"That being said, I did feel like I was being screamed at a lot. I sat near the judges for prelims and thought it was pretty loud, and I got blown out of the water when I sat near the stage for finals. It's not that the vocals are bad, I just think you could probably take just a "little" more off of them in favor for a more controlled sound."

thanks for your thoughts/views

I definitely think we could work on controlling our sound at the end as well....

Wow! What a great competition! This was seriously one of the best finals I've witnessed in a while, just based on how every group picked it up. Just some opinions:

Edgewood: This was the first time I got to see you guys this year and as always, you didn't disappoint. I thought overall, the show was very entertaining, especially--like BroadwayBound said--how your choreography synched up well with what you were singing. As a Hurricane alum, I can't get enough of You Give Love a Bad Name, and I really enjoyed your arrangement. I thought the roughest part of the show was the ballad, but it was a tough one, and I give you props for performing it as well as you did. Keep it up!

Capital: When I first heard "Broadway," I thought, "Here we go again." I think Broadway gets worn out in show choir (and I would know, we did an entire show of it my freshman year), but I really enjoyed that you all departed from the better known showtunes and opted for some ones people might not have heard before. I especially enjoyed the ballad and I thought it was performed beautifully. I only got to see your prelims performance, but I felt like there was a little bit of energy missing from the show in your daytime performance. But still, it was another great Capital show and congrats on your placement.

Nitro: Great job! I was talking to some other people at the show and we agreed that you're one of the most improved show choirs we've seen over the past couple years. I go back to my days in show choir (when you weren't even the Showcats) and look at what you've become and wow! I thought you did VERY well, and I enjoyed the show concept. To be honest, the opener was my least favorite part of the show, and not because you didn't perform it well, just because of the song it was. The choreography was simple, but it was very clean and think you were much deserving of your ranking! Congrats to you guys!

Garfield Heights: Another stellar show. You guys are really making a name for yourself, especially for the relatively short time you've been together. While most people will rave about the "geek" number this year, I actually preferred the "Show Choir Heroes" part, I thought it was extremely funny (especially the crooner in the background). I thought the execution was good throughout the show as well as the energy, but like BroadwayBound said, I think your polka number does a lot for your overall concept. I think it's important to remember that even though it's a novelty number, it still needs to be performed well. It's definitely a crowd/judge-pleaser, but at times the choreography can get sloppy and the words tend to be muddled. That being said, you all keep improving every year and your show is always a pleasure to watch.

Hurricane: Fantastic job guys! I can't get over the choreography this year, it's definitely a long way from the "Hurricane doesn't dance" days of old. I think you guys really perform the heck out of the show and your sound was the most controlled all night (and you really stepped it up in finals). I think at times, you start to lose your diction a little, but it seems like it was better in the night cap. Additionally, with the choreography, you have the potential to lose a bit of steam at the end, especially in the closer, but I think that has to do a lot with the fact that Push It to the Limit is a really high-energy song, so comparatively, the closer can seem weaker. Your ballad was incredible and just overall, I thought the show is your best to date. After Teays' performance in finals, I thought it was theirs for sure, but you all didn't go down without a fight, and after it was over, I thought it would be a toss-up between you and them. Keep it up guys!

Teays Valley: Just wow. I'm so glad to see you guys back in your regular form. Your choir has a very mature look to it and thought you performed the heck out of a difficult show. Your guys are among the best I've seen in a long time. I actually enjoyed the cage concept at the end, because frankly, I can't think of a time when something like that's been done before, and it really was one of the cooler closers I've seen. That being said, I did feel like I was being screamed at a lot. I sat near the judges for prelims and thought it was pretty loud, and I got blown out of the water when I sat near the stage for finals. It's not that the vocals are bad, I just think you could probably take just a "little" more off of them in favor for a more controlled sound. I think that overall, you had the most exciting show of the evening, but I thought that Hurricane might be able to pull it out because they were more controlled. However, I think your Grand Championship was much deserved and you guys really amped it up in finals (I saw one person fall, but I think that's about it). Good luck the rest of your competition season. I think it's safe to say that Teays Valley is back (not to say you ever really left)

Like I said, overall, just a wonderful competition, all the choirs were great throughout the day and the finals definitely did not disappoint. I hope to see a couple of you throughout the rest of the season. Great work and big congrats to Teays Valley again.

My humble Opinions:

Capitol- Very cute; you guys didn't do traditional show choir, you put on more of a show. I like a little variety, spice of life and all that jazz. I was expecting some kind of tap when you did "let yourself go" but sadly no...no tap. Good job overall. I heard you did much better during finals.

Garfield Heights- I hate to say it, but I think you get most of your points just through your "Polka" number. Good overall sound, I couldn't understand you at times. I'd only seen you once before...a couple of years ago I think, and you have greatly improved since then. You have the potential to beat really "up there" choirs this year.

Teays Valley- I preferred your first half to your second half. A gripe- you took 15 minutes to set up your set. When it started I was very impressed, middle was good, but then it got to the end. I was not a fan of some of the "cage dancing" that was going on. When one guy got to the top and started swinging his head back and then mouthing "What!" to the audience, I couldn't help but role my eyes. It screamed obnoxious. Besides that bit with the cages, you guys put on a very strong show. It was very different from when I used to compete against you. I had it up for grabs for GC for you and Hurricane.

Hurricane- Something was missing in this show, and I think it was the second number with a "mara" solo in it ;) You def. amped it up for the finals show. Some people say you were too loud but I don't think they took into consideration the mike situtation. GH and TV had the mikes wrapped up higher. They were brought back down for you. I thought TV yelled more while you had a mature sound. I had you guys taking Vocals. I've seen more exciting shows from you but you had a lot of energy. Soloists were good, but I'm not sure if I liked the whole "solo" for a whole song going into another long solo. Have fun at Disney!

Nitro- I was excited to see you, I had heard good things about you and I was glad you made finals. Main gripe- your soloists are good, but some needed to have more confidence when they sang. I loved the whole theme, it was put together very well. I love when shows "glide," the songs just seem to so into the next one. Keep up your streak of making finals everywhere you go! Oh, and I loved the fact that you did the "frozen medley" that I got to do my sophomore year. I even recognized some of the choreography. I liked the way David redid it. Have a great year!

Edgewood- I'm guessing the first soloist guy was the one who won in the soloist comp.? He was very good and had a great tone to his voice. Vocals- overall sound a little "younger" than some other groups, but I have heard a lot worse, so it didn't bother me that much. Cute show, cute concept, you really played with the choreography so it was matching what you were singing.

Not let me say that before anybody gets mad... I enjoyed ALL of the shows. I wasn't sure if I would buy a DVD but in the end, I decided I wouldn't mind seeing all of the shows on repeat ;)

The placings went as what I thought they would, but I wasn't completely sure who would come out on top. TV had a more exciting show, but my jaw only dropped once during the evening and that was during Hurricane's ballad.

Good job to all!

Yeah, we are trying to remedy the spread sound that comes from the girls. A lot of them are new, and they just don't get it yet. lol

The glory of show choir is the change you see in groups. Teays was a traditional choir with a traditional approach. Now... what you see is the new Teays Valley. A new director and a new style. They have fun with the show and are apparently doing well with it. It's fine to not like a style... I heard a lot of compliments on the new style so I think the style suits them well.

thanks kev!

Hurricane had a good sound like always...I just didn't feel it had the same punch it normally did, and there were parts after the ballad it seemed they got a little winded which isn't normal for them. I didn't see their finals show though. I had Teays winning vocals after the day

Winfield, sounds like a decent start to the season against a totally BRUTAL line-up! Keep plugging away, get those last songs in there, and lets see what you can do this season. You've been great to work with, and I know Mr Haught's very proud of you guys. God Bless, Damon Brown

congrats to Teays...I wish I hadn't been so amazingly tired so I could have watched finals.

Winfield was apparently 7th..which does make sense to me, I was just trying to be as unbiased as I could be so I moved them down a few spots..not bad for a first time out with half a show.

Teays Valley: AMAZING! They much deserved their GC. Honestly, there was no question in my mind after their performance in finals that they were the the best there today. I had you as Grand Champions all day. Fantastic job on a well-deserved and justly earned GC!

Hurricane: The only thing I have to say critically about the show is that louder is not always better. Absolutely screaming your vocals didn't sound good at all. I'm sorry if this is harsh, but I wasn't impressed with your usually stellar vocals. Choreography was solid as always, though, so congrats on that. I had you as 2nd RU.

Garfield Heights: REALLY, REALLY impressed with your show. The difference between Marysville (the last time I saw you) and tonight was like night and day. Solid vocals and dancing. Great job. I had you 1st RU.

Nitro: Great job! This show is the best I have ever seen from Nitro. I'm so proud of you guys, having climbed the ranks and worked your way into the top section of WV show choirs. Great job, again. I had you 3rd RU.

Capital: Performances during the day and night were like black and white. Going into finals, I was actually a little surprised that you made it. It wasn't bad at all, but it wasn't the best either. In finals, you really stepped it up and gave a solid performance. I had you 5th RU.

Edgewood: I LOVED the show. I was entertained throughout and I thought your vocals and choreography were very good as well. Closer is great, just to let you know LoL. I had you 4th RU.

So to me...

GC: Teays Valley (BV/BC)
1st RU: Garfield Heights
2nd RU: Hurricane
3rd RU: Nitro
4th RU: Edgewood
5th RU: Capital
