Thanks for the results! Nice work tonight, Pella!

Did Hudson MS not end up attending?

Hudson MS was 3rd in the MS class during the day. Only the top 2 MS groups perform again in finals. Daytime MS placings were 1st: Pella; 2nd Hampton Dumont; and 3rd: Hudson.

Pella versus Heelan. Two of the most consistent 3A Iowa choirs. Wish I could have seen that. Congratulations to Pella on taking GC!

I wanted to throw out a huge congrats to Emmetsburg. They underwent a director change after one of the kindest, most genuine people in the entire world, Mr. Fog, decided to retire his loooong-held post, and they also lost quite a bit of great talent to graduation. Yet here they are in a new competition season racking up solid finishes! Emmetsburg is, historically, one of the best 2A show choirs in Iowa and it is great to see the tradition continue. Looks like they definitely made a great hire to take over director. Great job, Emmetsburg!

Yes, thank you very much Ethan! Mr. Palu and I are thoroughly enjoying Emmetsburg and the great students that we get to work with. Mr. Fog give us a lot of great advice and helps us through when we have questions! We are blessed to be working here.

Thanks, Ethan! Mr. Miller and I have been extremely lucky for the opportunity to work with such great kids in such a supportive community. Dave definitely built an amazing program with great tradition here, and we are having a blast working with this group to keep that tradition of excellence going! They know they haven't reached their full potential yet, either, and continue to grow immensely each week, so we can't wait to see where they end up by the end of the season!

Thanks for all the results. Out of curiosity, were these all for varsity or did they give best soloists for the mixed AND prep divisions?

They decided to give 2 male and 2 female awards, all from the open divisions. The Emmetsburg students that received awards are Michael Woodruff and Emily Schmidt, our ballad soloists/duet!

2. Out of curiosity, why do some Iowa competitions combine 1A/2A while others have them as stand alone divisions? Just when I think I understand Iowa divisions...

A lot of this probably has to do with how many 1A and 2A groups come to a competition.

For example, if you only have four 1A and 2A groups combined, like you do here, it doesn't really make sense to have separate classes for them, especially if you would happen to separate them into different classes and three of the groups would be 2A and only one group would be 1A. It's just easier to make them one collective class.

However, at some competitions in Iowa, you will have higher numbers of groups in each class, such as 5+ 1A groups AND 5+ 2A groups, which then it makes more sense to have two different classes instead of having a 10+ super group 1A/2A class.

And some competitions just do what they do regardless because it's how they've always done it. But I'm guessing that how many 1A groups and how many 2A groups that attend annually is a big reason for this.

"Rhythm in Red" is now known as "Revelation" and "Luminosity" is a new women's group. "Infinity" is the middle school show choir.

Wonderful, thank you!

Thanks for the schedule! A couple notes...

1. Did Dallas Center-Grimes change their show choir name? Who are "Revelation", "Infinity", and "Luminosity"? I'm guessing not all of them are show choirs, but I don't see "Rhythm in Red" on the schedule and that's what they have formerly been known by.

3. Seems like every year Iowa continues to grow! Looks like Van Meter is one of the new faces this year!
