I am literally copy/pasting this from my post on January 20th, 2009:

The topic of the lack of seating comes up on these boards year after year, so bare with me those of you who have heard this a thousand times before.

For one, we at Linn-Mar love our auditorium and think it's a fabulous space for groups to perform. Unlike a gym, the acoustics are meant for performance and the sound is fabulous. Also, Supernova is one of the first competitions of the year and thus the auditorium provides groups with an opportunity to perform in a nice venue rather than a gym. An auditorium is much more like the area in which groups practice in on a day to day basis.

Also, logistically the auditorium makes so much more sense than our gym. It would be hard to get equipment and people down to the gym as it's so far away from the rest of the school. Having it in the gym would also require us to hire lighting and sound technicians while at the moment it is entirely student run.

I know it's frustrating and we've attempted to solve the problem through live feeds and numerous viewing areas.

When it boils down to it, we love and take pride in our auditorium and welcome the chance to give groups an outstanding performance space.

well there was really not a seating problem this year so this is sorta a moot point- even though there were a lot less groups than last year. the only time i had even the closest problem with finding a seat was when Protege performed right after lunch. It was pretty full then, but I was still able to find a seat pretty quickly. and i'm not gonna lie. the balcony is an AMAZING view of the stage and the whole choir.

in conclusion.... DO NOT MOVE SUPERNOVA (even though I didn't think you would)

also.... I forgot. It was REALLY REALLY difficult to understand anything Mr. Anderson or Mrs Schmidt said during the awards ceremonies. The echoes just muddied up the sound, so i didnt know if there was any way to fix that for next year.

This is what I don't understand then-- why not figure out the day for Supernova and then ask the conference to schedule an away game for that particular Friday night. It's not like it damages the team at all--they still have the same number of home and away games, they just happen to be playing at another school (say, CR Jefferson) for that particular night.

I'm sure that's what Monona Grove, Milton, Fort Atkinson, etc, do.

Check that: it's pretty blatantly obvious that Sauk Prairie had a game on the night before their invitational, but moved it to Thursday, and Monona Grove had a game the day of their invitational, and moved it to the following Tuesday.

But a lot of kids probably work Friday and Saturday nights; moving a game would actually allow them to see a game they wouldn't ordinarily see.

For the conference that Linn-Mar plays in (and Xavier as well), Tuesday and Friday are the big basketball nights. Schedules work out so that one school plays the other for both girls' and boys' on the same night. For example, if Linn-Mar played Xavier on Friday, the boys game would be at Linn-Mar, and the girls at Xavier. It makes more difficult to schedule just an away game.

With that said, I still think it is possible to set up a stage in the gym following a basketball game on Friday. It would be pretty difficult... but they could do it.

As far as Linn-Mar goes, even though they are one of the best schools in the nation when it comes to supporting the arts, basketball will always win there. They have been the best team in the state for who knows how long. That gym for Supernova in finals was empty compared to what they get for basketball games. Sadly, if it comes between basketball and show choir, Linn-Mar will always choose basketball.

Sounds like this was a great competition! Cedar Rapids Washington I'm looking forward to your version of "Jai Ho". If I got this right Waukee, Lewis Central, and you have the same closer this year.

I will definitely pass this along to DK. That is what Washington show choir is about, not arm movements pointing to the side and up and walking around to make different formations. It's about heart, and performing because we love it, and not being exactly like every other show choir (and they all looked the same yesterday). Thank you so much for the positive comments!

How could anyone watch that finals round and think of any of those shows as looking the same? Casting Momentum as the one group that was so "different" and presumably more interesting/innovative/creative than the others is just not a credible position. Sioux Falls's show was the "blandest" of the night, but it should have been. New young director in a developing program. Each of the other five shows were completely different from each other, and each had something in it that was unique. Each of those shows had a different point of view and were all very entertaining.

I love the criticism about every other show looking the same coming from someone associated with a group that performed a ballad the group has performed in at least one prior competition show. How many years have we heard that song from Momentum, two or three? I have no problem with people advocating for their own group, but don't cast the likes of Totino, Bemidji, Urbandale and Kennedy as groups that are all the same and just move from one picture to another pointing up and down. It diminishes you. Momentum did a fine job yesterday and deserves applause. But if one is comparing turn around stories, the Totino story is much more stunning than Momentum's. Now which show was Totino again? I can hardly remember. All the shows looked the same.

i also agree that it is time to move it to the gym. other competitions have basketball games the night before and still get it done.

are you serious? have you ever set up for a show choir competition?

Wash's crew takes an entire day to set up the stage, the risers, the judges platforms, the lighting system, the sound system, the camera system. and then we have to have a group perform on each stage to make sure lighting and sound is fair for the first group. To do ALL that between 10ish pm and 8ish am is ridiculous. Not to mention the gym is COMPLETELY across the school from any kind of warm-up space... It would be a logistical nightmare...

well i guess youre right
ive helped set up stage and jugdes panel but thats it.

just WOW. What a day!

Bemidji- I liked the show! My favorite part was the girl song, what is the name of it? i've heard it on some movies and love it! The balloons looked like they were causing some issues in the opener so i hope that gets fixed. Great theme, and unlike some themes you see every year... you guys ALWAYS pill it off. Vocals were a little weak (to me) BUT your choreo was just great!!!

Here's the story about the balloons... only once or twice in practices had anyone really hit one of the strings, however, as soon as the opener started in per-lims I knew right away there were going to be some issues, when I asked the kids about what happened, they said it was the circulations fans or something on stage or above, so the balloons were moving around WAY more than they normally did. I was really proud of the two kids who literally got wrapped up in them and had to do their best to get out gracefully!
You just never know how things will go at each comp!

So? make it mandatory for all group member, band and crew to help set up. it`d be done in no time.

last year seating was hell

So, one last post for me in this topic, but I have always been a lover of Totino-grace. They blew my mind and were my favorite show. But, if I had to pick a second favorite, it would MOST DEF be Cedar Rapids Washington. WOW!! I absolutely loved you guys! Your show was just so energetic and fun and wonderful! loved it!!
P.S. The guy in the very front center during the yaleo song(i think the second number) was sooo cute, as far as facials go, and looks. There was one other really good looking guy too! He had shortish, darkish, curlyish hair and during JAi Ho, he was on stage left and then slowly made his way across to stage rightish in the front. So cute! Sorry. Lol. I just had to throw that in there!!

One reason they cannot do it in the gym- there is always a basketball game there the night before. And the seating was only really bad when a Kennedy or Wash school went in day round, otherwise I thought finals was nicely, but not overly packed. Maybe that's just because I picked a seat right away, and never left it.

Day after thoughts:

This is just an opinion, but I thought overall, prep and varsity, Washington High School had sooo much more heart and energy than Kennedy and Urbandale. This is based off the day round. Washington made me want to get up there and perform with them! They looked like they were having fun, not just repeating what they were told to do. I am so excited I'm going to Fab Five just to see how much they improve by the end of the year.

On behalf of the rest of Mo just wanna say thanks, that's really all we could ask for. As long as we can entertain you like that, we're happy wherever we get placed and that's kinda the momentum philosophy i suppose

Totino Grace....WOW! That's all I can say. From the first chord they hit it is pure power without over singing. I keep telling people you have to see the show, there is just no explaining it. In their introduction I heard they are going to be performing on a Caribbean cruise and I was really confused. Then I saw the show and understood. They look and sound sooo professional and clean, but not fake. CONGRATS! Can't wait to see you again!

washington momentum actually performs at fab five on feb 7th

Does anyone else think Linn-Mar has the most massively confusing school ever?

Also, while their auditorium is super nice, its time to move it to their gym (which is also crazy nice).

I went to Linn-Mar for elementary and middle school, and have been back for numerous choir and orchestra events, and i STILL cannot make my way around that school.

One reason they cannot do it in the gym- there is always a basketball game there the night before. And the seating was only really bad when a Kennedy or Wash school went in day round, otherwise I thought finals was nicely, but not overly packed. Maybe that's just because I picked a seat right away, and never left it.

I forgot one thing.... Shout Out to the Bemidji mom who gave me a Starbucks instant coffee packet. You were very cool and I enjoyed chatting with you. Another shout out to the Linn-Mar mom, who sat next to me the second half of the prelims. Also, very very nice to talk with you! It's so much fun being a spectator and sitting with parents and hearing their opinions.
