McGavock is a public school in the nashville area. They have a FANTASTIC music program. Their marching band and concert bands have been reguarded as one of the if not the best in tennessee (esp. their marching band). I have had the pleasure of observing their band directors in the class room setting and talked to one of their choir directors while i was visiting. I had not heard of their choir program before though. Good show choirs and marching bands seem to go hand in hand... esp in alabama. Albertville, Homewood, Enterprise, Opelika, Auburn, several others all have great programs in both fields.

I don't recall all of their songs, but I do remember they did Bohemien Rhapsody for their closer and they had this bright silvery crown that stood front and center on the stage. They also did a bicycle medley where they all had bicycle handlebars which they used in their choreography. At the end of the medley, a rode a bicycle across the satge and all the guys followed her off. Their show was pretty unique, and I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Their homeroom was right beside ours, and it was cool getting to meet some of them.

not too cause anything but I was reading and saw that "Capital Sounds" was considered original...
Seriously? It's not at all creative nor original to pick one artist and have every song in your show be by that artist... I mean.. It's almost like a show choir doing a show with every song being nursery rhymes and say the theme is nursury rhymes...

Everyone has an opinion, but very few Southern SCCers have any tolerance for others and their thoughts.

I'm not gonna lie to you, I think scfan has one very good point: this site is turning into little more than a bunch of "Great Job Everyone!" 's, and people having zero tolerance for criticism of any type (even construction criticism seems to get shot down these days).

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's definitely important for us to encourage each other, and for us all to have the common understanding that we all work hard, and we all are far from perfect (yes, even Clinton is not perfect..sorry, for all you die-hard cynics). But, with that said, there's so much more to it all than just being nice, complimenting everyone, whether you mean it or not.

It simply takes mature people to carry on an intelligent, meaningful conversation on a forum; that's what I believe these forums are really for.

There are so many aspects of high school show choir (performances, placements, politics, and controversy, just to name a few) to discuss, that we absolutely cannot ignore them!

Oh..and it's only fair that everyone ease off of scfan. He has as much of a right to his opinion (and the right to voice it) as anyone else. I guarantee you, if you don't treat him rudely about what he has to say, he probably will be just as considerate when you voice something that he doesn't agree with, as is the case with most everyone on this great site.

So, let's go discuss!

Thats what I thought just wanted somebody to verify that fact. I knew nobody got score sheets so thats what I thought. Leaves a lot of room for wondering just what the judges thought? I thought I heard that in the prelims that vocals counted 60% of the score sheet, looks like vocals counts less in the finals if thats true? Oh well the way this is set up you can do what you want without justifing why you did it. If Belmont stays with that format then they will be the loser in the long run, once again just my opinion.

finals at belmont are not judged on a numerical basis i.e. 85, 80, 90, or something like that... The judges rank the 5 finalist 1-5 and then say who sang the best and who danced the best. Therefore it makes the finals results very close, no matter who wins the captions. For example, in 05 Albertville recieved more 1st place votes than any other choir but got 2nd. That means that there isn't as much weight on vocals or choreo in finals. I feel that the judges looked for who had the best ballance of singing and dancing. Some groups were able to ballance that better than others. As i said before, I felt like Aville, south, and tupelo all had vocals that were about equal. Albertville had the best sound and blend. Tupelo sang really well, but their vocals were crazzy easy. South was great but not really my style. (then again i'm not a judge, but i have been at a music conservatory for 2 years).

Just thought i might shed some light on how things are "scored" at belmont in FINALS. prelims are judged like most comps with the numerical score.

Look my original post covered a number of issues that involved several groups. Yes I as well as a number of other people were disappointed with how the finals at Belmont turned out, as well as a number of ohter things that went down. It was not just about West Jones, I pointed out that Tupelo as well as WJ were delayed from unloading their props and equipment for the finals, and that Albertville had to make the decision to go without their backdrops due to a lack of space and unwillingness on Belmonts part to open the back curtain or move the risers forward. My post was about a number of issues that affected several groups. Some of you people need to grow up, I have never said Capitol Sound was the worst group I have ever seen or that they sang horribly or anything like that. The main thing I said was their choreo was not as good as any of the other groups in the finals or even some of the girls groups that didn't make the finals. I know nothing about Capitol Sound as they choose not to turn in any info to be put in the comps program. For all I know they may be a first year program and did super great for the amount of time they have been in show choir. My post was not meant as a slap at Capitol Sound, but rather at the judges who delivered the end result at Belmont, and it involved more than just West Jones. Maybe some of you who are so knowledgeable about how scoring works can explain to me how the group who won the Vocal award finished behind two other groups? I was under the impression that vocals count for a larger amount on the score sheet at Belmont than Choreo?

Cut scfan2 some slack. After all, his son is the director at West Jones, and he is probably just trying to justify their placing.

please read above...none of the stuff i have said is to offend it is just food for thought...i personally am just tired of everyone thinking that their show choir is "perfect" and they can pass judgement on other groups...and even if you are not in show choir, i still think you should have the courtesy to keep the negative to yourself...it is not fair for people to come in here and be bias and trash talk other groups..P.S. IF YOU HAVE NOT TRASH TALKED ANY GROUPS I AM NOT TALKING TO YOU SO PLEASE DONT QUOTE WHAT ALL YOU HAVE SAID AND BOLD IT OUT AND SAY.."EXPLAIN TO ME HOW I HAVE TRASH TALKED A GROUP"...I MUST NOT BE TALKING TO YOU...thank you!

Maybe what we say we really mean. I think i speak for a lot of us in the south when i say, there are somethings we don't like what other groups do, but like our parents said "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it at all" maybe we just don't post what negative comments we have to say because we think about how it might cause other groups to feel down on themselves. So in my conclusion, it is not that we sugar coat everything...we just keep the negative out because this forum is to make friends and have FUN talking about show choir not yell at people. Thank you!

I posted what I did because I know that most of the posts on here are from students and their directors would not want them posting anything that might be taken as negative, so most of the time on here all you get is man everybody did great and everbody costumes looked good, and boy your show was terrific. I thought that their might be some who wanted to know some of what went on from somebody who wasn't afraid to post what they saw and had the liberty to post it.
