Idk if this means anythinf but when people asked if you could rewind the livestream you couldnt due to copyright. So if there is a recording it would be illegal

I would also say no for the sole factor that it was a "paid for" livestream. If it was made as accessible for everyone for free, then you would have been scamming all paying clients. Maybe if you have to pay for it....

Not illegal, it would just be VERY expensive to acquire sync licenses for every single group that performed. That's why the performances were only broadcasted live. Unfortunately, none of them were archived so they are no longer available.

Ok, lots of speculation but hoping someone who is informed can answer my question definitively.

Not speculation. The stream will not be turned into a video.

Congrats to all the groups!!! I hate to be that person, but does anybody have a video of Sound FX? I watched the live stream, but would love to see them again!

i got most of their show but my phone died right before the closer started!! due to copyright issues, i'm not entirely sure i'm allowed to share it (or keep it), but if nobody objects, then i'll post it somewhere on youtube or google drive or something and send a link... (for real though if i'm not allowed to do this someone please tell me because i don't want to get in trouble)

I watched the stream as well. It's a conspiracy theory. Performance wise, we all know Los Al took it, both with visuals and vocals. For real, stop being salty.

I don't disagree with you that they had a wonderful performance. It could've gone anyway but I don't think I'm crazy, and I def don't think it's saltiness (If you wan't message me privately)

Anyways I have nothing more to say in this comment section about all of that. Absolutely stunning shows All throughout the day and BIG TIME Congrats to Los Al for the win. I'm gonna go read Great Expectations now lol

Vocals, FC had to focus on more breath support and blending. I heard isolated vocals. Was their sound still beautiful? Yes. But they were definitely out sung.

Only about the breath support and blend thing. It's fair to believe they were outsung. But let's not rip on them for what we heard on a livestream.

While fair, it was a livestream, there were moments where I felt they needed to blend more, emphasis on I heard individual voices stand out. Plus they were using a good chunk of vibrato (appropriate for their show) which ironically requires more support than not using it, and I felt it sometimes wavered from sounding like vibrato to sounding out of breath. Not trying to rip them apart, just offering a criticism as a lot of people said they should've won vocals and I disagree with that. However, their sound overall was gorgeous and fit very well for their show. In addition, all of the other groups had stuff to work on too, and as you said, it is a live stream. I can't give a full judgement without being there, which like many, I unfortunately couldn't be at

I’m cool with that opinion, and it sounds like you’ve done a pretty thorough (and fair, I might add) analysis! I just think this comp was way too close for us to say they were “definitely outsung.” To be honest I don’t even know for certain what I think about how this should’ve gone. I just couldn’t help but stick up for a group that I have a personal appreciation for!

1.) 10 times out of 10 the "isolated vocals' you're talking about are only heard (or are exaggerated) over video and are not apparent live. I think this is what Alex was trying to say.
2.) You're confusing Blend with Balance. Blend has to do with the uniformity of vowel shape, tone, and placement. Balance deals with the volume of all voice parts through phrasing and articulation.

Thank you for saying I'm at fair even though I do have a bias for Burroughs since they're my favorite choir, but overall there were strong performances from every group that attended. Plus finals was extremely close upon what Alex posted earlier on. Honestly, I thought FC was still going to take second even though I thought GC and Burroughs improved the most from prelims to finals. I was shocked when they were announced fourth, but I felt it was a justified decision from the judges because Burroughs, FC, and GC were on the same level as each other. Contrary to what my posts suggest, I really do have an appreciation for FC since I discovered them last year. Since we're both from Ohio, I think they are really similar in style to Findlay and I appreciate that. Sorry I am waaaay too passionate bout show choir..could go on for days

Thanks for your reply Alex. I would have to disagree with number one in that there are multiple instances, live and live stream, I have heard isolated vocals (and I am a guilty party cough cough Solon 2017 cough cough just to roast myself XD), which then ties into number two. Thank you for the correction. I always thought it was blend. Well, then it's balance I feel they could work on. Though as I admitted, it is just a livestream and they never do justice to the live showing.

BradleyDavis on Mar 26, 2018, 10:32 AM (Edited)

Well we hear the sound differently coming through the live stream than we would hear in person, a voice could stick out because they’re singing directly into a mic that’s hot — almost every show choir livestream ever does that. The only other option would be to place one mic somewhere strategically so that it’s a equal distance from all but even then you run into even more problems (audience volume when they cheer etc..,) feeding the front mic sound through livestream is so far the most efficient way of doing it. The only problem is, like I said before, someone being right in front of a really hot mic.

Fair assessment. But can’t students turn their head away from the mic and that solves the issue, or will the mic still pick up the sound?

I strongly believe the blend issues (or balance rather, as stated previously) was an issue with the stream audio. There are some videos on HOA's twitter, and in the video of FC's ballad, much of the balance issues I heard on stream were not present.

I'll refrain from commenting on how I feel things should've gone, since I consider every group who competed here a winner in my eyes, but I think it's important to note that the stream could've been (and streams usually are) a poor indicator of the attending groups' vocals.

i do find it odd that not a single southern group made finals, even though there were definitely some southern groups who could have easily done so

I think Petal (who came within point(s)) was probably the only ones I could see making finals. I can promise you if this comp happened again, the outcome would change.

I am with Brad, and if I read it right, Petal tied in points with Prairie so they went off of raw vocals and Prairie won by a few point, so they were very close.
