I certainly think that South Jones can compete with Mt. Zion. Beat them... uh... maybe?

graduating 1/3 of the group is not that much at all... we lost that much in Momentum and this year looks to be one of our strongest in a while.

I know Mt. Zion graduated many seniors, but normally no matter how bad their vocals have been, by their last, normally national competition, they are amazing in every aspect of their show. Orlando is in late March, which give them a good couple of weeks for Mt. Zion to be practicing their show, which I'm sure they will be.

South Jones also graduated about 1/3 of their group. South Jones is a great group, and they are probably the most entertaining year in and year out in the South, but last year was also one of the years for South Jones that Mt. Zion had.

and for all we know Tarpon springs could have struck a gold mine, and might have found the perfect show, people, choreography, etc.... You just will NEVER know.

How long have you been watching Mt. Zion- if long enough, you'll know that last year was one of a few amazing years they've had. Last year they were senior heavy, and they graduated somewhere near 40 seniors. Not saying that it couldn't happen, but if you look at Mt. Zions history, they have a history lacking of vocals, and strong in choreography, but with a non experienced group, I personally think that lacking of vocals will come back. They were absolutely amazing last year, perfect in every aspect, show, vocals, choreography, even band! However, I think this next year won't be as amazing. Mt. Zion was amazing last year, but that mean their going to be amazing this year? I don't think so. South Jones, on the other hand, has been fairly consistent for the last few years, excelling in showmanship and choreography. Their vocals are turning great. Their band, phenominal. I think you need to take into consideration previous histories of the group, and the fact that it's a new year, we all know anything can happen.

I agree, I think South Jones is very good, but NO WHERE NEAR mtz. So i feel pretty confident in my prediction of mtz sweeping. the only way they wouldn't is if the judges decide to pass out "consolation" awards to others so that at a small competition its not a giant landslide. i've heard they do that sometimes. i know it happend to us when i was in new score dry.gif

South Jones does get stronger each year, but they are still aren't in the same league as Mt. Zion. The only caption I could see South Jones winning is band, or if they have it, Best Diction, which I only think FAME has so probably not.

Not to mention that South Jones has been very good the last couple of years and seems to get better each year. So to say that Mt. Zion will sweep all the awards in a walk is a pretty strong statement.

I dont think Edgewood is going anymore, I think they signed up for FAME New York -- can anyone confirm this from Warehouse? And I think the "Jones" group is iffy at best. So again, I can only put three groups there. But hey what do I know --- Im just a college kid in Illinois.

Seriously...where do you get your information?

"the Jones group" as you call them is most definately going....

and Clinton is hosting the competition, as well as SCN Nashville

SmithCotton is in Missouri, they are the first two Grnad Champions of the show choir cup in Branson. Additionally they compete at Troy, P-Hill and mostly in state, but have in recent years under new direction started getting further out of state. This year I think they are headed to Petal.

Has there EVER been a "Nationals" for show choir? Not really.

Are the three companies that provide "National" competitions doing us some sort of disservice by offering competitions and festivals in many different locations each season? Not at all- it's still an opportunity to perform, in venues that are rivaled by FEW high school competition venues. More often than not, it's also an opportunity for groups to compete against other groups they do not see otherwise. It's an opportunity to make friends with groups from across the country. "National" competitions are also a really fun way to turn a competition into a vacation that you can take with your entire show choir, and many of your fans. I don't think multiple national competitions has hurt show choir as an artform or as a competitive outlet.

Until show choir has a standarized scoring system, I don't think there will even be an opportunity for there to be a true national competition.

Even if we did have a national competition, would we as a community accept the system and congratulate our national champion show choir? Doubtful ;) ... we like debating competitions too much.

yeah, true. There should only be one venue, but it was really bound to happen lol.

So the same company is doing two competitions, two different locations, two different line-ups, and calling them both "Nationals?" Doesn't sound like either really will be, then.

I'm kind of under the impression the only rumor about SCN in Orlando cancelling was started by the title of this thread...

I think it's cool that SCN is expanding- it's great to have options for groups wanting to travel outside of their area! Most competitions start smaller and get bigger with a strong reputation- SCN is probably no exception to that.

pretty sure you heard wrong. the orlando competition is still on. the following groups are said to be going to the show.

Mt. Zion
Edgewood
South Jones
Seminole
Tarpon Springs

...and possibly a couple more groups. besides, nationals wouldn't have to cancel its show for mt. zion to compete against petal, etc. Mt. Zion could go and compete at fame if the wished to do so.

I heard Attache may be hosting the show as well. And now that I think about it, when Fame had its first competition in Orlando there were only 3 groups competing.

Who does Smith Cotton compete against? Just wondering...I have never heard of your group.

im serious --- i think thats it...plus its not even confirmed that the two florida groups are coming --- can anyone else post some other groups going? I only know what I heard, but I think its gonna sink.

yeah i guess i heard that south (or was it west?) jones is considering it ---- but still, that only makes mtz, south (west?) jones (if they come) and then these other two florida groups (if they come) ----- and lets face it, i think thats not much of a competition. I feel safe to say now that MTZ could "mark" their show and still walk away with GC and every caption. The jones school will get 2nd, and then the only battle for placement will be between these two florida schools for third and fourth place. I really thought MTZ was more interested in having quality groups to go up against. I think they shoud go up against PETAL at the FAME Orlando competition --- I would LOVE to see that one!!! I read that Onalaksa is going to showstoppers florida so maybe they could go there too. I dunno --- " border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> Anyone know the full list at FAME Orlando or Showstoppers?

I have heard that a group from Mississipi is supposed to be going to show choir Nationals in Orlando. If that true maybe its just a rumour that they are thinking about canceling.

I mean the guy that runs the nashville competition that is now trying to start one in Orlando ---- I hear there are only three groups. It's Mount Zion and two little groups from Florida. Thats it. I think they should cancel so MTZ can go compete against some real competitors like Petal at FAME Orlando.
