well. aren't you special. she tried to show that she appreciated what she thought was a kind act, but you can't accept her approciation.

Being from Jackson, I should be offended. But I'm really not. Its great you took the time to find all that out. But its a great song. Our whole choir fell in love with it. And when Jarad came with the choreo it just fit. Its a little rude, but thanks for letting us know other groups have done it (and that wasn't sarcastic). Its a great show song and I'm glad other groups know that too!

A long time ago, an old show choir sage told me something. Opinions are like ___holes. Everyone has one, but nobody wants to see anyone elses.

MusicMan i do believe you have misinterpretted the statement "the same songs with the exact same choreography". I would imagine that although those other groups have performed the songs before us, our choreography isn't the same. Also, she said the songs had been performed "over and over again for at least the last 10 years". This is the first time for Encore to perform these songs. Yes, Long Beach did A New World, but it isn't the same choreography. Also, you almost forgot the other two songs in our show. As far as Africa goes, has another group started of with a drum solo and guys break dancing? I'm pretty sure we (Encore guys) came up with the idea to get our choreographer to teach us that part. It was originally going to be cut out. I am really tired of all the negativity on these discussions. Please! Lets focus on the positive.

A long time ago, an old show choir sage told me something. Opinions are like ___holes. Everyone has one, but nobody wants to see anyone elses.

With this in mind I will say.... I feel that everyone on the scc forums has gotten too touchy and sensitive. I know it's upsetting to hear that you lost and that other people thought the show you worked on for 60 hours a week sucks.... but thats life. If I were to say that a group had a bad vocal sound and that I felt their choreo was lacking energy, I would be stoned to death by the fingers of fellow posters. Why should I feel afraid to say what I feel.

I understand that there is a good way and a bad way to say things. Saying, "Group A's vocals sucked" is probably not in the good category. And I would not like to hear that. But if someone stated that "Group A's vocals lacked dynamic contrast, intonation through out the show, inner voices dominated the melody lines, and that the vocal sound was too harsh and nasally," I would be able to say, "Ok, maybe I do have bad vocals".... that simple. I am a college music student who is almost finished with a music ed. degree. I've had lessons and performance reviews that made me want to curl into a little ball and cry. Did I get mad and say, "no bashing!!!" No.

This comment is not about anyone or any individual post. Just to hopefully bring up an ideal that a negative comment about a group is not bashing or even a bad thing if stated correctly. That being said, Way to go everyone for being the best groups you could possibly be. Because thats all that matters. 2 Years from now nobody will remember who beat who. Instead we will remember the thrill of the performance, the fun had on bus rides, and the character built from rehearsing and competition. But most importantly you will have the gift of music in your life.

Well SC FAN I think you have it right on the money!!!

It is hard to sit there and watch groups that have done the same songs with the exact same choreography over and over again for at least the last 10 years. AND that they think they should be rewarded for doing this.

We can go on You tube and see "Ride Like the Wind" by several groups using the same choreo...and Hernando's Hideway...when Opelika did it with Therea Rine in 2005. Same choreo, same song.....

AND ANOTHER THING.....how many colors can that sequined dress come in with the hanging tassels and beads????

I would refuse to pay any choreographer for already used stuff...PERIOD!!!!

And you ARE SO RIGHT!!! It is much harder to sing when actually dancing...instead of doing drill team armography like some groups like to do.

I would MUCH RATHER see a group with original material, a personality, and moves that are entertaining that keep the audience entertained instead of a well-oiled machine. HOW BORING!!!!

As a director, I have to say that I have meant every word that I have ever posted on this forum.

I still mean what I say, I would NEVER do canned material that choreographers sell over and over again. It is up to the director to design his/her own show and not accept leftovers!

But I am sure that you might not understand all of this yet since you are a student.

I believe that there is much disrespect in your words above and I can tell you that you do not represent your choir very well.

Among all of my show choir director friends is alot of respect and collaboration. AND we all encourage and respect each other and each other's work. We go to SCA together and regularly judge each other's auditions and talk.

So.....maybe you should just not start something on here. We do not need animosity....only encouragement. There is nothing wrong with stating that I WILL NOT do canned choreo or music!

Now, please note that I have NO issue with re - using show music. I feel that songs lend themselves to many different sorts of interpretations, and have a completely different effect overall for a show depending on concept. But I am simply confused. Again I have no issue with re - using music, nor do I intend to disrespect anyone. I’m not a student, and I haven’t been for a while, but with all of this sharp criticism about “canned” choreo or music” I simply question a few statements above regarding show concept and show material. Take a look below. If canned music and choreo are a definite “NO” why are these so apparent in certain 2008 shows. I love all of these songs. and I think that they work well, and I without question use them. But according to above, I guess we could call these “Canned” or "leftovers". Which is rather interesting if we view the show design and concept of a certain group.

Absolutely Everybody

Opelika “Impressions” 2007
Marysville “Swingers Unlimited” 2005

All I can say is wow. The only group I got to see was Pascagoula and they were really good, but it's a suprise to me they won it all. I'm still trying to figure out what this says about some of the larger groups with Pascagoula winning Vocals and Choreo. I know some on here will take this the wrong way but there is no way a small group should be able to out sing larger groups with everything being equal, 30 can't make as much volume as say 44, it just isn't possible. I guess it just shocks me that Pascogula could out sing larger groups like Homewood and Albertville.

im not being mean or anything...but just because they got best vocals doesnt necessarily mean they outsang the bigger groups. i mean they could have been louder but vocals is determined by style, articulation, diction, vowels so on and so forth. "impact" could have just had better dynamics than the others. im just saying not being rude or anything at all.

I am sorry to you as well, for having read that...please know that i usually do not act like that and i know it does not show but i have been raised better...i am terribly sorry. I wish you and your choir the best of luck the rest of this season...

You are right, once again...i am only human and i appologize for letting my childish anger get the best of me, as a young college student, i should know better. I wish you and your choir the best of luck the rest of this competition season.

I agree with you, what I said did not represent my school or high school choir well at all. They deserve a better name then what I just tried to make for them, and i apologize. I should have more respect for you not only because you are an Adult but because you have done nothing worth me blowing up over. I simply over analyzed your words and over reacted. That is my fault and my mistake...

On to another subject, who was blown away by the outstanding performance of "And I Am Telling You" by the girl in Jones Onstage and the amazing overall performance by the entire group! What other shows do they do and when are they?
