I do like to say is that competition was awsome, I was there all day and saw everything. It was absolutely fun. I saw something someone said about people in the back, the ones that can dance as you say. Well it seems that im usually in the back. And as my friend is in the back was also with me. I believe she got the best preformer award, so as of that of what you said all around anyone who is in show choir, were ever you stand can do the best, it just takes a little heart in what your doing to accomplish your goals.

Freshmen Can represent!

I wasn't trying to say that freshmen or young people couldn't dance. But you can't deny, you barely ever see a clumsy guy or girl in the front row.

I just wanted to make a comment as i've been watching this, Curious about FC and others we might see at state. Being a horn player myself, i find that with a small group of Pretty inexperienced (highschool) band members, Having a large ensemble helps in that you can Hide less strong players behind other strong players. Just as in the singer dancer portion of show choir. You never see the best dancers hiding in the back row. Right? it's because they're in front camoflauging the less experienced dancers. Thats all there is to it. Although Indiana has a great advantage in that we have some of the BEST Band programs in the country, and Carmel ambassadors are a testament to that.
What were the Shows? I'm assuming your comment on the IU vs Purdue* (spelling since you spelled it like a chicken. Perdue... pshh don't insult HAHA just joking.) but i'm assuming that was a novelty number of Franklin Centrals... what else was in FC, Dekalb, Northrop, and Andersons shows? And has Chesterton really improved that much?

Also, i noticed someone mentioned Van Buren earlier. Where did they fall in this comp?

I've read all of the comments made since the end of the Churubusco competition and would like to chime in with my own observations.
First of all, this site is a fun and interesting forum to observe opinions from any different viewpoints from
the show choir community (hence the perfect name for this site) and I look forward to the kids making predictions and comments after events. I travel out to competitions and look forward to logging on to SCC afterwards to see the comments.

I am logging on with a new and unassociated identity because what I have to say is not very pleasant and I don't want any repercussions from my comments to affect my favorite show choir, as we may be meeting some of these other schools again in competitions.

First of all I want to say that one of the true joys in my life is to follow my children's show choir to competitions. It is always a treat to meet and interact with parents and kids from other schools who choose to take on the arduous task of putting on a competition. What a chore, and I admire the organizations and kids and parents commitment to seeing these things through.

That being said, Churubusco, what a great job!!! I've never been to your school before and it is my belief that you guys had your approach together and made the whole experience comfortable. I mean, a whole day where everything started on time???????????? Where does that ever happen? The idea of having a hand stamp for access to the home rooms and the equipment staging area is something that other schools should implement.

Congratulations to all of the schools who competed here and all those who did not make the finals, let me tell you that I saw enthusiasm and commitment to performing in each and every one of you.

DeKalb: Fun show! Nice costumes. Is it ethical to have performers in both the Single-Gender and Mixed choirs?
My school doesn't. We use the Single-Gender as a development group, mostly because of the universal guys aversion to performing, and that way allowing the girls to become really strong. When I see the same strong performers in both groups, it almost seems like cheating.

Anderson: Nice show. The British invasion concept is really cool and the songs you chose are great. It is obvious to me that all of you kids in the group have a strong commitment to the performance and that is what makes a winner! I don't know what the judges were seeing but I think you were the 2nd strongest group coming out of the prelims.

Chesterton: WOW! I've seen quite a few of your shows in the past and I must say that this show has transitioned your group from an Indiana competitor to a National power. Tighten up your opener and your tap number and no one will be even close! I'm very impressed.

Franklin Central: Your daytime show, I thought was a little sloppy, although very cute with the IU and Perdue portion. But when I saw your evening performance, half way through, my thought was that I was witnessing a flawless performance. At the end I knew that your team set the bar and you were the group to beat.

Northrup: Good show. All of you kids showed a commitment to your show. How big is your band? 25 pieces? Two directors but the band played well together. The problems with big bands is that no one can hear all of the notes being played and after that whats the point? Were you trying to outsize Chesterton?

Judging: There seems to be a controversy about whether a particular judge was partial to a certain school. First of all, I don't know how much those judges get paid, but I truly believe that they are there for the love of competition and the special atmosphere of a show choir competition, since most of them have been there as performers or directors themselves.
On the other hand, as a show choir parent and stage hand, I was backstage after the perlims, and overheard part of a cell phone conversation where a gentleman was saying to another party that "Bill placed us first". and this was after the prelims. I don't know who this "salt and pepper" bearded man wearing a non-discript sweatshirt was, but it made me wonder who "Bill" was. Funny that it turns out that "Bill" was probably William R. Heins who was involved with Northrup for quite a few years. I wonder where Northrup placed on "Bills" grading sheets for the prelims!

I find this conversation ( as one sided and overheard as it was) curious as to some of the allegations or implications in this forum.

There has been a lot of conversation about inappropriate cheering in this forum. There's been admonitions and apologizes and all are recorded above but there is no excuse for rudeness. Speaking loudly during another groups performance (obviously not paying attention to your competitors) is just rude. Not only to the performing group, but to all those around you. Cheering when your group places above another is just wrong.

After the day performances, one particular group was sitting on the floor, with their legs extended into the hallway, after my schools day performance. When asked to move their legs, the response was "We don't have to, we are better than you". There is a place for trash talking,,, but maybe not here.

Lastly, I was rather upset about the amount of people with orange shirts, who over took the main floor seating, after the lunch break and never moved. At these competitions, many parents bring out grandparents and others who may be infirmed or otherwise hard to move around. My point is that after lunch there was a number (maybe 75 to 100) people who occupied the seats closest to the stage, after lunch, and did not move. Isn't it normal courtesy to move out of the way to let others sit close to see their kids or grandkids?

During the finals it became obvious to me that the adults that would not move from the main floor were associated with the same group that was causing trouble in the hallways as well as being loud in the stands.

Sadly the apple does not fall far from the tree.

show choirfan54... I'm so glad that you've brought some of the things you have to light. As the monopolizing on the floor seating has been a problem for quite some time... if I remember correctly from my three years involvement in show choir. Its about time some of the rude, unprofessional, and unsportsmanlike conduct be brought to light.

And might I just add that I'm glad you said it all... because I'm not sure some other people would have been able to say it with the eloquence you did. haha.

Northrop has always had class. It was something I always prided myself on...and it was and I am sure is still stressed very strongly. I find I hard to believe that it would have been that bad, but I wasn't there and there have been confessions and apologies. With that being said...I saw this kind of thing all the time form many different choirs, Dekalb being one of them. It happens and most the time is not meant.

Anyway Congratulations to all the choirs!
Especially Charisma and the instrumental ensemble.
I hope you continue to improve just remember to stay classy

While Northrop's reaction was inappropriate and unprofessional, we have to remember that we are dealing with high school kids, and emotioins sometimes get the best of them, as they clearly did on Saturday. I am in no way justifying what Northrop did, but perhaps we shouldnt be so quick to rush to judgement, as I am sure many of us have, at some point in our lives, also made mistakes.

Believe me, it will not happen again. Even though it took us over ten years to beat dekalb in a night show, we all realize how foolish and disrespectful we looked.Hopefully people can still see us as a classy choir and forgive us for our stupidness.

I realize that it was an exciting moment for your choir, but you have left a sour impression on a lot of people. It can take years to build up a good reputation, but it can take just a few moments of foolishness and unprofessionalism to shatter that reputation to pieces.

To start off...congrats goes out to all of the show choirs at Busco this weekend! FC Singers...very well deserved 1st place finish! I personally feel that all of the choirs did a GREAT job and had some very entertaining shows.

The big shocker came from the Northrop crowd after they announced that Dekalb had placed 3rd and they had placed above them. (To set the record clear now... I have no connection what so ever with Dekalb, I am just a show choir fan that was in the audience) The way Northrop reacted to beating Dekalb was not professional of them at all. I understand that the kids were excited about beating a rival group but the way they talked and screamed it in the hallway was not the professionalism that Northop usually has. I am stating this from my point of view from what I saw and heard. Northrop students in the past and parents of Northrop students have always shown a classy attitude but that was not seen at all at Busco after the final placings were announced. I am not making this up, it was a very clear thing to the entire audience that Northrop was not so much excited about getting 2nd as they were for placing 3pts above Dekalb. The excitment of beating a certain group and making comments about how "Yea, that is how it should be"...as stated by a Northrop boy in front of me, are best to be kept to yourself until u are on the bus or at home. I will say that it was nice of Northrop to cheer FC Singers for their grand championship but most people were still stuck on your reactions towards the Dekalb group.

Good job FC!!! You guys did very good! I think everyone deserved the placements that they got! I am sorry Dekalb for the roaring cheers from the Northrop area when you guys got 2ru... " border="0" alt="ermm.gif" /> We shouldn't have done it and we apologize for it! Yes we may have shown a lack of respect from that but afterwards when all of the choirs were leaving one of my friends in Charisma got spit on by a Dekalb person which is much much much lower than anything I have ever seen in my entire life! I hope it doesn't happen again!

Now...with all of that said I do have something else to...I guess point out. I have been watching show choir competitions for a long time now. I have seen some pretty interesting things in the past 12yrs but what I saw on Saturday night was a little shocking to me. Of course I was suprised about the final placements concerning how much they changed from the day placements but that was not the big shocker. The big shocker came from the Northrop crowd after they announced that Dekalb had placed 3rd and they had placed above them. (To set the record clear now... Again, this is just what I saw and heard and my thoughts....I am just an audience member but I do know that is not good sportsmanship towards Dekalb. I hope that in the future something like this would not happen again because looking back on it now...it did not make your choir look very appealing...This goes for all choirs. That is my two cents on it.

Here are the rankings by school for the Churubusco finals:

Franklin Central- 1, 1, 1, 2, 3
Northrop- 1, 2, 2, 4, 4(tie)
DeKalb- 1, 2, 3, 3(tie), 5
Chesterton- 2, 3, 3, 3(tie), 5
Anderson- 4, 4, 4(tie), 5, 5

Here are the rankings of each judge, first through fifth:

Aaron Coates (vocal)- Franklin Central, Northrop, Chesterton/DeKalb (tie), Anderson
Jay Emrich (vocal)- Franklin Central, Northrop, Chesterton, Anderson, DeKalb
Bill Heins (general effect)- Northrop, DeKalb, Franklin Central, Anderson, Chesterton
Jason Johnson (choreography)- DeKalb, Franklin Central, Chesterton, Anderson/Northrop (tie)
Kenny Shepard (choreography)- Franklin Central, Chesterton, DeKalb, Northrop, Anderson

Churubusco used a unique scoring system which weighted the categories of vocals, choreography, and general effect in different percentages than most of us are accustomed to seeing on a scoresheet. The categories were weighted as follows:

general effect- 42%
vocals- 32%
choreography- 26%

In addition, there were two judges for the vocal and choreography categories, but only one for the general effect category. This meant that Mr. Heins' scores were weighted approximately 2 to 1 with those of the vocal judges, and 3 to 1 with those of the choreography judges. Therefore, his scores had a disproportionate effect on the outcome of both the day and night rounds in comparison with those of the other adjudicators.

I know Bill Heins and have judged with him more than once, and if he thought that Northrop deserved the high score in general effect last night, then I believe him. I didn't get to see Northrop perform, but Bill is an experienced adjudicator with a great deal of integrity, and I don't think it is fair to question his ethics based upon last night's outcome... the real culprit here is the atypical scoring system!

Chesterton's groups had a great time at Churubusco. We have had our show for a very short time, and were pleased to meet our goal of making the finals. The second place finish in the prelims was quite a surprise! It was great to see some other groups' shows. I only caught Anderson and FC, both of which were excellent. Congrats to FC on a well-deserved win... you guys looked great!

Best of luck to everyone as the competition season gets into full swing.

I do apologize for the rude roaring after we knew we had beaten Dekalb. The truth is that we haven't beat them for awhile in Charisma history and we were glad that we know we have kept getting better each year and that we are at Dekalb's level of competition. That is all. We may have went overboard with the situation and I presonally apologize to anyone that this may concern. " border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />
