linn mar- that stinks, I didn't get to see your show but I will at davenport, I hope things turn out better for you there. Heard it was the first time in 10 years you didn't make finals

I didn't see the show yesterday, but I thought based on Viterbo and expected improvement over the course of a month that 10th Street would be in for sure! Still, Alex, you're off with the 10 year number - can't forget about Onalaska 2004 (the only example I know of. Not sure if there are more)

Just a couple thoughts on the day:

First and foremost, Congrats! Jeff you guys earned it. Thers no doubt about it, from the moment you guys started that show it was high energy hit you in the face fun! I could tell you guys were havin a bast. Idk who the guy is that's front and center in the opener, but damn! U got some skills! The staging was really well done and the show was very creative. I def saw antwon's stuff in there. Kudos to him, some of his best stuff. It did help you guys nailed it. The only thing I didn't like was the jail bars. They were really distracting while u guys were dancing, a lot like the stars from last year.

Btw, let me be the next to say welcome back.

The scoring issue, although it sucked. They handled it really well. Ha that's 2 years in a row where they've had to regive trophies.

Lastly, I wish every compitition did viterbos rule that if u went last in prelims u can't go first in finals. I'm not bitter I'm just saying what if. It's always more accurate if u get to see the groups head to head. But life happens and u just gotta role with the punches.

Congrats to everybody!

To give my thoughts about the day
Jeff- great show, I saw your first performance and it was much improved, it makes me feel a bit better losing to a group that is actually good

Iowa city-love your vocals, choreo is good but good show glad you got 3rd

glenwood- wow I swore you were gonna make finals, it was all just so surprising in a good way. Loved your choreo but vocals were a bit down, what a surprise though, great show and good luck rest of the season

linn mar- that stinks, I didn't get to see your show but I will at davenport, I hope things turn out better for you there. Heard it was the first time in 10 years you didn't make finals

Sioux city east- didn't get to see your show this year but loved it last year, I will see you at fame though

Lincoln- saw your show for the second time, improved since muscatine, love the opener, and the last chord of the ballad

I thought i saw some glitter flying around... must have been from some dresses through out the day.

wow.... SCC just deleted my long post. so I will make this one much shorter than the last.

Ovation, I LOVED YOUR SHOW! WSD, you need to cheer for your prep group when they perform. The audience was completely dead, and unfortunately I think that negatively impacted your scores. Too bad, because I thought you were hands down the best prep group of the day.

Linn-Mar "In-Step"- You guys have returned to the glory years. Great show. BEAUTIFUL dresses. Wonderful.

Iowa City West "Showtime"- I thought you guys had far and away the best vocals of the prep groups I saw. Balanced, lovely. I was sad that you did not win that caption.

Xuberance- This was not a good show. Sorry. I saw both performances at Muscatine, and this did not live up to them. Pitch was completely off for sopranos in the opener. The vocals just didn't pop like they did at Muscatine, and your choreography was so sloppy yesterday. Congrats on the win though, I think your audience helped you out, so thank your Xhil fans!

The scoring problems are just sorta unfathomable... Is it true that a lot of scoresheets were mixed up, or was it just Sioux City East and Xhilaration? I just totally did not expect Linn-Mar to not make finals. I'm sorry, I thought their performance deserved it.

Jefferson- You are just what I've been waiting for from this program. Your show was breathtaking. The dresses and shoes were beautiful (I want your closer boots!!!) The band is back to its glory days- pitch was wonderful and it was a full sound. The staging was exquisite, perfectly executed and WONDERFUL pictures. This is the best choreography I have ever seen Antwon give. Just a remarkable show. I was screaming up in the bleachers the entire time... This is the sophistication and excitement that made me fall in love with WSD in the same exact bleachers. It's probably the only time I will get to see it all year, and it was just so so great. Thank you so much for that show.

Xhilaration- First and foremost- your vocals are beyond fantastic. I said before the season started that your vocals are what are to be remembered from your shows, and I was EXACTLY right, even if you guys didn't like hearing how I put it. The tone was very mature, and you produced the most sound of the day. Your vocals are a clear edge to anyone you will compete against. Now, this is my opinion, and please don't think i'm trying to be a Xavier hater, because I swear I was reciting I am not a Xavier hater for your show. The choreography leaves much to be desired. It is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY clean. But it is so so simple, especially in the Deep South medley and the newspaper song. The staging is clean, but not original. The show is so random, and doesn't flow. I just really don't get it. The Benton scoresheet rewards choirs for creativity and originality and difficulty, and that was 3 things I thought your show lacked. I also thought it was inappropriate to bow the Confederate, or Mississippi flag, or whatever it was. I sorta understand why you did it, but I didn't think it was appropriate. I thought it would've been a crime had you not won best vocals, but I'm not surprised to see you get 2nd. I don't really know what you can do for me when I see you at Kennedy, but I guess maybe the scoresheet will work in your favor at that competition.

Sioux City East- FIRE!!!!!! hahahah. I thought the opener lacked a little energy in finals, but after the fire everything came alive. The closer was just 500% better in finals- much more clean, better vocals, better band, better staging. I didn't get to see Iowa City West in finals, so they couldve had an excellent show and just slipped past you guys, I don't know. But I'm so glad I got to see this show, and maybe I'll get to see it again at FAME Chicago if I decide to go!

Linn-Mar... I thought your show was very solid. It wasn't deserving of winning this competition, but I thought it was more than deserving of making finals. I guess either the judges didn't see day round like I saw it, or the score mixup was bigger than just the East-Xhil mixup. Either way I was disappointed I didn't get to see you again. Great energy! So much better than the performance I saw at Supernova.

One last thing...

To whom it may concern.... Don't ask for my advice on your show and then when I give it to you completely ignore it. That is extremely immature and I don't like being crossed that way. I spent a LOT of time this past week corresponding with people about how to improve your show, and you did completely the opposite of my suggestions. It really makes me feel hurt and flabbergasted, especially when so many people around me commented on what I thought needed to be changed. I apologize for some of the word choices I used when confronting you. I should've been nicer and more PC, but then I wouldn't be myself so actually I retract my apology. You blew my words way out of proportion, and then told people that I punched you? Come on dude, you and I and everyone that knows me knows that didn't happen. I have never and honestly cannot punch people. Don't lie about me and then go crying to show choir moms. Please... grow up.

I believe he was arguing from the judge's perspective. You can't argue that knowing somebody placed first in daytimes will change your perception of them in finals...

Which is why the judges should not know the day-time placements.

First to clarify some of the 2A/3A issues. Indianola and Danville, who were originally on the schedule, dropped out. The updated schedule had Vinton-Shellsburg listed as performing in what had been Indianola's spot. Vinton-Shellsburg is a 3A group, so all four of those groups would have been judged against each other in the same category. Hope that clears things up.

Did Vinton-Shellsburg compete here as well as at North Polk today?

Anyway on to the groups. My first big thought of the day was wow for Glenwood! I thought the show was great. I had you pegged for being in finals. I hadn't genuinely enjoyed watching a show that much all season, so it was great to see - very fun.

I have just a couple of things I'd like to discuss about the day, but I will wait until later to post them, because Jefferson absolutely deserves to celebrate after this one. They put on a very good show in finals. Clearly Jefferson is well on its way to returning to some former glory. A big congrats to West Side Delegation!

PS Thanks Chris, I do have a lot of fun performing our show! I didn't see you today but I think I saw Jay's head in a crowd at one point (the hair gives it away). Hopefully at Kennedy

I have to say, personally, I like to keep things nice and simple. Drama and I don't mix well, we're not buddies.

I was VERY impressed with Jefferson's show, and if we had to lose to someone, I'm glad it was as solid of a group as Jeff. They definitely earned what they got.

Linn Mar not making finals surprised the crap out of me, though. I didn't get to see their day round performance, but I saw them at Viterbo, and nothing about their show then struck me as a show that shouldn't be performing in the night round.

I suppose the only thing that bothered me about the day was the fact that we had to go twice in a row, but these things happen, and it was really more obnoxious from a personal "holy crap I'm exhausted" standpoint than a "this is unfair" standpoint.

All in all, great show from Jefferson, and it was a good day.

And now to post about my day which was a wonderful experience!

Jay and I got there right in the morning and got nice and cozy at the top watching all the groups. We really enjoyed ourselves along with being joined by Nick!

Ovation- Wow, i loved you guys! very good show, i personally had you winning the prep division. Good sound, fun show and some pretty awesome choreography.

AND I FINALLY MET TREY

In Step- It is great to see you guys getting back to how i know you, competitive and fun! LOVED the opening green dressed. I can't wait to see you at Great River.

Xuberance- It was a good show but for me nothing stuck out. I thought they vocals lacked quite a bit personally and the choreo was a little more simple then what I was hoping for. I had you in my top 3, just did not have you winning, hopefully watching your show again at Kennedy gets me on board with it, but congrats on the win! It was a tough battle for the top prep group.

Showtime- I was REALLY surprised by you. I haven't seen you since my senior year i believe and the strides you have taken. I had you with some of the better vocals out of the prep groups today, so very good job!

Anamosa- You guys have some beautiful work for such a small choir. I really loved your dresses in the show, i do wish they were a bit more full on the bottom, but they were great dresses .Good solid show and you pumped out some great volume in that gym.

Waterloo West- WOW WOW WOW. I got chills from your ballad. I can't wait to see you in a few years, you are going to be a very solid group in Iowa, and it has been a treat to see you evolve over the years to the group you are now. good job and keep kicking some butt!

10th Street- I am so sad you guys didn't make finals. I thought you day round was really solid. I love the choreo you have this year and i find your band to be kick butt. I can't WAIT to see you at Great River and hope you kick some butt and take some names (just not Washington )

Lincoln Southwest- All the talk that Jay had up to the this competition about your opener paid off, i LOVED It. The dresses are beautiful. The day round for me was a much more solid performance. There was a guy singer that stuck out the whole day show, but in finals i could not hear it at all, blended much better. To me, your downfall at night was the band, it was too loud, it was very hard to hear you guys. But i really enjoyed the opener and closer, the middle part was hard for me to watch, and blue skies seemed really rushed and then slow. Just couldn't tell where you wanted to take it. But a good job and good show!

Souix City East- I really enjoyed the show. A little de ja vu from 06 but very well done! You have some beautiful staging and I would like to say the way you handled the Amp fire in finals was wonderful. I would like to say I was the one to start to "You're On Fire" chant. The closer int he day was very hectic and broken, but finals was smooth and the sound was just wonderful. I had you in 3rd for the finals and I can't wait to see you at FAME Chicago.

Iowa City West- Not used to this from you guys and it s a good suprise! The vocals were good as always but the show it self is what the surprise was. I loved the closer, only part for me that dragged was the "Move" part. Can't wait to see you again at Great River next week!

Xavier- I'll be honest, I didn't know what to expect when I watched your choir and I am still kinda... "meh" about it. Your show itself was good, you are very clean and sing beautiful I am just lost on the direction of the show. I can see why you've won the competitions you have won, and I will watch it again at Kennedy and hope the show grows on me a bit more. And Spencer you look like you are flat out having fun up there, I did enjoy watching you!

Cedar Rapids Jefferson- Welcome back Jefferson! JUST WONDERFUL. That opener... BAM in your face and I was in love from the start. The show just continued to blow everyone out of the water. Vocals for me went down a bit at night, but the choreo was just as good, if not even better. I think the girls part needs to be mixed up a bit, i feel it is a bit too long, but you have some great sounding girls and your blocking... is AMAZING. the white boxes gives your ballad such a beautiful look from up high. And your closer is FUN. I would have to say best closer of the year. And love those dresses. Much deserved win, great job! And again... welcome back.

It was a blast for the day, great food at the gas station down the street from the school, great venue and everything handled with class from Benton, so kudos.

And as for what happened with the scores, after the judges scored and tallied the groups, somewhere the mistake was the score sheets got put into wrong folders. When that happened, the folder was counted as the choir. Xavier and Headliners each had a score sheet from the other choir and so when corrected Xavier lost some points and Headlines gained some points. From there, Jefferson took the top spot for the day round and Xavier dropped to 2 points below them.

Headliners also had a small scoring situation where a judge scored a category as if it was out of 5 instead of out of 10. When Heath brought it to someones attention they contacted the judge to make sure they were aware how they scored, and the judge apologized and it was changed to, I believe, a 9 instead of 4.

The scoring mishap was handled with class and kudos to Benton for that.

And I did not mean to insinuate that 10th Street had asked for the recount, the news was fresh and knew there was some chaos going on.

I did some gandering and I think I've got it, Haakon. In Ethan's post, 2A/3A has the four eligible groups in one category for the chance to perform in finals. In his results he has "Vinton" listed as 3rd place, which I would assume is ACTUALLY Danville "Vocal Chords" since Vinton wasn't at Benton. If that's the case, then you would have Danville as the only 2A school as their divisional champion, and the 3A schools would be in the remaining order.

It must have been a consolidation thing, that was a little cloudy. I feel redundant, sorry boss!

I did not see a response, but Benton does have a 1A/2A and 3A category. However, for the 6th spot in the night show 3A/2A/1A are all in the same boat.

Right, but Danville High School "Vocal Chords" were listed in the 2A category (separate from 3A). Ethan posted the results from the daytime rounds as:

2A/3A:

GC: Anamosa
1RU: Union
2RU: Vinton
3RU: Williamsburg

I don't think this is the "night show" (what I assume you mean are finals?). If that's the case, why are the divisions being judged together during the daytime round?

Just to clear things up...10th Street did not request a recount...they were approached by a Benton official and asked to stay while scoring issues were addressed.
