LOS ANGELES, California — It's been an exciting year for show choir, of that there is no doubt. Extravagant, themed shows are on the rise, the competitive stakes are higher than they've ever been, and the activity we all love is spreading to new places across the world for the very first time. Show choir feels healthy and alive.

As I stood on stage last night at the SoCal Invitational, I remarked that it's incredible how far show choir has come in the last decade - and we owe a lot of that to the directors and choreographers who have been willing to push the envelope, take risks, and continually redefine our medium to take it to new heights. At that same event we saw entirely new styles of music injected into sets like Burbank's groundbreaking use of dubstep, as well as phenomenal technological advancements like Burroughs' jaw-droppingly magical color-changing dresses which brought their ghostly women "back to life." These are things you aren't even seeing in Broadway shows. It wasn't that long ago that we were step touching in sequined vests, so it's rather exciting not only to see how far we've come but to imagine where we are headed.

In the midwest another battle of the titans took place at FAME's second annual show choir national championship, where it was Wheaton-Warrenville who reigned supreme for the second year in a row. They, too, have embraced the power of story with their innovative take on the Wizard of Oz, and have firmly cemented themselves as one of the best our country has to offer.

As this season now comes to a close, I just want to make a personal thank you to everyone who has supported this year and helped to make our community so great. It is still an entirely "garage" operation, but the people who contribute and provide insight into our community are what make it worthwhile. This November marks our 10th year in existence as a website covering show choir on a national level, and in celebration of that there are some major changes coming that I believe will redefine the power of what SCC is able to offer. Until then, have an amazing summer and don't stop dreaming big. Show choir in 2012 was a true symbol of everything that is right with our youth and the value of arts in education today.
