What confused me was that I always thought that the "J" in "J-Hawk" stood for Jefferson, at least that's what I've always been told. So now, what is a J-Hawk? Seriously, I want to know what kind of bird that is...

Found this at a website from the University of Kansas...

The term "Jayhawk" was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds--the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter. The message here: Don't turn your back on this bird.

Guess that makes it a popular mascot, huh?

I gotta say I was a little confused at first when everybody on the stage was chanting "J-Hawk Power," before I remembered that both schools are the J-Hawks.

Back on topic. I was very honored to have tied with Urbandale, as I thought their show was AMAZING. I hope that you all have a fantastic end to your year, and wish you, along with all other groups, the best of luck.

First, to clarify someone's previous question, the correct procedure (which was followed) is to skip the next place down after a tie occurs. Therefore, since the tie was for first place, the next place should be third. This is because there will always be two groups that are better than the third place group, regarless of which order the first two place.

(Before I continue, let me say that I am not affiliated with ANY group ANYWHERE.)

Secondly, I think the tie should have been broken. Personally, CR Jeff should have gotten first because they won best vocals. There are any number of other ways the tie could have been broken (prelim ranks, prelim vocal scores, judges pref., etc...) The point is that groups compete for a reason. If ties aren't broken, then what is the incentive to do better? What is next, award ceremonies that say, "Everyone is a winner, goodnight!"

Finally, it is important to note that many competitions use a 100 point scale. Statisically speaking, it is likely that ties will happen again. Therefore, competitions should implement a system for breaking ties. (Obviosuly, I recommend vocal scores.)

Complete Results (from showchoir.net):

Grand Champion: Tie - Cedar Rapids Jefferson "West Side Delegation" & Urbandale "Studio 2004"

2nd Runner-up: Iowa City High "4th Avenue Jazz Company"
3rd Runner-up: Iowa City West "Good Time Company"
4th Runner-up: Council Bluffs Lewis Central "Lewis Corporation"
5th Runner-up: Anamosa "Sadie Street Singers"

Best Vocals: Cedar Rapids Jefferson

Best Choreography: Urbandale
Best Band: Cedar Rapids Jefferson

H.S. Prep
Champion: Urbandale "Vitality"
1st Runner-up: Cedar Rapids Jefferson "Ovation"
2nd Runner-up: Iowa City West "Showtime"
3rd Runner-up: Iowa City High "City Lights

I gotta say I was a little confused at first when everybody on the stage was chanting "J-Hawk Power," before I remembered that both schools are the J-Hawks.

It was a great day and I think I can speak for everybody at Urbandale when I say that it was an honor to share the stage with C.R. Jefferson's "Westside Delegation" last night.

Good luck the rest of the year, Westside!

Thank you Mr Temple, it really was an honor.

Oh and good luck to Studio for the rest of the competition season

just out of curiosity what did you guys think of Roosevelt's show?

First off I want to say great job to 4th ave! You guys did awesome with what Damon and Grove gave you. It's a hard show to put lots of energy into (except for Feel Good Time) and I know you guys put all you had into it. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see you guys at Urbandale (always a great comp.)

GTC you guys were also awesome! Great improvement from your winter show! I told you that you had a chance in finals! Your catching up to City.

I watched all the groups in Finals and it really was a toss up for GC. This is really one of those nights that it depended on who the judges were and what their mood was watching the show. Everyone was really great! Everyone should have been happy with their performance.
