaw hit the floor. But then it broke the floor and hit the basement when they called Edgewood in 5th. After seeing all of those groups, I had it like this:

GC: Ben Davis
1RU: Edgewood
2RU: Teays Valley
3RU: Norwell Mixed
4RU: Norwell Women
5RU: Ben Davis Women

I just want to read the judges sheet and see why they had us placed the way they did. But something isn't right. I rarely go off on a tangent like this, but I am still shocked and I feel that both the Teays Valley and Edgewood students need more credit than they were given last night.

I do want to thank the parents and students who put on the Shelbyville competition, everything was well run and there wasn't one time that I didn't see the workers without a smile on their face.

I will first congratulate Ben Davis on their GC. It was well deserved. The second part I will leave to a later time due to tiredness and anger. I will say there are several people who have A LOT of explaining to do. I hope for the sake of this competition that there was an error.

I feel the same way you do...I am still perplexed.

Hahaha. I totally just now saw this, Rian. Yeah - it'll be a tough one to predict. We're both pretty fierce competitors. ;)

Any predictions?

GC: Ben Davis
1RU: Teays Valley
2RU: Norwell
3RU: Edgewood
4RU: Lawrence North
5RU: Whiteland

To be honest...4RU and 5RU could be replaced by two single-gender choirs too. Both Edgewood and Norwell's women's groups have had strong wins this year.

Looks to be a fun day.
