I totally agree IDroveAllNight, I truely believe that Findlay deserves to win.. I think that Findlay's ballad is better than ANY BALLAD I've ever heard this year, INCLUDING "Letter's from War" I think that Classier shows are better than todays pop show. I mean granted that Pop shows are more "fun" I think that classier shows are better appealing. I too want to see these two choirs try each other's ballad as I feel that Findlay wouldn't put the facials/emotion into it AS MUCH as MTZ would, ON THE SAME TOKEN I truely believe that MTZ wouldn't be able to TOUCH Findlay's ballad. So its' all in the eye of the beholder/Judge.

Maybe you have not seen Mt. Zion show. It is not all pop. I would not call singing in the rain pop. You love Findlay. We understand that. Where are the props to the vocals. Who won vocals anyway?

Mt Zion is so popular today with the younger generation...kids love them, they are fresh and modern. Kids aren't sitting up in the judges seats, the ones handing out scores are the ones that enjoy a bit of nostalgia every once in awhile. Findlay does what they do tremendously well, and just bc it's not always appealing to our MTV/,music video-fed generation of high schoolers does not make them any less Grand Champions than they are.

I like both styles, and can see how one group could win over another any day of the week. Mt Zion could proably topple Findlay if a group of twenty-something-year-old judges were on the panel.

Who is Greece Athena, by the way? :-0

Good morning! This is a MTZ mom and we appreciate all the support we've had this year from everyone. It has been an awesome year for us. Showstopper's NYC was an incredible time for our students and we felt honored to be in such good company. Although we didn't win, we felt we did a good job but lost to a deserving group. We want to congratulate Findley for a job well done. Your show was fun to watch. Also congratulations to the soloists and choirs who competed in the finals. It is always a treat to meet parents, see soloists and choirs we might not see otherwise. Everyone was great and NYC was a terrific place to end our season. Thank you to Showstopper's for providing such a classy forum to compete in. My singer is a senior this year so I won't be traveling to comps much anymore. I will however continue read posts just to watch the progress of some of the terrific groups we have encountered this year. Thanks for all the entertainment you provide and to the parents, singers and directors-it was wonderful talking and meeting all those we encountered over the last few years. Good luck to those who still have comps left and good luck on your season next year. Good bye-Good bye-Good bye " border="0" alt="ermm.gif" />

I think I see what is happening here. I would just like to say that show choir should be judged on the way the students perform not what they perform. If a show choir is given songs by their director and choreography by their choreographer that SOME find boring, it is not their fault at all. If they go out and execute their show well, then they should be rewarded by the judges. The judges should not look for what type of show entertains them more. A LOT of people absolutely despise Andy Haines’ choreography. They say it is too boring. If someone gives that as their reason for Findlay not to win, then they are not looking for what the judges SHOULD be looking for. Picking pop songs and adding flash to your show is great but it should NEVER be what puts you over another group. Now, I know Mt. Zion is amazing this year. The little bit I saw of them on the Mundelein broadcast would let me believe that they would be in a close battle with Findlay. It just happens that Findlay came out on top. Some are acting like Findlay should have barely made finals. That is the most ridiculous load of crap I have heard on these boards.

I personally did not think Findlay was boring at all this year. Their show completely blew me away. At the end of the performance, I turned to my friend Katie and she said “I feel sorry for anyone competing against them this year.” A lot of people predicted that Findlay would win and we were right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's wrong with that?  Findlay isn't being taught much variety either then.  Show choir is about different styles.  Some choirs have all types of different songs and styles (i.e. Buffalo Grove)...  Some choirs focus more on todays music (i.e. Mt. Zion, Eisenhower)...  Some choirs focus on classy shows (i.e. Findlay, Cedar Rapids Jefferson)...  I think we just need to remember that all choirs are different.

I like that paragraph and agree 100%. I do not think people, especially the judges, should say that one style is better than the other. They are just different.

There is a lot of variety in a classy show. They close in tap. I don't think they tap the whole show. The ballad adds tons of variety. The guys song is a comedy number. I know that all choirs are different. Thank God for that. I would get sick of seeing the same type of shows over and over again. It's just that with different types of shows there comes different levels of difficulty. I know Mt. Zion dances amazingly, but how many parts can there be in Car Wash. With a pop song it is hard to add a lot of harmony. Is that there fault? No. But it does limit them to singing in a lot of unison. When the singing is that easy it gives them a lot more time to focus on things like what arm goes where and which body roll goes 1st. I didn't say there was anything wrong with them doing the everyday pop song with the Dwight Jordan stuff, but like I said before, they are only learning moves, they aren't learning the style that is needed to pull off those moves because that is what our generation has grown up watching. Learning the style of a certain type of dance is the hardest part.

I'm sure no one could do it better emotionally. Mt. Zion has awesome performers who can make the ballad seem very intense. The song is a sag song in itself, but I bet Findlay could make it sound better, and to answer your question, no I haven't seen Mt. Zion live this year, but I have seen a DVD. I know it makes a world of difference, but I watch Findlay on DVD as well. Plus, watching it live or not, I can still distinguish unison singing from parts. Mt. Zion is good at what they do, but MANY groups can pull off the type of show they are given. Findlay is one of the few show choirs around that can make oull off a classy show and make it amazing. It is a lot harder to get on the stage and do the shows they do because you have to teach our generation how to look mature and have the type of presence they have when they take the stage. Mt. Zion does our everyday pop songs with the new Dwight Jordan hip hop move added to it, which makes us teenagers excited to learn, but they aren't being taught variety. Most of them can already dance the way they do on stage, so they aren't learning anything about style, which can be the hardest thing to learn.

So... is Findlay being taught "variety" if they are doing this all classy show?

"Mt. Zion is good at what they do, but MANY groups can pull off the type of show they are given."

You are right... many groups can pull their "type of show" off... but, Mt. Zion is the best.

"Mt. Zion does our everyday pop songs with the new Dwight Jordan hip hop move added to it, which makes us teenagers excited to learn, but they aren't being taught variety."

Also... watching a DVD performance to a live performance is almost like night and day.

because the Mt. Zion I know always has weak, immature vocals. An ok guys sound with horrible girls sound. I have recordings of Mt. Zion on my computer and it is clearly unison singing.

The Mt. Zion of the past is gone. Mt. Zion 2005 is an entire new sound. Their vocals have finally overcome the awesome dancing they do. Have you seen their show live this year?

I'd like to see Findlay perform Mt. Zion's ballad...

I can't believe anyone would ever say Mt. Zion should beat Findlay in vocals. It really does boggle my mind. We really must not listen to the same choirs, because the Mt. Zion I know always has weak, immature vocals. An ok guys sound with horrible girls sound. I have recordings of Mt. Zion on my computer and it is clearly unison singing. Not the ballad, but everytime they dance it is unison, and if it isn't, it sounds horrible. Findlay is always singing in parts, and there sound is soooo much more mature. I would love Mt. Zion to try to sing Findlay's ballad. I have never been effected by a groups vocals like I have been from watching Findlay. That last note in there closer made me hit the back of my seat. I would again love to hear Mt. Zion try to pull that off. I feel bad because I hate bashing other choirs but is what these arguements have turned into.

Hey boys and girls...

About the competition... I am so proud to say that I did take a vacation to go to New York and go to this competition. I stayed down the street from the Marriot at the Crowne Plaza. Yes I saw all groups in Finals...

There is No doubt in my mind that Mt. Zion deserved Should have won..

They should have won easily... Findlay was hardly competition. I had them in 3rd. The most Boring show I have seen this year. All I can say to the judges is, Way to screw things up again!

shoulda gone like this

G.C. Mt ZIon (Choreo, General effect,) (vocal)
2nd. Greece Athena
3rd. Findlay (vocal)

Mt. Zion or Findaly could have won vocals.

judges...If you were to see a show again... who would you pick to watch?

ok let me translate what colton has been saying (cuz sometimes it is hard to understand)

mtz was AMAZING and 100% deserved to win. thats what he was trying to say. not we shouldve beaten mtz. we shouldve beaten findlay. findlay was boring and didnt deserve to win. they for SURE didnt deserve best vocals- no1 could hear them in the opener. the diction was not crisp. There was a girl front center the entire show who had no faces and kept looking down at her feet to make sure she was tapping correctly and in the right spot. okay thats not professional. findlay's "mature" tone was killed by mtz's even more mature tone. but back to the scoring issue

basically the uniqueness of the show was worth 50 out of 150 on the ensemble visual sheet. posture was another 50 points. the actual CHOREOGRAPHY judging section was worth 50 out of 150. 33% of one category. 1/12 of the entire competition score....

mtz mom's are some of the nicest moms i have met EVER!!!! thanks so much for treating wash like a 2nd family and cheering for us when we didn't have many supporters to cheer us on. The extra cheering and smiling faces helped us perform to the max thanx.

basically every1 was good. every1 was great. it all depends on what you like at showstoppers, not really the actual technique (i site chicago last year again)

I'm a gonna have to say that I think it very strange, I have been on the phone with several different people and all I heard was how boring of a show Findlays was and how its "General effect" was to put the crowd asleep. and how MTZ had most of the crowd on their feet. Hmmmmmm Best visual and Vocal.... sounds shady to me... I know that I am now gonna get a tape of Findlay... I heard a lot about Desks... we will see.
