Compare where Opelika is now to where they were at this time two years ago. I think the difference speaks for itself. You can't just build a program like that over night; they are, however, on their way.

I really agree with you. Looking at Opelika you can really tell that they're a very talented group. They sing well, the dance well and thier show was rather cohesive. I think they'll really be someone to look at in a few years.

In years past, the A and AA Division winners had automatic bids to finals at Homewood.

Starting this season (including at last weekend's competition), the top 5 scores from the entire day were admitted to finals; no automatic bids from A or AA Division.

Oops! My bad! Ya know, I was just kiddin' earlier.

^^^^ It was changed to top 5 overall, and either way it happened to where the #1 group in A and AA got in anyway, and then the rest were the top 3 scores.

I dont know if this is true or not, but i heard from someone that Homewood changed the way they choose finals. Is it still First in Div A/AA and then the next top 3, or do they just take the top 5 scores of the day?

I'm pretty sure that the A division winner automatically got a spot in finals.

I just have a quick question...what school are the Counterpoints from? I've heard of them, but my brain just seemed to have had a stupid moment right now...and I just can't remember...thanks!

i think this is phrased perfectally. they arent as good as before, but they are still good ENOUGH. I don't see anybody beating them this year, unless Mt. Zion, JBHS, or Counterpoints step it up a lot!!! (which i'm sure they probably are)

I think you are spot on, and I think Darren Dale is the man to bring them back to the promise land. Thanks for the support!

I watched Clinton on YouTube (which I know isn't the best place to judge a group... particularly vocally), and it felt like they were a little down this year to me too. However, they are still very technically sound, and on a score card they are going to be really tough to beat. I also saw a little of Mt. Zion's show from one of their earlier performances, and they seem a little down from past years, too. It will still be an interesting comp... that's for sure!

I think Clinton's sound is weaker this year. It's hard to come off a great year like they had last year and be as strong. Even the people in Attache will admit that this is one of their weaker years. However, no matter how much weaker they are, unless some other school steps it up, their streak will continue.

I'm not sure I appreciate your tone there, but I'll say this... there is a BIGGG difference between a competition performance and an exhibition performance that is done after a busy day hosting a competition. It is not unusual for a group to look a little tired and flat during a performance after a 15-hour day of putting on a competition. Keep that in mind, and I wouldn't judge any group based on an exhibition performance.

Also the guy that posted the scores above is the director at Opelika, so I would say that it's safe to go by the numbers that he posted.

Okay first of all never did I say that Opelika "Ovations" was a bad group... If you'll read in the Opelika thread, I posted that I thought they did a nice job at their competition... Personally I thought that the vocals were not that good and some of the soloists were shaky, but all in all they did a nice job after a long day's work... I did not think that they were as good some of the other groups that barely missed finals, such as Auburn or Atlee... Obviously they improved much to get within a point of probably the best A Division group ever in Pascagoula...

And by the way Trey, don't get a tone with me either... All I said was that they must have done a really good job at Homewood, because I didn't think that they were that great at their own competition... And from all of the parents and alumni from West Jones that I talked to that saw them, they obviously did... It would be different if I said "Opelika sucked and there's no way they should have gotten 6th place"... But I didn't... If you'll also notice, I congratulated them on almost making Finals... Even though we weren't on our game Saturday (which is no excuse), they still beat us and that's all that matters... I respect that you were defending your former group, but drop it... The results are in, what's done is done... No more rude comments from either of us...

Well seeing as I never said we were better than them, because those words never came out of my mouth, I dont think that comment was needed at all. We are not better than them. I'm sorry you felt the need to attack me. Just my opinion.

Well I got a fourth of it right... South Jones did only beat us by 8, but according to this spread, Clinton beat us by 26 and not 11, meaning that there was much more than a 3 point difference between them and SJ, and apparently Opelika beat us... I was just going by hearsay from a friend that supposedly our director said we got 6th and only lost to Clinton by 11... I haven't seen the score sheets, because Mr. Mizell has been out with the flu, and he has them... So I'll just go by what the person from Opelika said... So congrats to them... Obviously you guys were much better than at your own competition..

It looks like my Otown "Ovations" were on the bubble and just missed the Finals. Did anybody get a chance to see them? Can you guys give me a set list and your impressions of their show?

I saw the Ovations at Homewood. Their show was pretty tight, but I must say some of their competition was a little tighter. I do think they have made quite an improvement since I saw their exhibition at Southern Showcase. I still agree with everyone who made finals. You say they just missed making it into finals. I can definately see that. If there was a sixth finalist spot (like there once was) they would definately be my pick for it.
