it's not necessarily the hosts fault, it's the ability to deal with ANY situation by the group.

I totally agree with you, because you should be prepared for any and every difficulty that you could encounter at a comp. Like Jeremy said up above, for finals we had flash lights that our crew used to shine light into the tents for us during the changes, which help out A LOT!. So i guess that if you run into any difficulites during the prelims and plan to be in finals you should run out and get something to aid you if your able to.....just my piece about this issue.

At competitions, regardless of the situation you have to learn to deal with it. At Monona Grove last year we dealt with the space behind teh risers too, and we had a backdrop, it was hard to fit but we did. Also, we takes lights to EVERY competition just in case their aren't lights in the dressing rooms, it's not necessarily the hosts fault, it's the ability to deal with ANY situation by the group.

That's what seperates good from great ~ and that's also what show choir is about - Going out and doing your show the best you can, while performing in different styles of stages, and adapting to fix it...~

If anyone has DVD Info (a website) that'd be much appreciated~!

I had such a great time @ Monona Grove! Everyone that was there was awesome! Cedar Rapids, Congrats on Best Combo- you really deserved it ( I love you ballad by the way)

Hastings! I didn't get to see your show live because of equipment moving and such, but the little I saw on the feed was awesome! I saw mostly your novelty, and it was hilarious! " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> (Jake, I could see you on your box on the TV!!! lol)

And I agree with Euphman-it was a tight squeeze!!! It would have helped if there were more stairs, but we managed. Everyone who hosted was super nice and helpful

So this is the first time I've posted on here, (also first year I've been in show choir) but I just want to say that I loved the show Monona put on, everyone was very friendly (especially Lodi and Totino people). Met a couple people chillin in a stair well (including your drumline) and almost everyone met me with a smile and a kind word. Totino- I don't know what to say about your show others than you are simply amazing singers. Your female vocalist sends shivers down the spine of almost everyone in the crowd.

Another problem occured in the changing tents. There was not sufficient lighting in the tents, so several people were late during the costume changes due to the fact that they couldn't see what they were doing. In general, make all accomidations that you can possibly think of, and others will be grateful.

We had that problem too - we ended up using flashlights the second time around and when i needed to change I grabbed my stuff and got out where I could see, but, the judges couldn't see me~
We had probably a third or fourth of our guys on late for our guys number (prelims) cuz of that problem~ I had a major problem /w one of my vests and i just gave up and got ready for the closer ... but yeah, we shared one of your problems

I admit, i'm fairly pissed about this. not that we didnt make finals, not that we got 7th, but that we got the exact same vocal score that BRODHEAD got, and we never sing in less than four parts, and often sing in 8. Our vocals this year are better than they were last year, and last year we got second in vocals at Great River, behind only mount. prospect. I'm sorry if i sound pissed, but i am, because i konw that we had better vocals than that, and i truly feel gipped by this. I have been wondering, since when singing in 1 part or maybe 2 parts is equal to having a strong tone, good dynamics, and 8 part harmonies.

I bet your band overpowered you, and you just didn't realize it. That was a huge problem at Onalaska this year, and Monona Grove last year. Bands didn't balance well at ALL! Sometimes, the key to best vocals is the best balance in the band. And if they haven't ever overpowered you this year, you probably haven't performed in a gym this year.

I would just like to make a few suggestions to all host invitaional groups. Make sure that your stage set up will accomodate all shows to the best of your ability! You must plan ahead and be able to make changes for all groups. Ex. - make sure that there is adequate lighting and space. This past week at Monona Grove my show choir encoutered a few slight set-backs. We only had about five feet behind the risers. Two feet had to be open for our singers and dancers, so that only left about three feet for the band. We have a fairly large band of 14, and we found it rather inconvenient to all squeeze together so tightly. So please allow more space behind the risers. Another problem occured in the changing tents. There was not sufficient lighting in the tents, so several people were late during the costume changes due to the fact that they couldn't see what they were doing. In general, make all accomidations that you can possibly think of, and others will be grateful.

I remember seeing this point of contention before, 8 part harmony vs. 1, 2, or 4 part harmonies. I guess the only thing I can say is, you have to make that 8-part harmony look just as easy as the 1 or 2 part harmony, or else it loses its effect.

I thought that Brodhead's vocals were quite good. Taras Nahirniak (MG's arranger and quasi-assistant director) arranged their show this year and he rarely arranges anything that is less than 4 part harmony either, and often it is at least 6 parts. So I bet that it actually was at least 4-6 parts, and they just did a better job of making it look (sound?) easy.

Sam Johnson was from Totino not Ceder Rapids. Congrats to everyone, it was a fun competition.

I guess the "C" word I heard was "Company" and not "Cedar".

Thank you so much to everyone at Monona Grove for hosting that competition. Everything went so well, and everybody there was so nice. Thanks to our hosts as well - they were great.

I didn't really get a chance to see really anyone, except for a few prep groups in the morning and Totino at their day round performance. Totino, I thought you guys were great, your vocals were REALLLLLLY good, and all of my friends think that the girl who won best soloist should make a cd, we would buy it. =) I was very impressed. I'm excited to see you all next weekend!

Congratulations to everyone!

fun competition everyone! We all had a lot of fun at this comp.! our hosts were awesome!

I was upset that i didnt get to see very many groups.

I did see parkview, brodhead, and madison east.

Parkview-Your opener was really good. The dancing in your closer, guys , and girls pieces rocked! i was so inpressed! vocals could have been stronger.

Brodhead- Your show is sooo different from last year! i really liked your second number...whatever it is...the dancing was awesome! and as usual your vocals were great.

Madison east- i was soooooo surprised....you guys rocked this year! i was really impressed!

monona- I really like your show, its sooo different, and you guys pull it off reaally great. I liked it alot!

you guys should all comment on OASC...im really interested to see what people think...

Just a couple comments on yesterday

Hastings- I love you geys! I love watching your shows because no matter what you are singing you guys love it. Just one little comment I have is that the guys need to make sure the pants in the novelty stay on because it sort of gives away the suprise.

CR Washington- Great show. Congrats on jumping up in finals. I was sitting next to some people in our band while we watched you and they were just blown away at the sound that your band made. Just be careful that the band doesn't overpower the singers becuase that's what I felt it was like in the closer.

Brodhead- Great rebound from last weeked. I like that the guys are wearing black ****s now, it just looks cleaner. Keep up the good work.

Iowa City West- Fun show. I felt that at times it could of had more choreography but your vocals really did make up for the lack of choreography. You guys got a tough break but just keep working hard

This was a really fun competition and congrats to everyone because many of you were very prepared for being at this point in the season.

P.S. Lauren Baker, you were very inspirational. If you end up attending UW-Madison, you can keep your $3.55 $1.35, because this latte your first cup of Gourmet Johnson Brothers Coffee is on me. Unless you're only a sophomore- then I'll be gone anyway. But in any case, you're probably going to be a Squawkeye or a Cyclone anyway, not a Badger like us cool people. ;)

Seriously, I enjoyed listening to your solo in the solo competition, and watching Taylor the Latte Boy. That has to be one of the funniest songs I've ever seen, because you're so dead serious and overly dramatic. Everyone else in the ensemble was also great, not just you.

If you have not seen Iowa City West's show, you may not understand the inside jokes in this message.

hey, i'll pass on your sentiments to lauren (she never posts here), i'm sure she'll be very appreciative. (btw, she is in fact a senior)

Congrats to everyone, especially Monona Grove! We had a great time at your competition, starting on Friday night when we unloaded our equipment, until we left on Saturday night. We had the nicest hosts, the parents were all incredibly friendly and helpful, and everything was SO organized. Hard to believe this was only what, your 4th year of competition?

Thanks for the comments Big Al. We could tell right away during the prelims performance that some of the audience didn't understand the novelty. That's okay- we like challenges, and clearly, getting the novelty to click for audiences will be one of our biggest this season. After being exposed to the novelty since August when it was started, it's hard to believe people wouldn't see how incredibly tongue-in-cheek it is, and how we're kind of making fun of ourselves (again), but oh well. We'll keep working!
