Yeah we got the points from Reese and I must say that all of the Show Choirs did a TREMENDOUS job! Linn-Mar, you guys have such a cool show this year. I seriously thought that i was getting hypnotized. I just absolutely love Washington's show, especially the closer. Tap and backflips! I love it! And CSI did an awesome job too
Ankeny=OMG

From what I remember, or had heard from various people, was that there was a difference of 40-50 points between 1st and 4th place after the day round. I believe Linn-Mar was only about 3 or 4 points away from Davenport Central who was behind Washington by quite an amount. Washington I heard was only 10 points or so behind Ankeny.

These points are probably wrong, but for some reason they're stuck in my head.

This are the scores for the day round and finals:

1. Ankeny-524
2. CR Washington-512
3.Davenport Central-470
4.Linn-Mar-466
5.Ankeny(prep410)-
6.Anamosa-390

Finals-
1.Ankeny-1st/1st/1st/1st=4
2.CR Washington-2nd/2nd/3rd/4th=11
3.Davenport Central-4th/3rd/2nd/3rd=12
4.Linn-Mar-3rd/4th/5th/2nd=14
5.Ankeny(prep)-5th/5th/4th/5th=19
6.Anamosa-6th/6th/6th/6th=24

I just found out that our prep director was asked to judge this competition, but turned it down. I wish she would have!!!

Finals were not scored, they were just ranked. And no, I don't have points for daytime. I know Ankeny was well ahead of everyone.

Does anyone happen to have points and everything?

That would be great to see.

My opinon being an an alumni is that if your not in show choir, you should just observe the messages of these people. Alumni should take this in an take everything with a grain of salt. Everyone has the right to feel they do, but because you are no longer in show choir you should not get so involved in these things. I know people are just trying to justify there reactions but sometimes it just starts arguments that don t need to be started. Once again everybody has the right to there own opinon about each group.

I don't know how Kyrie and Canto Alla Vita are such different songs. Yah they are in a foriegn language, but they definitely have a show choir feel, especially Kyrie (which a few groups have also done). And Michael Buble isn't show choir???? Also, who hasn't heard of a rock closer? Yah, 2004 was a weird show. Look at the years before and after. The shows may have a diverse mix of songs each year, but they are all show choir style, only from different genres. Just because a group had one crazy year means nothing. Lastly, just because a group has a choreographer who uses non-traditional moves doesnt mean they are different. Many (most?) of April's choreography is just different, no matter what song is chosen. And let's all remember. Which group has rapped on stage, danced for 5 minutes straight, performed Bohemian Rhapsody, and street tapped (not a show choir norm at all). Momentum has also sung African chants and songs in Spanish. I believe Washington was the original innovative show choir in Iowa (along with Cedar Rapids Jefferson when they did the operas) and Momentum's success with their original stuff allowed other choir to follow in it's footsteps.

Honestly, I want to stay out of this topic because I don't want to start any drama myself. However, Jay, have you seen Momentum? And I showed you Linn-Mar only from a tape, which was from our premier concert. So I honestly don't think you should be comparing and adding your opinion when you haven't seen both groups live.

ALSO, why are you trying to argue about Linn-Mar being innovative? I guess I'm not really sure what you're trying to prove ...

Mt. Pleasant was interesting and didn't turn out the way we all thought it would. Some agree with the placings, others don't. We'll just see what happens when Great River rolls around.

I'm not getting really defensive about this. Everyone that knows me knows I like to argue for argument's sake.

I might be different, but I have kind of always viewed Linn-Mar more on the edge and innovative than Washington. I think the big turning point was 2004 when they went all dark and creepy. Their version of Bring Me to Life and Love Is A Healer wasn't exactly very "show choiry" and then with all the foreign languages and melting Michael Buble, Celine Dion, and Foreigner in one show is pretty crazy...but it works so well. And these songs are put with interesting choreography. Let's be honest, I can't imagine a Linn-Mar group every tapping or doing very swing dance moves...

Washington, to me, seems to do traditional (this does not mean easy) show choir moves to unique song choices. They are diffinitely different than the norm, but not quite as out there as Linn-Mar. So, I don't want to seem like I am defending Linn-Mar's low placement. But I could see how show selection COULD affect placement in a competition. Because I do think it affected Linn-Mar in 2004, and I think it affected Washington in years too.

EDIT: Ohh, and I do think it will be interesting now to see how Linn-Mar and Washington compare at Great River. I think things will change.

I certainly wouldn't want to generalize that choirs who tend to have a different show place lower than choirs who tend to perform the "typical" show. I was simply saying at this particular competition, Linn-Mar's show didn't appeal to these particular judges' tastes. Every competition has different judges which brings in a different dynamic. That's part of what drives choirs to improve and grow.

Anyways...I had fun yesterday

I would like to generalize that. Having been in a choir that normally has a "different" show, I know this happens. Just ask Jen Oundjian :-P But look at Momentum this year. They definitely have a more show choiry show, not at all like regular momentum. I know the past few years DK has been trying to go more show choir since Momentum hasn't been placing as well. The students get really discouraged with placing low because of the song selection and choreography style, so I know DK has been taking steps in that direction. That being said, more people don't like Momentum's shows now because they are more boring (in my opinion) but they are better. Something that is always being discussed. At least last year everyone was talking about how many good choirs had boring shows. Wow I am rambling. I've had a long and stressful night...

It was nice to see our hosts from Linn-Mar again; I thought that all of the groups did really well. Sadly I didn’t get to see Linn-Mar nor did I get to see West Side or Momentum. However, I did hear that your shows were fabulous.

I think you are flashing back to Michael Reese's days at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The choir I think you are referring to is Davenport Central "Central Singers, Inc."

This competition was amazing, the way that it was run, even though I thought it was a little late at the ending, there were no delays as far as I know. I really liked the critique session, and the FOOD was awesome, especially the potatoes. I loved our hosts they were really nice.

I’d really like to congratulate everyone, it was an awesome time. Go Anamosa!
Good Luck for the rest of your season!

You didn't come across as rude to me. I've just been in Momentum before and no one ever says anything about momentum. Honestly not a lot of people even come to watch their performances. Some of that may have to do with performance times, but sometimes not. Momentum is just always underrated and so at one competition they do really well and people just brush it off. It's just sort of irritating. I'm sure you don't really know what I'm talking about since GCS always has success. But after a while it just gets to you, so I'm just trying to stand up for my group now, because before I haven't been able to, due to actually being in the group. People just say, well that's cuz they're your group.

Well, I know exactly where you are coming from on that front.

Anyways, I wasn't at this comp, but I do believe that Linn-Mar, at least last year definately classifies as a "different" show choir. Opening with the foreign language piece is a good example of that. However, to say that different shows don't win seems false to me. Last year Linn-Mar placed very well at most, if not all of their competitions (i dont remember off of the top of my head). It really all comes down to the execution of the show. At least from my observations.

The part about the judges always bothers me. I don't appreciate it when people criticize judges for basing their placings on their opinions. I think it's important for judges to have an open mind rather than being stuck in their own way, but I would never go as far as to say what a judge says is "wrong"...perhaps just...inaccurate for lack of a better word.

Washington's a great group and many parts of their show are entertaining to me every time I see them. I've seen great improvement in them since I saw my first CR Washington show just 2 years ago at MoShow. The first time I saw them this year I thought I was watching a new group, and they keep on surprising me. I understand about you being proud of them because lord knows I'll stick up for my choir next year.

I wasn't demeaning Washington's performance in any way nor did I comment on the fact that the judges were crazy. As I stated earlier in my post, show choir is subjective. Judges have their own opinions of what makes a show choir good and nobody can change that nor would I want them to change that. (It keeps things interesting)

Maybe one thing I didn't make clear wasn't just the fact that Linn-Mar had a different show, but that I think they performed better than Central and Washington. Vocally I thought they were so much more connected and invested. Perhaps my comments came across harsh or biased, but I still stand by my opinion. I'm sorry if I came across as rude. I guess that's the beauty of subjectivity...it doesn't really care who it upsets.
