Small Mixed groups work just as hard!

I would even go further in saying that small mixed groups work even harder than large mixed.

Could somebody explain to me a bit more why there are small mixed finals? I don't recall any other northern competitions having this but i may be wrong.

This was a very interesting competition. Also, am in total shock over Marion Harding not making finals.

So from what I've gathered, one judge had Marysville 5th in finals.

In no way am I saying that Loveland is undeserving of the GC(their show is mesmerizing at times this year), but at the same time I find it hard to believe a judge would put a group like Marysville in 5th at this competition.

I'm not just going on about this bc I'm an alum, but over the past few seasons similar situations have arisen where almost all the judges will have a group ranked with 1's and 2's but then one judge will have that same group as a 4th or 5th.

Again, not complaining about the results, I'm genuinely curious about these "rouge" judges and why they think and score as they do. Obviously judging is an opinion based profession and the judges did a heck of job sifting through the wonderful talent at the Crystal Classic today.

Congrats to each group today and to Fairfield for 50 years! It will be fun seeing how the rest of the season pans out.

Anybody know the judges here? Very surprised by both Marion Harding and Chesterton not making finals.

I believe Chesterton was 7th and Marion Harding was 8th. The scores were interesting.....

Why? Because they can. Really. The Fairfield facilities are outstanding. They essentially run two different competitions all under the same roof - one catered to larger groups and one catered to smaller groups. The arena is an awesome setup for a gymnasium which hosts the larger groups and the auditorium is a bit smaller and so they host the smaller groups. Each has their own set of judges and run concurrently with one another. It doesn't slow down their day to do this and they get to host double the amount of show choirs. It's a win-win.

And since you bring it up, Brownsburg (Indiana) is hosting their inaugural competition this same weekend and they're doing it similarly although also having small/large women's finals round in addition to mixed. Must be an amazing set-up there too!

That is awesome i really like that small groups have that opportunity! Down here we have had a small group make finals on a rare occasion (usually when the large division is slim) but not because they arent good, just because of well sadly they are being judged equal with that of a group of 50+ singers. Alot of the small/middle groups here have tons of talent and that never gets seen due to the time they perform at. most large groups can perform as late as 5:00 in prelims so they will surely not get to the competition at 8 in the morning. Super cool to see schools working extra hard to make that happen.

Teays Valley has done it since 2010. It's for the same reason large mixed have Finals.

I'm pretty sure placements for large are

Loveland
Marysville
Petal
Hamilton
Whiteland
Olentangy

Personally think Marion Harding should be in finals, but that might just be my alumni bias.
