Yeah, about that...

Sound FX and Highlights went to the Music City Show Shoppe last year at Belmont University in Nashville. Highlights won first in their division. Sound FX made it to the finals, but our show was sooo different than the other schools that were there. It's just a more "cymbally" explosive sound than many Virginia schools have.

And I've noticed:

Midwest = Rock

East = Broadway

You couldnt be more wrong... Midwest does TONS of broadway. Have you not seen the Manchester replicas... Findlay, Huntington North...etc... and Have you ever seen all the choirs in IOWA? Look and Lacrosse GCS! And even groups like MtZion and Dekalb are doing broadway numbers in their upbeat shows. Southern and Midwest groups just know how to MIX styles, how to have a diverse show. The truth is that East Coast just doesnt have as good Choreographers and Bands. Those 2 elements have to work together to make the OVERALL EFFECT shoot through and there isnt a single East Coast Group who does it correctly. And your show (song selections) weren't that different than the other groups... read what I just wrote.

Here's my edit: An example of a group that has everything BUT a good show (song selection) would be Clinton 06-07 and they still won everywhere. had to throw that in there cause I felt like watching their show this year was like watching their Fall Revue, its good, but I cant wait for them to turn it on...

Actually the majority of the east, I've seen anyways, does alot of songs I've never heard of. That's good, because it exposes me to that. I love hearing new stuff. Whether it be broadway, jazz, etc...

I agree about the differences in areas. i was really shocked when I started watching show choirs on youtube, only to see how different they were from this area. The first one I searched was Clinton, of course, and I was like...okay...not what I was expecting, but great. I thinks it's cool about the differences between different areas. I think show choirs already have a tendancy to start loking alike after awhile...so these differences are refreshing in my opinion.

Yeah, you guys were really good last year (Hanover) at the Belmont competition, and I encourage you, as well as other groups from Virginia to keep crossing over the line and "raising the bar" so to speak, of expectations. I grow tired of people coming up to me and acting surprised that Virginia even has show choirs, or that all they know of is Manchester. We have a lot of talent down there, not just the big Virignia show choirs either, I mean all the show choirs. I know that finances play a large factor in this, but it would be nice to see some of the choirs up there in Virginia compete all over the place than in just central Virginia...We definately have potential to make a name for ourselves (the state). ;)

Honestly, we (Menchville) have no business going to something like that. However, there are some great show choirs in VA that should take a stab at it. I have watched some of the show choirs that go to FAME on youtube, and I think we have a few that could hold their own. Virginia's style is much different, IMO, than what I have seen from many other areas. I think we, (Virginia, not Menchville), have a tendency to a slightly operatic type of sound, which I find to just be different than what i hear from other areas. I like it, but I'm not sure how that would go over...

I say go for it.

So um...I would really like to see more Virginia choirs take that extra step and compete in a competition like Nationals or Fame. It would be good for you guys to see what else goes on in different sides of the country, and honestly, how great other choirs are and to learn from them and the experience. ;)

So how about that girl who MC'd on Friday?! She was pretty awesome in my personal opinion. (Supposed to be Saturday too...but we've been having family issues)

Yeah, Kristin is our choreographer, and she is nothing short of a perfectionist. She's very dedicated, though. She will spend days and days on a song to perfect it and constantly change things if she doesn't like them and will make us run the particular section with blades, then with open, then with thrash, then with fists and so on. We don't even repeat choreography if words or choruses repeat in a show. She's a really good choreographer. Bust so much work...

We just finished listening to our tapes, and I have one thing to say:

Loving Kristen Mancini=me

She was one of the best judges we've ever had. When she gave constructive criticisms, it was just that...CONSTRUCTIVE. The whole point is to learn from these experiences. Her tape was just the sort of thing I want to get when I get my envelope back.

I loved all the judges, but this one really stood out. And she gave us the lowest score!

Huge applause to Hanover and Lee Davis on judges. I loved the compliments and criticisms we got. It was very educational and well worth the time. We would love to come back next year.

Actually, I loved all the competitions we went to this year...even the one where we were dead last. I just didn't like the results of that one...lol.

What, teach somewhere else, or share your secrets?

Totally respected, of course. If I had it all figured out, I'm not sure I'd share all my secrets with everyone either.

haha. it's not that important. plus, we don't have everything figured out. well. lol

Wow show choir has changed a lot just from last year, but im so glad i got to see everyone. Congrats to my UK, 'Gales, and Knight Scene. I though you all lived up to my standards lol.

I am also so proud of Menchville. I have seen you now for four years in a row and each year your group has gotten stronger and stronger. I know that you were so happy and proud of your kids. I think that your group is heading in the right direction. Haha i stood up ans cheered when they said superior. Your kids are always the nicest and came up to me in the past and congratulated me.

Well anyways it was good to see the groups good luck to everyone who has more comps and hopefully if i ever graduate i will be out there teaching someday.

Muah! Thank you so much. We have worked our tails off. This is only my third year, so if you saw them four years ago, that director was let go in the middle of the year, and I'm sure any performance he forced them to give was scary...lol. They still talk about that year.

I'm glad to hear my kids are nice to you. I'm very much a stickler that they are polite to EVERYONE. I'd be a fool to say that we don't talk about things we shouldn't, but it's a standing rule that that sort of talk is kept til we're on our way home and the bus has started rolling. And even then, most of our frustration has been about getting stomped religiously by a certain new and deserving show choir.

Getting our first superior was a surreal experience.We had made some mistakes, and I really didn't think it was our day. I was absolutely shocked. While I was walking around work today, evveryone kept congratulating me, and I was smiling like such a huge goofus. it felt really great, though.

We're no Richmond school, but you are welcome to come student teach at MENCHVILLE! You have to tell us all you Thomas Dale secrets, though.
