Members of Westside's "ATSC" celebrate their second Grand Champion win of the season at Pleasant Hill this Saturday.

LOS ANGELES, California It's only the third week of the year, but already the gloves are coming off. Intense battles across the midwest are laying ground for early standouts as show choir continues to evolve and blossom, attracting more fans along the way.
Waconia Power Company erupt in jubilation over their sweep at Bloomington Kennedy.
The weekend saw no fewer than thirteen different contests take place, with some of the biggest names in show choir unveiling their sets for the first time this season.
Fresh off their amazing undefeated season in 2012, Wheaton-Warrenville South clinched a dominating win at Mt. Zion's annual event, besting some notable challengers including Buffalo Grove, Twinsburg, and Hastings. Grabbing best vocals and best choreography in addition to the Grand Champion trophy, it's clear that they haven't lost any of their previous momentum. And with two FAME Championships under their belt, they're out to prove themselves nationally once again when they square off against both John Burroughs and Burbank High School at the same time at a competition in California this March. There is no doubt: they have become a force to be reckoned with.
Another group coming off an undefeated season is Solon High School's "Music in Motion;" one of the true great success stories of 2012. Any cynical thoughts that last year's triumphs were merely a fluke were handily put to rest this weekend as they swept the Beavercreek competition, beating out other fantastic groups from Marysville and Loveland. They took home best band and best costume honors in addition to best vocals and best choreography, and are definitely a group to watch this year.
Over at Pleasant Hill, the most exciting news (next to a disruptive fire alarm) was Westside's win; now their second Grand Championship victory of the season. It's early yet, but there's no question they have a winning spirit that may just take them far this year. In previous seasons, they finished strongly but fumbled a bit out the gate. It seems they have managed to address whatever was in their way at the outset and if they can keep it up, they'll be one of the shining highlights of the year.
In Iowa, at least four different show choir events also took place, including Johnston's annual "Showzam." Urbandale "Studio 2013" corrected course from the previous week and took the top honors, blocking big contenders like Ankeny's "Visual Adrenaline" and Jefferson's "Westside Delegation" from the win. Urby also claimed best vocals and best band awards.
With the number of events across the country beginning to grow and groups preparing ever earlier for each season, one thing is clear: you have to be ready to bring it the first time you step on the stage. We salute everyone who participated this weekend, because no matter the size of your group or what kind of show you put on, it takes a lot of work. Fortunately for all of us, the party is just getting started.
