Girls Division was Petal....West Jones.....Homewood!

I would just like to say thanks to all who rooted for us! Everybody did a great job!! We were more than a little dissappointed, BUT..that was last week and we look forward to PRCC this weekend!

Thanks to Candace and Charles from Long Beach who came up to us outside and talked with us about the competition....I believe you are right Charles!!! I look forward to seeing you this weekend!

As for the competition, I thought Mr. Mizell and the staff put on a great comp for the 1st time! There were some problems, but that is to be expected! The sound was a bit of a problem at the start Fri night for the middle schools, but somebody was finally allowed to go up there and help and it was pretty decent Sat night. They have a great system and with a little bug work it will be fine.

West Jones...Great Job! I am VERY Proud of you! You deserved to make finals!

Long Beach...I really enjoyed your show and I look forward to seeing y'all for the next couple of weeks!

Homewood...I missed both shows, but my wife said it was a great show...I look forward to seeing y'all Sat at PRCC.

Albertville...Congratulations is all I can say.

South Jones...You are Grand Champions to us! All I can say is PRCC is next...Go Get 'um!!!

Cody McDonald...Mr. Solo Champion!! I am sorry about the monitors not working for the start of your solo...thought they were loud enough! You were very poised and did the right thing in stopping and asking to start over...it will not happen again sir!

To ALL of the crew people from all over...I really enjoy talking to all of you at the competitions...we talk each year like we have been old friends and are always glad to help each other if needed! That is awesome! I will be there each and every week...if you need me just hollar and the South Jones COMPANY CREW will be there to help because remember....

"THEY LOOK GOOD BECAUSE OF US!"
See Yall Soon!

Cody, that sounded like a pretty uneventful day to be ;) hehehe. Just kidding, and congrats on the solo award.

Well, Cody, at least your microphone worked during your solo....which was very good, I might add; the bottom of my microphone suddenly began to unscrew, and I was unsure how I should respond to that, so I just laid that son of a gun down and immediately transferred to another microphone. But your solo was excellent, even though I didn't know the words....haha....

Cody's Day @ Picayune in a Very, Very, Very Large Nutshell:

I drove ahead of our group (accompanied by my wonderful sweetie, LeeAnne ), in an effort to be able to see both Northeast and West Jones, arriving just before 2:00pm. I had been told that I wouldn't sing in solo competition until after we performed, which was round 5:00pm.

Upon my arrival, a group parent of ours told me that it had been changed, and I was supposed to sing at 2:00pm...as it was 1:57pm at the time. I freaked. No. I REALLY freaked. I had no clue whatsoever where anything was, much less where my director was, and I was going to miss my first chance to compete this year. Thankfully, some other people who knew my director were able to help me follow the trail he'd just been, and catch up to him.

So I get to Mr. Mac, who takes me to the building I'm supposed to be at...and I just hafta sing. No warm-ups, nothing. "Just wing it, you'll do fine," LeeAnne said.

When I got in the room to sing, they couldn't close the doors to the room, because they would lock if we did, and wouldn't be able to be opened, as the only person who had a key was the teacher to the room. So I sang with the doors open (as did everyone else). Well, while I was trying to sing, there were a few members from "anonymous group" outside making ALOT of noise, and making it hard to hear my music and concentrate, so I was really getting frustrated. But, I did finish my song, warm-upless; I wasn't too pleased with my performance, but I shrugged it off, and headed back to the auditorium to watch West Jones.

Well, when it came time for our choir to warm-up, I got into a little tizzy with another person in our group (not LeeAnne though), which kinda stressed me out a little bit.

Eventually we set our stuff on the stage for prelims, where I ran into more trouble. I tried to open up my garment bag to set my clothes, but the zipper was as jammed as it could be. I tugged as hard as I could, until I broke it. I had to rip my garment bag in half through the hole at the top to get my clothes out. Great day so far.

At the beginning of our girls number, 6 guys dance around our female soloist, and I'm one of those lucky 6. Well, I was absolutely absent-minded, and just spun my way right off the stage, leaving at the beginning of the girls number, and not dancing. And, not only that, I span off the wrong side, forcing myself to walk behind the backdrops to get to the other side, where my clothes were.

For our closer, all of our guys have dummy microphones on mic stands to dance with. Well, my dance partner knocked mine onto the ground, so I had to figure out a way to get it back up, which just made everything a ton better.

We finally got off stage, changed, and got into the auditorium. I'd had about all I could handle for the day, and then..the awards ceremony.

"Our 2nd Solo Competition Finalist of the day...from South Jones High School, Cody McDonald!!"

....Wait, wait, wait, wait....what??? That can't be right...I was completely shocked.

And then, to top that off, we were announced as Grand Champions of our division, and I later found out that we held all the caption awards for the preliminary rounds. Things were finally looking up...sorta.

Went to the stage and drew my number.....1. Grand. Well, luckily, that was going to put me right before my group performed in finals, so I talked with the solo finalist from Columbus High School (I think her name was Tracy), and she agreed to swap with me and let me go 3rd...yessss. Last. The place I wanted to go in.

So, I went and changed clothes, and LeeAnne and I went to the cafeteria. The lines were so long, that we didn't have time to get food before we had to go back to our room to listen to judges' comments for finals, and then go to warm-up. So, we sat at a booth with my parents for a minute, and then got the idea to ask the people from Albertville at the front of the line to let us in so we could eat before finals (thanks guys! ). Well, while trying to get out of the booth, my foot got caught in the crossbars holding the booth up, and I twisted my ankle. Well, there's some more good news. Anyway, I just walked it off, and got into line with the Albertville people.

As soon as I did that, a parent of ours came up to us and told us we had to go back to the room, because it was time to read judges' comments. OK....so no food. I'll just starve to death, and pass out because I didn't get to eat. No biggie.

Well, my loving mother stood in line for me, and met up with me on the way to the warm-up room and slipped me a hamburger. I got to eat about half of it before I got caught. lol

I did great in finals, except for one thing: the girls number...again. This time, I tripped on the first riser while i was walking up it, and almost fell flat on my face. Luckily, I caught myself.

As soon as we were done, I took off to our homeroom to change back to my dress clothes again, to sing for solo competition finals. Well, by the time I got changed and to the warm-up room, there was an "anonymous choir" in there, and they wouldn't let me warm up for even 2 seconds. OK, fine. Whatever. I'm just happy I made finals, I don't care if I stink it up. Atleast I made the top 3.

So, I perform in the solo competition finals, and feel like I did ok...but I didn't have a clue about the other 2 singers. When I went to the sound booth to get my c.d., the sound guy said someone from my group had already gotten it for me, so I had to figure out who the heck that was, since it wasn't LeeAnne.

Well, I found my c.d., watched Albertville, Long Beach, and Picayune, and then the awards ceremony for finals came.

"The Grand Champion High School Solo Competition winner is....from South Jones High School, Cody McDonald!"

......

Oh geez, what the heck. This just doesn't fit my day. This CAN'T be right. No way. Pure astonishment right there, baby. I'm very grateful, but I surely didn't expect that.

Well, to finally wrap up the story, I can't decide whether to be happy or sad.

I won the solo competition for the first time in my life, which makes me really happy..but my group managed to go from being Grand Champion in prelims and having all the caption awards, to 2nd place with no awards...

I wish I could ask for a trade-out, I'd gladly take a Grand Championship for the group instead of one for me, any day...

Bleh..I'm never happy with my in show performance. I never can catch my breath for long enough to sound decent; I dance like a crazy man for 2 straight songs, and then try to sing a solo, which doesn't really work all that well.

Congratulations to Albertville!

I hated your ballad though..it was terrible. The song selection was absolutely a pitiful one for a ballad, if you ask me..
