what can i say?  you've got to change with the times.  and besides, the group gets a new show every year, so why would this year be such a big transition?  shouldn't they have something fresh every year?  and it wasn't just their show that i didn't like.  i thought their band needed to play out more, and i hardly got any energy from them at all.  hopefully they will be able to use some of the judges' comments and step up their game!

They do have a new show every year obivously, but they have just had the tradition in the past of focusing on sharp choreography and clean strong vocals, not a large focus on props or costumes. That's what i mean. The group does get new songs every year, but to change your whole style from what it used to be to what the judges are looking for is usually a little difficult. But you are right, you gotta change with the times, but I'm just sayin don't sell some groups short becuase of the prop and costume issues.

well, the thing is with Jefferson is that they are kind of in transition, so some of their stuff is the older style and some is newer.  Since the judging has changed the past few years, they've had to adapt their shows.  It used to be that the judging did not consist of a costume change and prop usage area.  Now if if you don't use one of those it seriously hurts your show.  It's just a major change for the directors to do now so the old great Jefferson shows are in a transition to ensure that they will stay very competitive with groups like Totino.  But it's kind of sad that a group has to change from their own unique style to fit what everyone else is doing just to ensure that they will still be able to win a few competitions.  I personally like the classical style, with a mix of new upbeat songs.

ok, i agree with almost everything that you said jill. i especially agree with the comment about jefferson. I had heard a lot of talk about them, so i was expecting to be blown away with awesome vocals and clean and difficult choreography. However, while the vocals were good, the selections weren't exactly difficult, and i wasn't blown away. As for the choreography, it was very clean, but, again, not exactly difficult. It was really hard to get into the show. I sensed almost no energy, and i wish some of the songs were a little faster, more upbeat.
however, i must disagree about GISH's show. I was their host, and the excitement that they felt really showed through in their show. i felt that they and GI northwest had the best audience reaction (not including traveling support groups). They really wanted to do well, and I heard throughout the day that this was their favorite competition. they really stepped it up for finals because they wanted to do well. I felt that they used this motivation to do extremely well, and i think that they deserved their placement, not just on emotion, but on pure talent, energy, and execution, not to mention some of the best diction i've heard.

I agree with almost everything Jill said, especially about Mitchell, your show was awesome. On a little sidenote, Mitchell parents might want to try to be a little nicer. During the daytime performance some of my friends were sitting on the edge of the center section of seating and one of the moms was extremely rude about "asking us to move." I mean obviously parents should get the best seating to watch their kids, but the mom said, "Hilary (like she knew my friend...?) you guys need to move." It was extremely rude. A "Hi I'm a Mitchell parent, could you move so I can watch my son/daughter perform?" would have been fine. ANYWAYS yeah I thought Mitchell was going to be/should have been placed way higher. I also thought Millard West did a great job and should have beat out Pius X. Okay now that the criticism is done...that was one of the funnest(that a word?) days I've ever had. Like Jill said, it seemed to me like everyone just wanted to have a good time, and we did have a really good time, like everyone in the audience shaking their booty...I liked that I can't wait for next year's!

WOOHOO what a blast I had this past weekend! We all had a great time!
Jill I got to meet you , even though I am a loser and couldn't think of anything else to say to you except HI IM DEREK! Anyways we were just glad to make finals!!! I love the suspension when they annouce (sp) finals!

There were a lot of good groups there, and I personally think the battle of the boy bands group should have won. I think they were GINW 14 karat gold. I can agree with you Choirnerd, I wasn't a big fan of Bloomington Jeff, but I did like their whole old school vs. new school. I don't know if that is what they were going for haha but that is what i got from it. I didn't get to see Millard West but I did watch them on the TV and they looked good from what I could see. I was also very suprize that Westwood didn't make fianls from other people that I heard they were pretty good. Ok some other groups... I didn't see GISH so I can't say anything about them nor did I see Pius X, but Lewis Central was good. Its kinda werid when they got GC my friend and I were like in the middle of the group on the floor, and it was like a huge mosh pit, it was crazy. Anyways I had fun this weekend and Omaha is great just like always you run such a good competition.

yeah, unfortunately we don't give caption awards. i'm not sure why, but we don't. it's getting more competitive every year, which makes me really happy! i hope everyone reading this topic thinks about coming to the westside competition of excellence next year. the more/better groups we have the better our competition becomes! and then maybe we'll be able to give out captions!

jorge, you beat me to the topic!!!  grrrr, that's the second week in a row i thought i was going to get to make the topic and didn't get to!  oh well.  alright, i'm pretty sure this is the right order:

GC:  Lewis Central
1st RU:  Grand Island Senior High
2nd RU:  Bloomington Jefferson
3rd RU:  Grand Island NW
4th RU:  Mitchell
5th RU:  Lincoln Pius X

Womens division:

1st:  Millard West
2nd:  Grand Island Senior High

i thought Mitchell had a really good show and a great performance and should have gotten at least 1st RU.  and GINW, although i didn't like any of their music, had AMAZING energy and should have been top 3.  but then again, GISH's show was really cute, too.  so i don't know, those two can duke it out for third.  i really didn't like bloomington jefferson at all, so i was really surprised they placed as highly as they did.  they completely lacked energy, their arrangements were bad and their band needed to play out more.

millard west was really disappointed in not making finals, especially since they took second last year.  i didn't get to see their show today, but i didn't really like what i saw last weekend @ UNL.  someone also told me they thought omaha north had a really good show, but i didn't see them, either.

the energy in the auditorium after finals, though, was the coolest thing ever!!!      i was working stage crew so i was on the stage and everyone was shouting at the stage crew and calling MY name and it was like one big show choir family with no rivalries or anything.  to me, not having competed, it almost seemed like no one really cared who won because everyone was having such a great time, but i'm sure that's not what it was like for everyone else. ;) it's days like this that make me really, really glad i'm in show choir!!!!!!

AWESOME!

Best Male?
Best Female?
Best Band?
Best Vocals?
Best Show?
Best Choreography?

I don't know what captions you have... but yeah.

So Omaha Westside's competition is this Saturday right?

What groups will be there?
Schedule?

STORY TIME!!! (AT FIRST YOU WILL THINK THE STORY IS POINTLESS... BUT HANG IN THERE TILL THE END)

So my mom works at Davenport West High School as a secretary right? RIGHT!
And our music director Rosalie Dunnegan has been sick for the past three days right? RIGHT!

Okay remember these facts and here is the story...
So my mom picks up the phone Tuesday... "West High School, this is Sue..."
"Yes... Could I speak to Rosalie Dunnegan???" ... "I'm sorry ma'am... But Mrs. Dunnegan is sick... can I take a message?" :AUSE:: ::FAST FOWARD THROUGH BITS OF THE CONVO::... My mom says... "Oh well my two kids are in show choir and can't wait for Showstoppers... The lady says... "GOOD! Showstoppers is going to be so much fun! The accomadations are splendid and the theatre they perform in is wonderful too!" :AUSE:: ::FAST FOWARD AGAIN THROUGH MORE BITS OF THE CONVO:: My mom said... "Oh well it is really cold here." The showstoppers lady said "Yeah, I heard you midwesterners got some snow... I am in Florida right now, but this week I haved to go to Omaha to judge a show choir competition".

My mom was talking to one of Omaha Westsides judge Susan Walldrip.
