A couple thoughts...

The Holmen choreographer was never a scoring judge yesterday or last night. He was a critique judge during the day only. This is pretty common across the show choir universe.

Second, I sat in the gym yesterday and watched every performance on the stage. I will say that I actually agreed with the placements at the end of the night. Holmen improved the greatest from day to night and owned the stage. CR Washington had a great show and should be very proud of what they accomplished. WD Forte sang very strong and performed a very clean show. They earned the position they received. CR Prairie also should feel very good about themselves. It is a very entertaining show. It just so happens that on this night, it was the 4th place show.

Judging is very subjective, but that's why we have the competitions and don't just award trophies based on predictions and assumptions

This is crazy. I'm remembering Davenport North's "The Big Dance" where West Delaware was nearly 75 points behind Prairie in prelims...

Ok. So the first thing you need to know is Marion converts judge's points into rankings, and uses a consensus system.

In day round CR Washington was 1st in points- I believe 8.5 in front of Prairie and 17 in front of Holmen. West Delaware was 2nd in points, about 2.5 behind Washington. Focal Point was two points ahead of Celebration.

Rankings were a different story.

Both West Delaware and CR Washington had rankings of 1 2 3.
CR Prairie had rankings of 2 3 4.
Holmen had rankings of 1 4 4.
Focal Point had 5 5 7. Celebration had 6 6 8.

It was listed that Washington was 1st in prelims on the score sheet. After thinking about it, I feel like West Delaware would win the tiebreaker and be 1st in prelims, considering they had two judges rank them above Washington. Prairie and Holmen were also tied after prelims. I don't know what the tiebreaker on them would be, but I believe Prairie had the consensus of 2 judges over Holmen.

FINALS

Directors were only given final rankings

June Schmidt-

1st- West Delaware
2nd- Holmen
3rd- CR Washington
4th- CR Prairie
5th- Focal Point
6th- Celebration

Andrew Jacobson-

1st- Holmen
2nd- CR Washington
3rd- West Delaware
4th- CR Prairie
5th- Celebration
6th- Focal Point

Melissa Eklund-

1st- Holmen
2nd- CR Washington
3rd- CR Prairie
4th- West Delaware
5th- Celebration
6th- Focal Point

Dan Dyrland-

1st- West Delaware
2nd- Holmen
3rd- CR Washington
4th- CR Prairie
5th- Celebration
6th- Focal Point

So consensus rankings:

Holmen and West Delaware both had two 1st rankings. So their other rankings were: Holmen- 2 2. West Delaware 3 4. Holmen is the winner.

So we take Holmen's placings out and see how the other groups go head to head.

CR Washington- 1 1 2 2
West Delaware- 1 1 2 3
CR Prairie- 2 3 3 3

Washington gets 2nd place.

To be honest, we were totally confused, and we went to the Marion directors asking why West Delaware's 9 rankings points didn't beat Momentum's 10 ranking points. West Delaware was effectively tied for 1st place the entire day. I have no idea what the actual points were. They were not given out, but I would totally be interested to see them! It was clearly a really, really close competition.

Congrats to Holmen. To see your own reactions to your phenomenal performance was really amazing. We could tell you all left your hearts onstage, and that is what a Grand Champion does

Really weird, i'm not gonna lie. I'm sure WD Forte has some really awesome kids and their show is great but to not even come close to these groups at other competitions this year, and then beat prairie... That just doesn't seem real.

Great day of show choir yesterday! Shout out to the Marion hosts for being so nice and friendly throughout the entire day. Welcoming Sono Con Moto to the show choir competition world had to be by far the highlight of my day! Upset I didn't get to see Wash for either of their performances but hey thats what they have DVDs for! Congrats to Holmen!

Rumor has it that West Delaware was tied with Wash for first overall in the daytime, I'm not sure if it's true but that's what I heard from a third party. Also in the daytime, Prairie was 8 points behind Wash and Holmen was a good chunk of points behind Prairie.

If anyone has scores from the day, specifically finals, you should definitely post them *cough* Jay *cough*

While the results surprised me as they did others, its not that hard to understand why it happened. Show Choir is an extremely subjective event, and when prairie chooses to do the style of show they do, they run the risk of coming across a group of judges such as they did here that believe their style of show isn't as effective as some other styles of shows. This is in no way meant to knock prairie, they are a very talented group of kids and their success shows that. Congrats to all the groups that competed, it was a fun competition to watch.

Congrats to Holmen Omg make Wisconsin proud! But also confused on why the placements shifted so much and why Prairie got 3RU... Oh well, that's show choir I guess!

I remember seeing Holmen at Onalaska and being REALLY impressed with their show. After having a nice chat with a mom from their group I remember saying "you guys are going to do great things this season. Definitely a grand champion worthy show."

So cool to see them do it at Marion with high caliber groups! Congrats Holmen!
