The scores in the festival division must have been unbelievably close based on the way the caption awards fell, with Midland Trail winning it. After seeing both Trail and South Harrison I had NO idea who was going to win. Notre Dame was surprisingly VERY good, I had seen them previously at the South Harrison competition, and couldn't believe the improvement between these two events.

Awesome job to all competing groups on Saturday!

Now that things are slowing down... thanks Mr. Kincaid for clarifying how divisions actually work here (and for providing full results!). That was most helpful and the event page is fully updated. Congrats to Hurricane for 4 state titles in a row.

Tier One/Championship groups are broken out into A,B, & C. Grafton, Sissonville and Poca are Class C. RCB & Winfield are Class B. The rest are Class A.

Why are there subdivisions within the Championship division? Don't they just announce the top 5 overall anyways?

RobBurdette on Mar 16, 2018, 2:46 PM
Post #23

No, they usually have placements by class, then the overall top 5 placements.

Last year’s was just top 3 in each class. No finals

Rob- That's what I was implying. They do placements by subdivision.. and then announce the top 5 overall anyways. Why? Either metric/classification is fine, but doing both seems indecisive.

Ultimately, we can only display it one way on here. It looks like last year's event is posted by A/B/C class and that the overall placements are not posted. Meanwhile, the actual schedule for this event just lists them all as Championship. So, is Championship considered the official division type or is it the A/B/C classes? I'm good with whatever the preference is, this just doesn't make sense to me in terms of which way it should be posted.

It's always been my understanding that the champion in each class is the "state champion" for that class in the same way that sports championships in WV are divided by class, but the overall awards are more for bragging rights as being the "overall" champion.

Well thanks for the clarification! It's adjusted up above. At the end of the day, if WV directors and students like this system that's all that matters. It still seems silly to me and a bad metric to crown so many state champions by class in a state that doesn't have that many mixed competitive show choirs to begin with. Compared to Indiana, for example, which is so dang show choir dense and they simply award two state champs based on a large/small split... no festival or A/B/C or comparing the overall scores regardless of division. Probably the only time I'll praise ISSMA.

Rod is incorrect.

The Championship is ONE division. The class awards are just subdivisions to see how you would place in your relative school size.. There are no Grand Champions in each class A, B, C. There are 1st and 2nd in those divisions kinda like class divisions during prelims at most competitions. The only Grand Champions the vocal association gives out is to the Grand Champion of the Middle School and the Overall Grand Champion of the Championship division.

Hurricane is competing, they aren't really "hosting" it is more so of just using their school as a facility and they are eligible to compete and to lead things that day.

Thank you for clearing the air. I did see that it originally was in one of the best performance auditoriums in the state at WVU; but saw the change so wasnt sure. Thank you!!

That's correct. Technically the host is the West Virginia Vocal Music Association, under the umbrella of the West Virginia Music Educators Association

There is a 1st and 2nd place in each class and then overall placements in the Championship division. It is no different than most of the festivals you always attend when younger class awards in prelims and then overall awards in finals. Here, there is just no finals.
