(jason)"on a side note- i have never even heard of SE Polk having a competition. I wish they would promote it better!"

You know...i think my sophmore year when i was in synergy...we lost to sound advice at the SEP comp...or maybe i was in sound advice and lost to 8th grade impact...either way...it sucked...but it was at SEP for sure...(I think)

There were 9 groups total that made it to the competition. They only announced the awards within each class and the top 6 point-scorers that comprised the finals awards. The didn't announce the rankings of the remaining 3 choirs, nor did the director's packets include a sheet that had overall choir rankings.

It was a 4A competition but the 2 choirs from CR Praire had to cancel and so did Marshalltown. We were so grateful SE Polk let us add in at the last minute. I hope we help them turn a profit by bring our three groups and many fans. We were so proud of our Johnston students who made lemonade out of lemons. They so wanted to compete at Kennedy and go up against Urbandale and the others. Urbandale took charter buses which may be why they were allowed to go. Our Johnston groups gave award winning performances in spite of the circumstances and we were all very proud of that.

well... apparently there was 1 group that competed that wasn't in finals (i believe.... maybe two). so really results wouldn't have been that different.

Molly is right -- the food was great. In addition, the SE Polk folks could not have been more gracious or welcoming. (Our host, Isaac, was especially fun!) Thanks to everyone associated with the competition for making it possible for our kids to have a great day!

It is true, and I feel bad as well for the groups who were booted out of the top 6 because of Johnston.

But, I am glad Johnston did get to compete. I've been through competition cancellations twice in my junior year; and it was a major bummer. It was good to see a happy ending at the end of the day for J-Town.

Yea I agree completely. however there were 2 other schools there that were 4a schools. but preps (indianola and roosevelt) I believe only 2-3 schools that were there other then johnston (and the two preps that I mentioned) that weren't 4A.

on a side note- i have never even heard of SE Polk having a competition. I wish they would promote it better!

I think it would be interesting to see who would have been in the top 6 had Johnston's three groups not competed.

So, I wasn't at SE Polk's contest, but I have been told by numerous people there that the walking tacos they served were the best that anyone had ever had. So congrats on the food!

FINALS

Finals at this competition were an interesting affair. As the day went on and the snow came down, groups kept canceling. In the interests of everyone's safe travel home, the contest director chose to hand out daytime awards as normal, and hand out finals awards at the same time based on the day round performances. Finalists at SE Polk were going to be the top six scorers regardless of class, so the finals awards went to the six choirs with the highest scores.

GC: Johnston "Innovation"
1RU: Johnston "Synergy"
2RU: Des Moines Roosevelt
3RU: Lawton-Bronson "Momentum"
4RU: Johnston "Sound Advice"

Best Choreography: Johnston "Innovation"
Best Band: Johnston "Synergy"
Best Male Soloist: Alan Nagel, Johnston "Innovation"
Best Female Soloist: Molly Schunicht, Johnston MS "Sound Advice"

Here are the times that Johnston was given:

10:45am Sound Advice (9th grade)
2:45pm Synergy (prep)
4:45pm Innovation (varsity)

Finals are up in the air due to weather concerns - but could start @ 6pm.

I haven't heard anything about any other groups performing.

Anybody know anything about the SE Polk competition today?

I only learned about it this morning when it was announced Johnston wasn't allowed to go to Cedar Rapids (yet Urbandale was - go figure...), and was able to get into this contest instead.

I haven't seen anything else on it here - so.... anyone? Anyone?

SE Polk's competition was only open to 3A and smaller schools. This was the first year they had opened up the competition to 4A schools (probably the reason you didn't know about it). There are actually a lot of competitions that don't allow 4A schools (i.e. Central Lee, West Burlington, West Liberty, etc.). My group was supposed to come over today to SE Polk, but had to cancel due to weather.

Good luck to everyone today. Hopefully Mother Nature will be kind.
